In traditional Ashkenazi Jewish communities all over the world, such as in my home country South Africa, the evil eye is very much something that you can 'feel' within the community. My Bobba (grandmother) was particularly concerned about not drawing attention to ourselves & a woman that I once helped take groceries to her car was very concerned about people (and me) not thinking she was so flashy as to drive such an expensive car. It was her son-in-law's. In my life, it has usually been women who would give evil eye & chamsah (hamsa) jewelery & keychains. Also, if somebody was getting sick often or had a string of bad luck then people (usually women) would say that all the mezuzah (tiny scripture scrolls hung to the upper right of any doorway in the home) should be checked for smudges to letters or other defects. In fact, my mom had ours checked when we ran into some family issues a couple of years ago. Evil eyes now hang in my boyfriend's business (gift from my family). I've also found that Chinese cultures have very similar understandings of not drawing attention to your successes & the cost of jealousy on self & others.

What you said made me look again at the practice of self-deprecation, which is favoured in many cultures over boasting: the opposite of what boxers and rap musicians do. It's not just modesty, then, but also self-protection against those who might "look askance."

My nonna told me that when she was pregnant a woman came up to her to ask her how far along she was and touched her. My bisnonna saw this and accused the woman of sending malocchio on her womb and it turned into a fight! I have a lot of malocchio stories 👁 I hope to see a video on the spiritual history and folklore of Tarantella and Tarantismo💃

Here in Sardegna to avoid bad luck is common to touch the object o thing you are congratulating about. For example, if I make a compliment to my friend's hair, in order to prevent bad luck I'd immediately touch her hair as protection 💗

I received an similiar oil ritual in a village at the island of Samos in Greece which worked immediately. I had not believed the existance of evil eye before. But I saw the oil dissolving in water and the pain was leaving my head, which I had suddenly caught on the way to visit a friend, passing some elder women. My friend fortunately recognized what had happened and knew the ritual .

Greetings from Mesopotamia! It's really part of our culture here and people have different ways to ward it off.. My grandma used to tell us to carry coarse salt in our pockets and wear turquoise jewellery.... Some burn certain kinds of incense mixed with salt like (Peganum Harmala).. Some even scare the givers of the evil eye to distract them at the time they feel them looking or giving a compliment which is funny :)

@@PamSeshetaI’m American/Iranian first generation and as a young child my mom would do that ritual about once a week or so and I am 51 now and she is alive and she did that ritual about a year ago in her front yard with a big tree 🌲 for some privacy but not to a couple of neighbors across the street and my sister was present for it and she kinda scolded her for it because she said the neighbor may think your a witch 🧙‍♀️! So I’m wondering 😮if my mom is a witch now ?!?!? Holy smokes plus she insists on me hanging an evil eye 🧿 just like that in my door 🚪 way too! She was born in Iran 🇮🇷 of course I think I said that to you. I have been fascinated with witches especially in recent years and honestly can’t explain why but they are super popular in pop culture here so, yeah. Your comment is an eye 👁 opener to me. Can you please tell me more about your rituals and stuff from your family? To see if they compare to me

It's so fascinating to hear about other evil eye traditions! In my Mexican-American family, evil eye is usually attribute to lust. When I was in my late teens I started wearing evil eye charms after multiple run ins with creepy old men that left me very ill.

I'm definitely guilty of lusting but I have always wanted to reform that behavior. I think an evil eye was cast upon me and I haven't lifted it and so I act out with the same indiscretion. To give an evil eye as a reaction to perceiving an evil eye seems just as damaging.

The south of Italy (which is the only part of Italy this belief is held) has Spanish Catholocism as it's paticular brand of Catholocism so it's no surprise Mexicans would also hold this belief.

Always so interesting and informative. Being Turkish, I've definitely been around people who believed in the evil eye, especially my superstitious grandmother who would often pray over me because she believed I had been effected by nazar, and a blue nazar amulet was never very far away. I have a few myself, but they're props for a web series rather than serious amulets 😄

Very interesting video! I´m from Buenos Aires, and my grandmother (an italian descendant) used to cure "ojeado" with the oil on water and gestures and prayer method that you mentioned. If the oil gathered in one eye-shaped blob, the you had "mal de ojo". She was ok with teaching anyone, not just blood relatives, but it should only be done on christmas or I belive, saint johns day.

Double meaning of the glass amulet of the evil eye being blue or green. From what I learn from my Sicilian grandfather back in the 1980's in the USA. Blue is clean cool water which gives life on hot days. " May your thirst be relieved." Green is plant growth which you feed your family and herds on. " May your hunger be feed."

Hi from Greece! We spit inside our shirt to keep the evil eye away 😂 The special prayer that you say to dissolve the eye has to be passed from relatives male to female or female to male, during the Good Friday. My grandmother taught it to me.

I have definitely done the oil thing. Though I have never heard of the oils dissolving. More like the oil pooling to form an eye is the one I know. Super interesting thanks as always! My wife's Belarusian family also has a lot of interesting practices around the evil eye. Some are Jewish inspired some are Slavic.

@@nikitachaykin6774 it's mostly her mother and grandmother. Spitting seems to deflect evil. Also anything metal seems to work and they will pin stuff to clothing to try and deflect it. I haven't heard knocking on wood from them.

