There's an element to Elves that might actually be in this universe. The concept of Elves remembering EVERYTHING. There's that troupe of Elven creatures in some fantasy series for elves to adapt to living almost forever their brain "evolved" to be able to remember literally EVERYTHING - every second of every moment. I guess that's why this show focus the flashbacks on Frierens perspective. That's probably also how Serei and Frieren can have a hobby collecting/reading all grimoires they encounter and remember all of the spells within them.

Mad House really did make the fight to the top tier, they made it so logical and strategic. When the fight began, both Frieren raised the staff to each other and the shield kept flickering because they didn't know where the opponent would hit. Both Frieren were going to use Zoltraak - a basic, high-speed spell - to finish the fight quickly just like she always does but when they saw the opponent can use defensive spell with the same react level, they knew the basic spell won't work so they changed to use large AOE spell so the defensive spell won't useful anymore

I think to elves, they probably afraid to realized or admitting something/people are important to them as they live so long and gonna memorizeing those things/ppl they have lost like forever, so they rather tend to telling themselves the time they spent with human is not a big deal to them. In manga the main arc about Daken that's a point that supper impressed me is sometimes we all just fear to memorizing all those happy and treasure moment with people we love when we lost them.

An Elf trains Human - (Serei and Flamme) A Human trains Elf - (Flamme to Frieren) An Elf trains Human - (Frieren to Fern) The cycle repeats. Here's a theory!! Fern will be the Catalyst of Elves coming out of their "hiding". 😇 Specifically Frieren and Fern relationship I know elves are not "hiding" but as of this moment they are not actively interacting with human civilization. Imagine Fern teaching those "useless" spells they collected to a city of humans - making their everyday lives a little more easier.

It's a bit sad that most American reactors do not detect the full extent of Serie's sadness in the flashback scene. They fail to catch the half-second pause when she heard that Flamme died, the fact that she dodged Frieren's question of whether she's sad, the walk where her memory of the little Flamme was all over the place, the time that she said Flamme's dream was disgusting/displeasing but with a smile, and those occasional signs of sadness in her eyes when she talked in the walk. Serie talked about Flamme's life achievements like a proud parent talking about their kid. She said she only trained Flamme on a whim but she remembered her favorite spell and her dream, everything about her. Just a side note: that sentence "but humans cannot afford to delay" in original Japanese was "but those children cannot afford to delay". Serie just didn't want to admit that Flamme's death hit her hard. She was upset with Flamme's will, like an estranged parent upset about her kid not having visited her during life at all but only left a bunch of unpaid debts for her to settle. But she missed Flamme anyway. That walk and that talk was Serie's way of dealing with the impact of Flamme's death. She didn't want to be alone so she invited Frieren even though they didn't share the same goals and didn't get along. That monologue was essentially her eulogy to Flamme, the funeral speech that reminisced the Flamme she knew while celebrating her achievements in life. And in a way, the final parts of the talk she was admitting that her little girl was right about her dream. Watch it again focusing on Serie's perspective and you will see much more than just her being a cold gatekeeper of magic. Serie may have torn up Flamme's will, but 1000 years later she was doing her disciple's wishes anyway.
@BOLDcast
@BOLDcast 5 ай бұрын
We did not miss this at all and actually discussed it in our video and compared Serie’s grief to how Frieren talked about Himmel and the others at the start of the show. I think it was quite obvious that Serie loved and cared for Flamme but because of her long lifespan chose to downplay the impact she had on her.
@GoldenSuperKamichu
@GoldenSuperKamichu 5 ай бұрын
You're absolutely right. In the scene where they're walking, you can hear Serie refer to Flamme as 'Anoko(あのこ),' which translates to 'that kid' or 'that girl.' Although Serie might typically use 'Aitsu(あいつ)' to mean 'that guy' in a rougher manner, in this instance, she says 'Anoko.' This choice of words really highlights Serie's perception of Flamme, almost like a child to her. It seems that Serie's deep-seated feelings, especially her grief over Flamme's death, are subtly revealed through this unconscious expression.

