Watch The Equalizer 2 Now: AAN.SonyPictures.com/TheEquali...
McCall (Denzel Washington) has put his mysterious past behind him and is dedicated to living a new, quiet life. But when he meets Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters, he can’t stand idly by. Armed with hidden skills that allow him to serve vengeance against anyone who would brutalize the helpless, McCall comes out of his self-imposed retirement and finds his desire for justice reawakened. If someone has a problem, if the odds are stacked against them, if they have nowhere else to turn, McCall will help. He is The Equalizer.

So many small things adding up to something incredible in this scene. Two things that stood out to me outside of the badass fight choreography and overall drama was McCall timing himself (realizing he had slowed down just slightly with age) and at the end when he said "I'm sorry." He was apologizing to his dead spouse, who he had promised that he would leave this kind of work behind. Small things that inform about a character add up to a stellar performance.

What I love about this scene: The room becomes a chessboard, and we're shown all the pieces in play as McCall methodically notes each piece's position and available moves as he formulates his countermoves and end game - even as he is conflicted - while the tension is allowed to build. When he finally springs into action, there are no surprises -- just brilliant execution (pun intended).

I love the way the camera notes the skulls on the guy's shirt, and the skulls on his desk, to contrast their flamboyant "everybody look at what a dangerous MF I am! FEAR ME!" with Robert being completely plain, softspoken and understated because he knows he's the real deal, so he doesn't need to show off, and the fact that he's easy to underestimate just makes him even more dangerous.

@@wendyrosen3179 I agree with your last sentence, he seems a very admirable person. But I don't know if I agree with the idea that he's one of the best actors of the generation. I think people confuse his screen presence (which is powerful) with being a great actor. To me, he pretty much just plays Denzel Washington in every movie. That character is always strong, brave, capable etc, with a clear moral compass. I couldn't imagine him doing a comedy role for eg. Or a role like John Nash in A Beautiful Mind. The best actors to me are the ones who play a character so convincingly that you forget who the actor is. I can't imagine ever forgetting for one minute that it's Denzel on the screen.

The real telling point? Throughout the entire combat, his face didn't change. He didn't get angry, or cocky, or show any enjoyment. Those men were fighting for their lives showing a multitude of emotions, and he looked like he was changing a tire or plunging a toilet. Methodical, mechanical. He knew exactly what was going to happen before the fight even started. He was a PRO....and all they were was nothing more than a light workout.

Safe for one dumb premise, that the entire fight scene hinges on. And that would be him walking into the middle of the room, completely banking on the guy with the gun walking up towards him, like a dog with a stick .... instead of just remaining on his ass and shooting him in the back. Don't get me wrong, it is a cool scene. But as far as the methodical bit goes, it isn't. Unless we consider blatant plot armor a method.
@matasa7463

The most terrifying part isn't just how routine it was for him... but the timer. He estimated 16 seconds was all it would take to neutralize all threats, and he ended up with 19 seconds of combat, and was like "eh, I got a bit rusty, too slow." How used to fighting do you have to be to be able to do be able to estimate that? Special forces and SWAT are the only ones who would do those kinds of intense room clearing training, but even they can't just estimate their split time like that on the fly based only on the observed situation...

The crazy thing about *”The Equalizer/Mr. McCall”* is that we all know that one, VERY PARTICULAR middle aged black man who barely speaks, never bothers anybody or causes any problems, extremely educated, polite/respectful of others and most importantly compassionate with a side of “straight a** whooping” if the time ever calls for it. We need more Mr. Mccalls in this world!! 😢

it's a fun action movie and all that usual stuff, but it's the little things that separate one from the rest. for me, it's two moments in this scene. firstly, when the threats have been spoken and negotiations are at an end and robert quietly turns the face of death toward each man by rearranging the skulls on the desk. whoever thought of that is an artist. that's just some gangster shit. as a viewer you're like, oh damn. secondly, is when robert sits there and talks to him while he suffocates slowly about why he's dying and for what. that was like robert was actually taking on the role of death.

Have seen this part more than 50 times. Its a perfect scene. But for those characters who simply were unaware of the person standing infront of them I feel little time should have been given to them to understand what hit them & the regret of not taking the money he offered. As the build up was deeply engrossing, I wanted the end to be little bit longer for those bad guys. It would have been more satisfying.
