How can you be a leader if you don't know what's going on? Companies should hire supervisors from within.

That is an excellent question, and in some cases, companies will educate their newly promoted leaders with the knowledge and training to effectively lead but that does not always mean that the people who are familiar with the business can lead. Consider this scenario: If a doctor's office required more doctors, would you promote the health care workers that have been there for years to the role of doctor, or would you hire someone with the education to effectively perform the job? If there is room to grow in a business and there are team members who can transition into a higher role, most companies will hire someone from within. If, however, a business feels that an outside source is a better option, they will make that choice. We hope that answers your question!

@Front Line Leadership Being a doctor is a hard skill. Leadership is a soft skill and it is subjective. I don't see the analogy..........

@@SwolHumanist We respect your response. The core of that analogy was to highlight that the skills required to be effective in that role may not be possible within an organization. Not always, but sometimes. If your teams do not possess the skills required to lead, then it is a better fit to bring in someone new with those skills required skills and become familiar with the business. We encourage businesses to promote from within, but it is also important to recognize when that is not the best decision for the future of that business.
