In this 1962 radio lecture, Ayn Rand explains her theory of esthetics (the branch of philosophy concerned with art), discussing the role that art and literature play in human life. “Do not make the mistake of concluding that the purpose of art is education or enlightenment or propaganda, or any kind of narrow didactic message,” Rand observes. “Art is the expression of men’s deepest, most fundamental, most philosophical values.”
Delving into the art form of the novel, Rand discusses the philosophical roots of both the Romanticist and Naturalist schools of literature. Critical of modern literature, she explains why she prefers Romantic heroes and what it means for them to be “larger than life,” and she identifies a few remnants of Romantic literature in contemporary times.
The Q&A that follows the lecture expands on its subject matter and includes the following topics:
• The defining characteristics of the Romanticist school of art
• The relationship between art and “sense of life”
• Free will and determinism in art
• Costume novels and detective stories
• Artists as abstract thinkers
• The plot in literature
• Epic literature and Greek tragedies
• Homer’s heroes
• Oedipus Rex, Macbeth and Othello

I was introduced to the writings of Ayn Rand in 1965, the Book was 'Capitalism the Unknown Ideal', I was hooked and began reading everything I could find written by Rand. I made sure my children also read Rand and I have never had a day of regret, they are Constitutional Conservatives. Sending them off to college, any college, never worried us for a second. It's the most valuable asset we have, keeps us sane.

Great to hear this lecture. The Romantic Manifesto has always been one of my favorite books. I am not an objectivist for say, but Rand has opened my eyes a lot and I just admire and even adore her passion for mankind so much. I have a couple years back subscribed to this channel, it is one of the best for philosophical thought. Lately you all have really been knocking it out of the park, then again you do that quite a bit. This channel is often a breath of fresh air.

At what point do I cease to exist, and at what point do I know that I am? Can there ever be answers to questions that falter? To be is to be that can never be altered. Empty your mind for clarity of view the absence of thought is not the absence of you. We come not out of the world, nor whither away. If all is oneself where does one stray?

Art is closest that humans ever get to playing God. It's basically us creating the world in our own image. In a sense, the art we embrace is a reflection not only how we see the world and ourselves, but also what's possible in the future.

Wtf! The oriental classical music has very well defined beginning middle and end alaap gat and jhala. Freedom within discipline not chaos is the main philosophy of it.

True. The presenter was quoting someone there, but I agree with you. I studied some hindustani classical music and found the structure of both its theory and its practice to be remarkably well-defined. But also, a bulk of the work of creating the music's logical progression lies with the performer. So yeah, as you said, freedom within discipline is the key.

we could potentially raise the art argument to a new level. knowing what we know now. Humanity has completely and totally detached from art. Art became diluted, meaningless, and cliche. Soon they well know why art exists. i can raise ayn on this one. and win. The art. :)

Except that JC was a wind of mysticism and self-sacrifice so poisonous that the negative consequences are still being felt. If humanity survives, history will eventually be re-categorized, as it will be understood that in 2023 we were still in the Middle Ages.
