When most people-or manufacturers, for that matter-think of EDC, they think of concealed carry in an urban setting. The Idahoan describes the unique challenges of rural EDC. #ruralEDC

Someone already mentioned it but I’ll add to it. The GLOCK 40 in 10mm I too live in Idaho and know how quick it is to get from town to the middle of nowhere. The G40 is the best answer. Add a decent holster red dot(trijicon) light(surefirex300) Extra magazines Quality ammo You’ve got range and the ability to stop a bear. 2k total for a complete G40 setup and extras vs competitive options like mcx and etc. 3k+ at minimum
@21Taylor29 ай бұрын
1 being lowest 10 being best outcome Price 9/10 especially on a budget cheaper than a 2k based AR pistol or sbr that’ll need another 3k at least in optics, accessories and components. Conceal ability 6/10 perfect for outskirts of town and mountains. Still doable in Walmart. Especially in winter. Range 8/10 with the right ammo and trigger time could hit at 200 yds and definitely nail ground squirrels at 40 yds. Reliability 9/10 it’s a Glock but it’s 10mm

I'd suggest the 300 Blackout or 350 Legend or the new 400 Legend in a AR Pistol with the folding buffer as said above in a 7.5-10.5 inch upper a really good trigger and a Primary Arms 3x or 5x Micro Prism...
@austinhuber31318 ай бұрын
I carry an ar carbine in my truck with a 10.5 inch barrel, a shortened buffer tube that I cheek weld, and a see all open sight optic. Norwegian polar bear hunters use ARs in 556, so I think you'll be good on power. Still, it's not quite very compact, mine is my truck gun. It seems like you could do with a PDW, perhaps a pistol with a compact chassis that will allow you to shoulder it for longer range shots.

An 11.5 MCX with a 1-6x LPVO would probably fit your description pretty well. It gets you the accuracy you need, along with being a rifle caliber weapon. It’s handy, especially with the stock folded, it still weighs less than a comparably set up 16” AR-15 even if it’s a heavier system. The two disadvantages are cost and the fact that you will have to file a tax stamp, although getting an upper and putting it on an AR lower will reduce the cost dramatically. In theory you can make it into a bullpup cheek pistol, which might be interesting Edit: Also, there’s the rattler LT coming out in 7.62x39 with a 7.75” barrel. That would be amazing for your purposes but it isn’t out yet

@woodrowbrimm280510 ай бұрын
Have you thought of Rebarreling your AR Pistol to 6.8 mm. or a .300 Blackout with Super Sonic Loads. You could buy a different Upper in the new caliber and still use the same Magazines. You might have to use a different Buffer but it would be cheaper than buying a whole new gun and more power than the 5.56 Nato round. .300 Blackout Brass can be made from 5.56 just don't use the El Cheapo stuff. Federal or LC Milt. Brass works for me and I can use the .30 Cal. Cast Bullets I make for my .30-06 and the H110 /W296 powder I use for .357 Mag. or .44 Mag.
@onpsxmember9 ай бұрын
That sounds more like a logistical issue rather than edc overall and you make it harder with having it all with one firearm. If you're on your land something like a quad, a dirt bike, a bicycle...all of them can hold something that ticks the boxes but you wouldn't carry all day and with more barrel length you have more energy at distance. See if that is feasible and gives you more choices. For your own safety, keep the .44 Magnum. You could also add a stock and optic to it.
@sinisterthoughts28969 ай бұрын
a stock would be a tax stamp and a long wait, and make it much less handy.

Have you considered a 350 Legend cheek pistol with an LPVO? 350 Legend is the largest bore bullet that will fit in a 223 case. 20 round mags are available or you can modify 30 rounders. I have not yet looked into how accurate or powerful it is in a pistol but my intuition says it is worth investigation. I believe it will replace the 300 Blackout when subsonic ammo becomes available. (Not really important for your use case.)
@sinisterthoughts28969 ай бұрын
I don't know, in subsonic configuration I like the Idea but 300 has way better BC which is direly important when subsonic and trying to shoot very far at all.

It won't meet all of your requirements, but may be a place to start. Take a look at an ENDO Tactical Glock pistol brace(SBR) or something similar with a red dot on the pistol. Three points of contact and about 2.5 LBS in a relatively small package with good capacity. Think of a Glock in .40 S&W, 10mm or even 357 Sig . Good Luck.

Tim, you should look up the Katana-American PDW concept. It is a 10mm, suppressor capable, select fire, MAC-10. Something similar might suit your fancy as the 10mm is essentially a rimless .41 Magnum.

