The ESSENTIAL (& Simple!) Mowing Technique We Use To NOT RUT UP A Lawn

Todays tip is regarding how to not leave divots or some best practices to not rut up a lawn! I know it's a simple topic for a lot of us, but I've actually received this question quite a bit, so here you go!
When I first got started cutting lawns, I tell you what, I had zero resources. To me it was simply retrace the same lines from the week before, and rinse and repeat. Oh how little I knew! (and still do sometimes!).
What I soon realized was that we were creating divots or little bumps and grooves in the lawn, that it was starting to affect the mowing quality of the work we were doing. Every now and then I would change directions, but it was really an afterthought. There wasn't really any rhyme or reason behind it.
Well today we're going to share with you guys a simple little practice you can incorporate into your business, and that is changing up your mowing direction weekly. There is nothing more ascetically pleasing as well in my opinion than a nice striped lawn with a cross pattern added to it.
Whether you go N to S, E to W, or diagonal, changing up the mowing pattern is a great habit to get into. It really helps alleviate any compaction you may be contributing to with the lawn mower, and help to not create deep ruts or grooves in the lawn. Best tip I can give you, change up the direction every week!
Hope this one helped you guys out! I wish someone explained something like this to me when I was first getting started, even as simple as a topic as it is.
Curious, do you guys also offer lawn rolling as an additional service to your clients to help with the after affects of a regular mowing season and constant wear and tear from the heavy lawn mowers we use? Love to hear your guys thoughts, leave us a comment down below!

You should explain the three point turn to the audience. So they know how to not make all the turn marks.and stay off the concrete. Lol. Some people will call about the green tracks or maybe even the black from the tires.

Great video Brian! I get a lot of call for lawn rolling in the spring months, while the ground is still soft from the melted snow. Got a free pull behind lawn roller and had the tractor to pull it with, so I made pretty good money at it this year. It was kind of a nice transition till the grass started growing. One customer mentioned how much better his yard looked after it had been rolled in the spring.

I have a water filled leg power roller and I love it. Even here in Virginia we get some shrink/swell from winter time and of course a few stray mole hills. My lawn is zoysia cut at 1.5" so it shows just about anything that's not level. Rolling is a must for me, maybe once a month and especially as we come out of winter.

Good point on rutting. I'm always mindful of divots with turns, but hadn't thought of rutting by running same patterns. I will now. Thanks👍 As far as rolling... I bought a roller thinking I would have requests for it. I have yet to roll a lawn by request🤔 I use it on our lawn to stay in tune, just in case lol.

Great tips Brian! I try to change directions with each cut, but I’m starting to see ruts in the outline pattern. The outline is the outline, so any tips on eliminating that? I’ve been trying to make that pass different, but it adds more trim work. I’m definitely gonna work on that 3 pt turn!!

Brian, this is off the subject a little bit... but I know of a guy that really grew his business by going to new construction neighborhoods and once the builders moved off, they came in and prepped the dirt for sod, put down starter fertilizer, set up a fertilizer plan and eventually a sprinkler service and then the mowing contracts..... it's a lot to oversee, and it takes some ground work getting in with developers... but it's a great opportunity to have a say on landscaping from the perspective of the lawn mower.... might make a great topic for a video buddy... Cheers!

i have an older toro belt drive walk behind that i use .. at first i was divoting with it by turning to sharp .. Keith Kalfas gave me a nice tip and it took some practice but what i do now is i turn my mower towards where my next row is and then i pull on the handle toward me and this makes the pivot wheel turn backwards a bit and then i go forward as i line up my next row .. its pretty sweet unless your going on an incline then its tougher...

I mow in the 4 directions. It seams to work well for me and easy to remember. Except for the border where I do two laps discharging inward do I have a place to turn around to avoid turning on paved areas (when possible) as well as plants and buildings.

I change up every cut, using all 4 angles, so I'm only cutting each direction at most twice per month. However, on Memorial Day Weekend I'll do the 'X' to create a checkered pattern because Indy 500! As for rolling, there's a tiny window at the very beginning of spring, just after the thaw, where rolling actually has a benefit. The ground is soft & pliable, but not saturated.

I change mine every week. I typically mow twice a week so I do the same pattern twice in a row. When I want to make my lawn look its best I do a diagonal line from my drive way. I double cut that just to make thr stripes pop a little more. Other than that I change it up regularly.

I try, but there are some lawns, you just cant alter the direction because of the lay of the yard, banks etc....so i try and offeset the stripes.....dont know if that makes sense or not, i have almost no yards that are nice and flat and level like that one...mine are rough , hilly, banks , country yards....so i do the best i can....no complaints yet...lol

One of the yards I take care of has so many bumps and holes I don’t think it matters what I’d do. The yard is just jacket up. I do what’s easier for me and what looks best for the customer. They don’t use the yard at all. Plus previous company’s have rutted the lawn hood so if you go across the tufts it’s a violent ride. I did it once and I hit so many bumps so hard I actual broke off part of my finger nail from banging it into the steering wheel on my tractor.

Honestly we "establish" mowing patterns and always mow in the same stripe every three mowings. Go on "light", come on "dark". Looks like most guys do the same as far as I can tell. I think that's one of the biggest tricks to good stripes. Most home owners I've spoke with don't know that.

I also get a number of people asking if we roll lawns. Typically I found them to be people that mow their own lawns instead of them being potential mowing customers. I did want to possibly do lawn rolling ONLY if they're going to have us do aeration too, then maybe it will be worth it. Also, why would you compact the lawn (which isn't good) without you aerating it? Also, do overseeding at that time too. Yes, I get it about "spinning too many plates". ;-)

Looking for some ideas for new videos?? You can literally make the same exact videos every week Keith Kalfas style about how to start a lawn/landscape from nothing by telling your life story about how you worked a dead end job, you were about to be evicted, bought a cheap craiglist truck, borrowed tools, and then started doing jobs until you worked up enough money to progress? Lmao just having fun, you the man Keith!!

Hey that overlap tip for smaller patches is a good one. I'll put that to use. Lucky, I have not run into the poop issue. Depending on severity, my thought is I'm just not going to deal with it. I understand the "motivational" aspect of the Fees, but as noted in this case, pffft....I'll pay it and You clean up after me and my dog. I want to show up; trim, mow, blow and get on. One of the aspects of pet ownership is responsibility. And you, customer, are failing at that. Says a little bit about the customers integrity.
