The Rules-Based International Order, and American strategic leadership (NATO, the World Bank etc) effectively means that the US gets to be the one calling the shots, and in order to pretend to be living under a shared set of rules, the US has also had to reserve for themselves the right to BREAK the rules - or to delegate that right to its favourites (e.g. Israel, Ukraine or various Latin American dictators and juntas over the last sixty years). The US is strutting around on the world stage, making open or covert interventions, subversion operations, overthrowing a regime here and blocking the exports of a country there...and the EU, generally, comes after, cleans up and advocates why everything is fine, the US and its proxies are within their rights and people should live with it - while for example the people of Crimea did not have any right to question the new regime the US had helped put in place. Europe and others also get to pay much of the costs for Americas' wars and excesses. But the Euro elite accepts this, as some sort of contractual agreement: we accept American overlordship and "protection" because we decided that countries here in Europe are unable to stand up for themselves and handle their security affairs on their own, to be in charge of our own future. This blanket defence of the Pax Americana has become clearer than ever before with the Ukraine War; the EU Commission and others are really acting like US assets. (By "the Euro elite" I mean people in the political sphere and the media who identify with this EU/NATO world view and the need for a quasi-federal top-heavy EU, whether they're working in Brussels or in their home countries - because since around 2000, the EU level has become part of the way politicians think on the national level too. Young politicians who want to climb up the ladder are schooled into thinking along Euro-federal lines, into accepting the pretensions and prerogatives of Brussels, because if they want to be able to continue to Brussels and have a career there as well, they have to be mentally part of that world too)

As an American who is absolutely disgusted by the death and destruction wreaked upon other countries by our severely corrupt and lying government, including the horrendous indifference to the murderous assault on Maui to our own people, I am so happy to hear Clare and Mick stand up for what is right. The cowardice and lack of acknowledgement by other MP's astounds me. I could speak to a pit of rattlesnakes and get a more empathetic and reasonable response. Countries must stand up for themselves and get rid of the yoke that has been placed upon them by NATO and other unelected international figures that are trying to destroy our world.

So many people in politics and in the media have to keep an eye on people or powers they have a hidden debt of loyalty to. Practically no governments or diplomats in the EU/NATO-sphere today are able to run diplomatic talks, make proposals etc with leaders outside of that sphere without checking back with Uncle Sam and making sure it's fine with him. Even before 2022, European leaders had very limited space to talk with Putin independently of the positions of the USA, in that sense. They're not fully in charge, because they always have to check with Washington if it's sensitive, and this is far more pronounced now than it was in the 1970s and 80s.
