As someone who grew up with two dark skin parents and with a very light skin sister, it’s completely possible that black people come in all shades . But there is absolutely an unrealistic pattern that focuses on keeping the daughter desirable , by always making her biracial .

Has anyone else realized black women more specifically dark skinned women were only ever represented during the 1995 -2000s era of television when women were the creators of these shows? I think we need more BLACK women as directors and to have full creation control. It’s clear we can’t depend on black men (Tyler perry cough cough).

Actually a lot of the 90s- early 2000s sitcoms we grew up on were produced by white film producers… the difference between today and then are the ACTORS casted. Remember majority of the sitcoms stars were BLACK COMEDIANS during a time when comedy is hot and all the comedians were taking advantage because that’s what sold. The actors had say in WHO they wanted to be on the show so casting was done primarily by them not the producers…

I got my associate’s degree in performing arts. I almost lost my passion for it since I couldn’t even get the chance to audition 😓 casting directors always asked for fair skin or light skin women with straight or curly hair (I’m a dark skin girl with dreads) But when they did wanted a dark skin girl its for the stereotypical ghetto girl, promiscuous girl who had no dad, the sidekick to a lightskin girl, etc. 😞 I cried to my cousin about it and he said one day it’ll change, idk 😢

Well Hollywood isnt even predominantly black for it to be “our” fault BLACK isn’t represented. We as viewers don’t pick and choose which brown/darkskin beauty gets the acting role (even though it would be great if we did)… large part is colorism deeply rooted and engrained in Hollywood. Black people would be alright if they pulled a Tyler Perry (create our OWN film industry, separate from that of White Hollywood). Then I think we’ll truly be alright!

I mean as a brown skinned indian this is already the case in Bollywood. Not even a single dark skinned indian actress is cast. It is very rare and if some manage to be successful they eventually end up bleaching their skin ex kajol, rekha, bipasha etc. And in South india where you will find people darker than Africans the media is dominated by north indian ie fairer actresses, the south Indians ones have extremely light skin or foreigners. I can't even think of a single dark skinned south indian actress. It is so sad and I hope this doesn't happen to black women because growing up they were the ones that made me feel like I was beautiful as well.

I get what you’re saying, but that’s more a combination of colorism and just simply what the AUDIENCE decides to stream🤷🏾‍♀️… the girls you named are hot because that’s who the masses tune in to. In what the video displays is more of its not up to US to pick WHO is going to be casted in these roles or WHO gets represented more… the music industry is largely the FANS picking who comes out on top.

Both my sister are light skin and could possibly look mixed. Family members from my mother side always joked about all of us not having the same daddy but we do. I'm tired of this fake love bullshit, so I'm going to rant & darkskinned women pls LISTEN TO ME. In short, this is the same old "women praise who they aren't threatened by" ⚠️ THIS IS LONG GRAB YOUR POP CORN IF YOU WANNA READ: Of course brownskinned/medium toned women like her, Cyn g, Paris Milan & Crys logic are powerful ally to who they don't see as a threath. You darkskinned women aren't threatening to them, they dont try to get darker but always get lighter and wear wigs of who they constantly says aren't better looking than them. Her, Cyn G & the others are the same thing. If you really think these women think you're beautiful, you're funny, all they do is bash women I.e mixed lightskinned, white, latinas because they know most men prefer them, i repeat they are NOT your ally because they think dark/black is beautiful, they are your allies because they know after yall, they are the least chosen (I said what I said) if not why are they not keeping their darker skin & wearing straight/ curly wigs? Why are they getting lighter & lighter over time? I know women like these will turn white with blonde hair & blue eyes or mixed & lightskinned with Hazel eyes and 3c hair if given the chance in a second life. I will die on that. These type of women attack the women who are more socially desirable I.e mixed/white women, then pretend they are pro black/dark & 4c. My sister told me back women get happy when they see another bw darker than them, and I highly agree with that. Don't be trusting any internet/irl hoochie with low self esteem, they are using this as an excuse to dog out mixed lightskinned & white women not because they love darkskinned women, but because they are threatened by those women. I've especially confirmed it with Chioma. My proof? Well I'm really good at reading people, that & I'm a lightskinned girl who gets hated on by medium skinned /non dark women while in turn they be shouting black is beautiful, hyping of the darkskinned girl in our group, wanting to hang out with her but always avoiding going out with me, be buying lightening stuffs on the low & drooling over bi racial girls when no one is looking, while simultaneously acting like they don't care about black guys preference or this skin tone stuff. I'm Nigerian and I know ALOT of bleaching local companies, and I'll tell you most of the "before & after pics" and customers of thses bleaching businesses are NOT darkskinned women, most are browskinned women who bleach to white or light bright and lie that they started eating fruits. Anyways back to my initial story befire I write w book on that, I had a back and forth argument with Chioma more than a year ago, she said something along the line of: "You darkskinned women are just bitter" Just because me & a couple of girls pointed out that most of the girls in her modeling agency were mixed & very lightskinned. She kept trying to make it seem like I & other girls were darkskinned & jealous of brown skin women 😭😭🤣🤣 that's another they do in a heartbeat to darkskinned women, they'll insult your "blackness" IMMEDIATELY bc they know deep down they are chosen over yall. BUT THAT WAS NOT THE CASE. Like I said earlier, we were only pointing out that her modeling agency (which EXCLUDED white women, like that isn't bitter) was only full of light & damn near white blond mixed girls, but she kept calling us us bitter, tryna act like we were saying brown skin & light girls weren't supposed to be there (she was tryna group in brown/light girls together 🤣) Like I said, they always drooling over us & pick our aesthetic when no one is looking or a black man isn't involved, I bet if a black dude owned that modeling agency, suddenly he should have found more dark girls & the mixed lighties would have been the devil for being over represented. But she can do it, no biggie, why? Because despite everything bw say, they want lightskinned mixed girls to be the face of black beauty and they 100% adore white girls. I'm tired of this fake love bullshit, so I'm going to rant & darkskinned women pls LISTEN TO ME. ⚠️ THIS IS LONG GRAB YOUR POP CORN: Of course brownskinned/medium toned women like her, Cyn g, Paris Milan & Crys logic are powerful ally to who they don't see as a threath. Don't be trusting any internet hoochie with low self esteem, they are using this as an excuse to dog out mixed lightskinned & white women not because she loves darkskinned women, I've especially confirmed it with Chioma. Anyways ack to my initial story befire I write w book on that, I had a back and forth argument with Chioma more than a year ago, she said something along the line of: "You darkskinned women are just bitter" Just because me & a couple of girls pointed out that most of the girls in her modeling agency were mixed & very lightskinned. She said alot of colorist things but i can't remember, it's in her community tab, but idk if it's all deleted. I haven't grasped any malice from chrissie or eloho, why? Because they are darkskinned women, those are your only true allies. Me & and other non darkskinned women truly at the end don't give a shit about yall, we are always trying to look for things that'll make us more desirable & competitive in the looks market above any other woman regardless of race & phenotype.