You aren't alone. I do a fair amount of practice at 25 yards and can usually keep everything inside a pie plate or less. Very little of my forest property gives shots much more than that anyway. Moving on, I think wanting 1,000 foot pounds energy in an easy to carry all day pistol is a little like wanting to find unicorn eggs. Even my Wildey won't give you that. And I durn sure won't recommend the Wildey as an everyday carry pistol. I have a Ruger 5 shot DA .44 Special, but like the Wildey I think it is too heavy for everyday wear. I find a Charter Arms .44 Bulldog is a lot easier to lug around 16 hours a day. For similar reasons although there is a steel CZ75 variant here, I find a P80 (Glock 19 clone) to be a lot more practical for all day wear. Yes there is a 4" S&W M-25-5 if I want big holes, but a Colt SAA (or a Uberti clone of) is a lot easier for all day wear. I concur on a bear encounter, but I suspect 4 or 5 fmj and jhps in quick succession from a 9mm should make it think twice . For reasons of weight I lean towards the CA ,44 or a .45 Peacemaker (artillery). Likewise I am pretty sure a few hard cast SWCs from a big bore revolver could ruin a bear's day. I find all my 1911 variants are a lot like the CZ in being needlessly heavy for carry afield while doing chores. I totally agree that AKs, ARs, Sharps and MH carbines, or even lever action carbines are not really the thing to wear/carry while out maintaining fence line or digging up a broken water line, carrying firewood, etc.

A .50AE desert eagle would be nice. He said he needs accuracy at distance (100 yards), compactness & power. A 10mm Glock 20 might work, guys in Alaska use those. I think when he ventures out he should have a very short 30 caliber rifle & a powerful pistol. Charles Bronson would choose the Wildey in 475.
@kenibnanak55549 ай бұрын
@@flintstriker2791 LoLL I wonder if you have ever strapped on a Desert Eagle and tried wearing it for 10 hours of digging fence posts or cutting dead trees to get firewood.. If you check my own videos you will see I actually own a Wildey. No way would I recommend that for daily carry. Likewise I would not recommend an Automag (which back in the 80s I did own one of). Fantasy movies are nice, but if you notice C. Bronson wasn't doing much in the way of manual labor while carrying his Automag (for an hour or two at a time). I own a Thompson Contender also, and yes with a scope on it, I can reach out and touch at 100 yds with a rifle cartridge, but again because of the sheer clunkiness of the gun and it's holster, no way would I want to lug that around on a day of doing farm / ranch work. The reality is unless you are willing to lay the gun on the ground while you do work, even if it is just stretching fence wire, or nailing boards, a rifle / carbine is kind of not practical. Strapping on a rifle while also wearing a pistol for a day of working with a chain saw, or building a stone wall is kind of ludicrous. I will stand by my own solution which is a 5 shot .44 revolver or an old time 5.5 inch barrel Peacemaker (or Ruger Vawuero). Not a .454 Casull type though as no one makes one light enough to not make you super sweaty after only a few hours of lugging it around while doing ranch work.
@flintstriker27919 ай бұрын
I've held a DE .50 before & would want to shoot it but not want to carry it. I do part time ranch hand / manual labor work & usually carry a Glock 23 .40, or a Glock 21 .45, sometimes a cocked & locked 1911A1 .45 either Kimber or Springfield or Colt. .44 mag revolvers are awesome also but a bit heavy & limited capacity. I want a Glock 20 10mm, fairly light & with capacity/powerful with hot loads. I hand dug 8 4' deep x 2 'wide pylon holes for solar panel frame posts with my Glock 21 in a LAG kydex holster with 2 extra mags on my belt. I had my Springfield Socom 16 .308 mounted in the side by side also. Sounds like you're a hard working gun guy, good luck and god bless sir. @@kenibnanak5554

A folding stock/buffer adapter for the AR15 and a 5 inch barreled upper chambered in something like 300 blackout so you can take advantage of the improved performance from the short barrel (vs. 556/223) would be able to bring the size of your AR down significantly. You would probably need a 7-8 inch barrel instead to get the 1000 ft-lbs energy requirement however, but may be pushing the length requirement a bit too far. Be aware 300 blackout has a diverse selection of loads for subsonic and supersonic and will be loaded with different bullet weights that would effect the performance of the cartridge. The different loads would also impact accuracy, as barrels with different twist rates will be more or less accurate depending on your choice of load.
@sinisterthoughts28969 ай бұрын
as others have stated maybe look at 300 blackout in a supersonic configuration. it can get fairly spicy, the brass isn't cheap, but reloading takes away most of that problem.
@flintstriker27919 ай бұрын
What about a CMMG MK47 Mutant in 7.62x39, it would meet your power & accuracy & capacity needs. Old school ranchers used 30-30 lever guns but they don't have high capacity. A Springfield Armory Socom 16 in .308 would work, might be too long though. If you wanted to go really compact, a 10mm Glock 20 with a brace & longer after market barrel would be good but might be a little underpowered. Truly a gun Enigma, sounds like fun.🤪😃