This episode was so epic! --- It shows what I think is the true strength of this series which is the contrast between mundane and fantastic. If we breakdown the fight its nothing truly special, she uses 2 or 3 spells the entire fight. Lightning, Fire and Teleport. The effects are cool but not that impressive (they are gorgeous and great, but its just an effect with Frieren in front of it). But it feels truly amazing because for 24 episodes Frieren used either silly folk spells or basic magic, with the occasional utility spell, like the counter spell against Aura or the Barrier Breaking Spell. So now that we finally see Frieren actually fight someone who is a threat to her and has to actually put effort into a fight, using her actual offensive spells, it feels bigger than life. --- Another cool detail is that Frierens reluctance to use anything other than basic combat magic can be seen as training for herself. At first like most I took Ferns comment about how "Its enough to beat this Eras mages" at face value and assumed that her focus on basic spells was simply because the mages are worse nowadays. But after this episode I don't think that is quite right. Frieren is always making a point of how impressive human magic is, how fast it advances and how crafty and skilled human mages are, so her using basic magic "because modern human mages just suck" doesn't feel in character. But this episode gives us another plausible answer, in the form of training. As Frieren says: Zoltrak and modern defensive magic (which is made to counter it), are very new to Frieren, these spells are only around a century old, so she cant really react on instinct. The best way to hone those instincts would be to just use those spells for a few decades until they became familiar. This concept made my mind jump straight to smartphones. -Children born after 2010, grew up with smartphones a PCs, for them handling these devices is as easy as breathing. Older Gen Z and Millennials grew up as the tech was emerging, so we are pretty good with it, but not as good as those who were born into it. Frieren is a Boomer who has to put real effort and practice to understand modern magic, but Fern is a young Gen Z that has been using them since she was a child.

@@crispycreammcfly4782 Though I understand what you mean, and agree with you to an extent. There is a very large difference, between the threat Qual and Aura posed against the threat Clone Frieren posed. Again I mostly agree with your statement, after all, this show is always making the point that just having more mana and powerful spells than your opponent doesn't mean you'll win. But I still believe this is the only time we have been shown where Frieren was in a legitimate, equal position to her adversaries. Qual was her superior in the past, but we only see him in the present where he is still powerful, but Frieren is confident enough to use as him as training for Fern. Aura posed a threat to others, but Frieren herself never showed any actual fear towards her, she acknowledged Auras power but never felt threatened by her. Serie and the Demon King is/was likely threats to her but we haven't seen either of them during a confrontation. When I said that this is the first time she was facing a Threat it wasn't meant to discredit or diminish the impact or power of the other enemies she has faced so far. But to point out, what I feel is a change in mentality between prior fights and this one. This is the first enemy where Frieren, admitted it would be a difficult task and instead of dealing with it, she had to stop and lay out a proper strategy and rely on others to help her.

Then a thousand year later doing exactly what Flamme ask of her being the head of the largest magic association. yep she totally didn't care about Flamme at all.

A couple random thoughts I had from this episode: I think it's a neat detail that Frieren taught Fern that basic offensive spells are enough to defeat modern mages, but when faced against herself, an opponent of similar strength, she uses far more destructive magic. I wonder if that has to do with the historical nature of Zoltraak and defensive magic. I would assume Frieren would normally be opposed to actually killing another mage, so her default objective would be to exhaust all of their mana. Since defensive magic is so mana intensive and was specifically invented to counter Zoltraak, the easiest and safest way to defeat another mage without killing them would be to smother them with enough Zoltraaks to exhaust their mana before your own runs out. However, against an equally powerful mage with an equally massive mana pool, she can't reasonably fight a war of attrition like that. She has to use spells that'll actually go for the kill. Second, how truly ancient is Serie? In episode 4, we learn that "a long time ago" for Frieren is a thousand years. In this episode, Serie says an elf's time is nearly infinite, and that they can put off a decision for a millennium without it hindering them. She then goes on to say that the era of humans will come about in a "mere thousand years." The other times a timespan was described as "mere" were significantly shorter: a mere 10 year adventure, a mere 80 years since the demon king's death, a mere 50 years since the continental magic association was formed. By contrast, Serie says it's been "a long time/many years"(depending on translation) since humans established civilization. This possibly implies that Serie was alive to witness it. From Serie's perspective, low long is "a long time"? This could put her in the order of tens of thousands of years old. There's no way to know for sure, but it's crazy to think about.