The saddest part about this video is all the iconic receipts you added. All those shows and movies are so beloved and I used to wonder why I wanted to be light skinned with hair texture like someone who is mixed. On top of that, my mom used to tell me how happy she was that I wasn’t as dark as my dad…. As I got older I couldn’t believe she said those things to me. I’m brownskin and my younger brother (whose father was Hispanic) is lightskin. Now growing up, I didn’t have insecurities about my complexion but my mother always isolated/ alienated me and my brother was very cold and distant and I couldn’t understand why. It wasn’t until my brother and I got older that he told me our mother used to tell him things like “she’s jealous of you because you’re light” or “she’s jealous because you have ‘good hair’”… and it broke me because those weren’t my feelings at all! Sidenote can we talk about how Disney really played in our faces when it came to colorism. I truly feel like Coco Jones deserves better than what she got. The Cosby show also had that oldest daughter who was also biracial, Sondra. And it was always soooo strange to me. Also on Greenleaf the bio father of Grace Greenleaf was the light skinned father from sister sister, so that wasn’t an accurate mother father child combo either. Period.

If you think about it, the Cosby Show was the CLOSEST true depiction of what an “everyday black family” would look like which is why it was so relatable… it’s not hard to fathom that a LIGHTSKIN mother and BROWNSKIN father would make various BROWN and LIGHTSKIN children😂

Did you know that Bill Cosby and his wife (a light-skin woman) originally wanted Clair to be a Dominican house wife to 5 kids as a throwback to Lucy and Dez (Clair was suppose to have moments she spoke in spanish when upset like how Dez did for a comedic effect)? Ironically, Black America would not have the Cosby show as a TV show example of a positive black family if Hollywood had not PUSHED Cosby to have an American black family with Clair being a BLACK lawyer. Cosby tried to buck against the network. If you notice, he does write parts tgat has Clair speaking Spanish. With that known, now you see how the oldest daughter was casted with a biracial phenotype.

What kills me is blk ppl talk about how 2 brown parents can make a lighter child in this all the time distracting folks from the real issue. Yes it happens, but most folks in our families and community who have darker or brown parents mostly are the colors of their parents. We can stop using scenarios that aren't majority.I see plenty of black mothers and daughters who are carbon copy of eachother and beautiful. I see too many movies with the offspring the daughter is the lighter but not the sons.If you been in black communities and look around you typically see brown skin or dark women and it's not a secret. Its like ppl in general are ashamed of that's how it is . Steve Harvey like hollywood goofies sure is ashamed of his bio daughters.

Anything he or any BM director or producer is involved in I prepare myself for some sort of colorism, texturism, erasure, discrimination, or tarnished image of brown/dark skin women. Kenya Barris( Director of You People)is obsessed with biracial people imho. Look at all of his shows and who he casts. He tried mixed ish and it did t work and then he did a show about his life and then again, casted Rashida Jones ( biracial) as his wife. Granted, his ex wife was biracial, but this should tell you something. Truth is that we as a people ( those of us in Hollywood) help with the erasure of darker skinned black people in Hollywood. It’s another expression of our own anti blackness.