First thing first, I like your videos. My firearm suggestion may not tick all the boxes for the defense gun you are looking for. I am very pleased with the Mossberg 500, 3-in-1 combo 12 guage shotgun I bought many years ago. The 28 inch and the 18.5 inch barrels are easy and quick to change. I have used the pistol grip. Now I have the shotgun set up with the short barrel, the regular stock, and the rod removed for greater capacity. A sling that holds 10 shells would be a nice addition. Sportsmen Warehouse sells the Mossberg 500 combo for $419.
@sinisterthoughts28969 ай бұрын
you're not wrong, concessions are likely to be made, but that would drastically impede the accuracy and range side of his dilemma, and he'd be able to meet the other criteria with his .44 already.

The Model 69 Smith and Wesson is a great choice. A little smaller than what you carry, same caliber, and as a newer production Smith, the tolerances are less variable that older Smiths, not that I have actually found a Smith outside of 45 Colt caliber, that needed attention paid to throat and individual chambers specifications. The 8 shot 357 Magnum N-Frame is a nice EDC too. Not my favorite choice for bear, but that wolf pack would be an easy problem to solve with one of those. My favorite though is the 625 Model of 1988. I have done effective work with it, in competition, on steel critters at over 75 yards, and it reloads fast with moon clips. I shoot loads in it that are at 45 Super power levels. A T/C Contender in many different calibers is also often useful, I had a 10 inch 223 for a while that was really accurate, but a 16 inch barrel was even better, I can switch the pistol grip for a stock in a minute. T/C barrel quality is - shall we say, highly variable. My favorite T/C though is a Super 16 45-70. Not ideal for multiple assailants, but pretty effective on one. A real good choice for bear, and really handy if it happens to be elk season. I feel fine ignoring semi-automatics in my Rural EDC situation. At least until I actually get a rifle out of the truck.

agreed, you kind of need two different kinds of gun, hence your current load-out and dilemma. given some of your minimum requirements you pretty much have landed in the world of rifles. maybe an AR10 or that new Ruger AR15 sized .308, maybe an AR in 6.5 Creedmoor, maybe an under-folder AK? size is always an issue, it's beyond frustrating to get any real work done with a rifle slung, so especially with the AR maybe a pistol format like you already have, again in a beefier caliber. I've been in the same boat, luckily where I do ranch work coyotes are the biggest predator, so an AR is plenty fine, but I have property in the hills where there is a remote chance of black bear or cougar, so I understand both sides of your conundrum, just not at the same time. I'll drop another post if I can think of anything useful. hopefully it'll work out, as well as the economic straights we've been in. take care of yourself.

I have a small wooded farm property and have similar issues. I break it down into two kinds of days. A work day with a pistol, and a for fun day with a rifle. We have occasional bears, but I still feel pretty comfortable in my woods with a 50-70 Sharps carbine or a Martini Henry .577-450 carbine.

While taking a shower, I went though a large amount of options. You are right. There are not a ton of great options for you currently on the market. Also as an engineer, I often like to think of new solutions, but I could not think of one as of yet. The best I could come up with that meets most of your needs would be a stocked (or braced) 10mm semi-auto. With a good optic, it should just barely met your accuracy requirements. 10mm just meets your power requirements. Those you can get semi-autos in more powerful cartages, most are not really viable for this application. It defiantly meets your size requirements. So just barely meets requirements...so what do we need to comfortable meet them? Lets see. We need a little more power, and a bit more accuracy. Hum...I need to mull over this issue and see if something comes to me.

He obviously needs a 30 caliber rifle of some sort, either braced or bullpup .308 or 300BO or 7.62x39. A 10mm long barreled, braced Glock 20 might barely work. @@flintstriker2791 Well he said an AR pistol is too large, so I do not think any bullpup on the market will work. Defiantly has the power, range, and accuracy, but not the size and weight. Like he said, I do not think there is anything on the market that is a perfect fit.