Serie came from the mythical age, the era that directly followed the last time the Goddess of Creation appeared in the world. Using Genesis as an analogy, Serie was born not long after Adam and Eve got kicked out of Eden. The evolution of combat magic according to Frieren, Qual, Richter, and Edel is as follows: Accoridng to Edel, originally combat magic was direct creation of elemental forces. This is shown with Frieren's two elemental spells in this ep. There was defensive magic in this era that was designed to protect the caster, but as shown by Frieren clone, you can also just use offensive magic as a defense (using Judrajim and Vohlzanbel to deflect themselves or even Judrajim to deflect Vohlzanbel). A variation of this latter method is something Fern also used in her fight against Lugner, when she simply Zoltraaked his attacks into oblivion. According to Edel, these older elemental-generating spells were super-inefficient because you need to expend a lot of mana to generate those elemental forces you're throwing at the enemy. According to Frieren, this was why Zoltraak was initially unstoppable. Unlike earlier elemental magic, Zoltraak simply bypasses magical defenses, be it spells or magical items. People have compared Zoltraak to a gun, but it's actually a smarter weapon than that. It's more of a hacking tool that delivers a bricking command to the target. More importantly, Zoltraak was far cheaper to cast than any earlier spell. This necessitated an update of exiating defense spells to create one optimized against Zoltraak. This was the origin of "ordinary defensive magic". According to Qual, humans created ODM by inverting the essence of Zoltraak, in effect making a sort of static Zoltraak wall that could stop Zoltraak itself, with the added benefit that it would also stop anything Zoltraak could destroy (which was nearly everything). However, this spell requires more mana to cast than Zoltraak itself, so the way to defeat it with Zoltraak was by forcing a battle of attrition where both sides try to overwhelm the other with Zoltraak spam until one side ran out of mana. According to Richter, this then created a stalemate and forced human mages to figure out other ways to defeat ODM with even less mana consumption than Zoltraak, and they achieved this by using physical objects to attack, becaus ODM was only optimized to deal with Zoltraak. Edel clarified this further by stating that the mages lowered their mana consumption by borrowing those physical objects from nature (instead of trying to create them like older spells would), and this gave them a disadvantage when they didn't have access to their material of choice, as in the case of Kanne and apparently Edel's own team (although we never found out what materials they specialized in). With that said, there was one elemental generating spell everyone still used: fire magic, as used by Denken, but also by Blei and Dunst when they futilely tried to melt the lake Lawine froze. This was the state of magic in the modern era. Everyone uses material borrowing magic to beat ODM which in turn was developed to beat Zoltraak. Some mages can bypass the borrowing limitation by borrowing materials that are always available. Sense uses her own hair, Richter uses soil, and Denken uses air and light. Others can cheat, like Scharf who can cast flower-bed-making magic (hey, Serie, it's useful after all) then turning the flower petals into metal shards to attack. Others simply come up with conceptual attack magic, like Wirbel's Sorganeil and Ubel's cutting magic. In the case of Frieren and Fern, they just ignored the last stage of evolution and adapted their tactics instead of their magic. Frieren doesn't actually need to worry about attrition loss because there is nearly no one around who can beat her in mana pool size, not even most Great Demons. She can use omnidirectional multilevel ODM all day long while spamming Zoltraak at her opponents. However, this wasn't true against herself, so she had to resort back to ancient elemental-generating magic against the clone because, unlike for a human mage, she could handle the mana cost of using them in a protracted battle. Fern is different. Fern is so fast that she wouldn't even need defensive magic after the first few seconds of a fight. Either the opponent would be overwhelmed and forced into full defensive posture (like Ehre) or she could just Zoltraak away tbe opponent's attack (like Lugner). She too can win almost any attrition fight because if the opponent continued to attack they'd be overwhelmed before she ran out of mana or if the opponent went into defense they'd be forced to waste their mana casting ODM while she spammed them with more mana efficient Zoltraak.

24:55 I'm going to yap about this, u can just ignore this lol unfortunately 2 cours b2b show is kinda hard these days, most anime are still being made when it's still airing so to keep that up for so long is going be hard, that's just how the industry is There's exceptions like KyoAni or trigger, pretty sure they have finished all of the production of DunMeshi just the other day, ofc it's an exception because they have low output, they only release 1 show this year instead of other studio releasing like 4+ anime per year Even frieren, which is a show with consistently above average quality (in terms of visual and animation) with some peak that is the best in industry, took a dip in quality in the first few ep of cour 2 (if you watch it like nomal u probably wont notice it, but if you look closely you will notice some broken cuts and off model characters here and there) fortunately its been going up again since the 2nd exam started, I'm not complaining tho, it's incredible they can keep up that level of quality for that many episodes. There's also money issue, it's less risky to make 1 cour show instead of 2 cour unless they know it's a guarantee hit/succes like shonenjump stuff or source with an already big fanbases TLDR : 2 cour show is hard, in terms of schedule and investment money (and also a lot of stuff).
