In Adam Smith's first book, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, he wanted to understand how human beings decide what is right and wrong? By what process do people come to find some things morally required, others morally prohibited, and still others morally indifferent? Watch this video to find out.

Unfortunately, the sentiment against distracted driving appears ineffective even after the introduction of legislation....

Drunk driving took much longer to be heavily frowned upon than cell phone driving

Could you please link the study where it was suggested that the sentiment towards texting-while-driving shifted long before the introduction of legislation? Thanks! :)

A more pertinent example could be smoking. People in the 70s, 80s used to smoke in cinema halls, restaurants, and even hospitals. But slowly when it became clear that even passive smoking is unhealthy, civil society members started banning its usage in several public spaces. Smokers became careful esp in front of children and elders. Finally, several governments decided to clear overarching bans on its usage in public spaces.

Anand, I like to think that I helped butterfly-effect this change into social reality. In 1989, right after I got my driver’s license, my date and I experienced such a movie lobby smoker, essentially a human chimney in the Ohio city on which The Simpsons would later be based. At first I awkwardly amended the Superman phrase to Lois Lane when she lit up on her balcony, “you know, you really shouldn’t smoke in our faces Ma’am,” followed by a mini mushroom cloud of smoke followed by the human chimney declaring her rights in a public space. Then I declared our rights in a public space. My date tugged at me, muttering something about not being confrontational so then I confronted her. Seeing this situation potentially drive away customers in the long line, all getting smoked like sardines, I suspect the ticket guy let us go into the movie early. It irked me for the rest of high school that our human chimney won her battle. Guess we won the war.

Great video! But I'd argue that social norms don't necessarily = morality, unless you take a social constructivist view.

When we make fools of those that obey the law, how can we be surprised at an increase in crime?