In Romania the evil eye is called "deochi" (ochi means eye in Romanian) and " a deochia" is the verb. The most prevalent protection measure is wearing something red to draw the evil eye away from you. Babies often wear a thin red ribbon around their wrists. There are special incantations, their main purpose being to drive the evil eye back to the person who cast it. Apparently if you yawn while saying the incantation the person you are doing it for is surely afflicted by the evil eye. Lately I've discovered there are many superstitions that have survived in the Romanian general unconscious from the Ancient Roman times, including spitting to prevent the evil eye. We spit and say " Să nu-i fie de deochi" (meaning something along the lines of "May the evil eye not fall on him/her') There's also the belief that those with blue eyes are the ones most inclined to cast the evil eye. (I have blue eyes, but apart from a resting bitch face, I've never cast the evil eye on anybody). On the other hand, I remember my grandmother saying that my dad would cast the evil eye really easily, and he has brown eyes.

Love it! I am Siciliana-Calabrese-Americana from Colorada with my Sud Italiana famiglia from Pueblo, Colorado (they were brought there because Rockefeller sent scouts to the poorest regions of Europe to bring workers to the steel mill there) . When my father was born they immediately placed a necklace around his neck of the horns hand gesture pointed down to “keep the devil away” from him. He still has it even though he’s not a believer hahah. As an adult I started using it towards people, I have always wondered the true significance from back home. Thank you :)

Here in Sardinia, so Italy, is very similar to the rest of the peninsula but we call it "ogu malu" in sardinian, also the cure is called "sa mexina de s'ogu" (the "x" goes for the sound "sh") and out evil eye talisman is called "su coccu", a little stone given to people at weddings or to a newborn. Another amulet is the "occhio di Santa Lucia" (Saint Lucy eye), that I think is used also in the peninsula, and is a calcareous operculum that a certain kind of mollusk uses to protect itself, but it resembles an eye in a certain way, and Saint Lucy is a saint related to them, and idk why but this little thing is thought to be a lucky charm or an amulet against evil eye

My grandmother actually believed in evil eye. She was from Western Ukraine, Ivano-Frankivsk oblast, Rohatyn rayon. She described it with the word наврочити 'to put an evil eye' (which, apparently, is etymologically related to the old word for 'to say', "ректи" - funnily enough, it's related to the word for 'lesson', because it also is related to speaking, and the Ukrainian word "уроки" can mean both 'evil eye, curse' and 'lessons') When we were small children, she would often try to protect us from evil eye because children are supposed to be most vulnerable to it. I remember that ways to protect from the evil eye is to wear some piece of clothes inside out (this works even if it's not visible, e.g. if it's underwear) or wearing some piece of red clothes, especially a red string bracelet. I remember that she also performed a ritual to remove evil eye. I don't remember the exact details, but it involved burning matches, dropping them into water and giving the water for us to drink. I've googled and I could find the references to such ritual in the internet (they also involve reading a prayer), so apparently it's a living tradition. My parents never believed that and dismissed that as superstition, and I don't believe in it either.

A thing that she does to protect herself from the evil eye is also to take a red ribbon and wet it with Holy water. Then you can take the ribbon with you whenever you go out of the house, but you need to be careful and hide it under your clothes, the others must not see it

One of the times I was in Naples ( one of my favorite cities), I spent some time in a souvenir shop talking to the owners. I bought a small terracotta figure of Pulcinella and the owner gave me a cornicello. He also told me that I should do i corni with my fingers if I suspected someone was trying to give me the malocchio, and also to say (writing from memory and I hope to get it right), “Aglii favaglii, fattur che non quagli, sciù sciù cittavett!” The cornicello was given to me and did break, but in a box during a move - not sure if it still counts. Anyway, grazie mille per questi video. Mi piacianno molto e imparo molte cose interessantissime.

One of my grandfather's aunts (the 7th out of 9 sisters, I was told) was believed to have healing powers. She was long dead before i was born, but someone told me she would do segnature (the cross sign and prayers) on one's hurting body part (most often on the arthritis of other women's hands etc.) and when she was too old to move from home or to receive guests, she did segnature by phone calls. Ciao Angela! Vorrei, prima di tutto, ringraziarti per il modo chiarissimo con il quale diffondi tutta questa preziosissima informazione (addirittura in inglese!!). Con i tuoi video mi sento ogni volta un po' più vicina alla mia italianità :) Dopo di che, volevo raccontarti che in Ecuador esiste una versione del malocchio che colpisce i bambini, si chiama "espanto", che significa "spavento". Le cause sono le stesse del malocchio ma il sintoma principale è un'ipersensibilità nel bimbo, che lo rende particolarmente proclive a piangere in continuazione. Altri sintomi sono i problemi di digestione, febbre e difficoltà a dormire.. insomma, un incubo per tutta la famiglia.

I saw the evil eye in action at work. Two friends of mine , but not friends of each other, were having a conversation with me. The one came up and showed me that she had won a very nice expensive prize at work that day. I was excited for her,but my other friend was quiet and said nothing. Then next day a misfortune had occurred. She came to work late because she was in a car accident. I knew quickly it had to have been envy that my other friend had casted upon her. I work with Lucifer and I felt instantly to tell her that her misfortune would turn to great fortune as she would gain a new car from this accident. She was skeptical, but sure enough she had gained a new luxurious car better than her last. This is how I rewrite curses. I invoke a "silver lining ". This has worked very well for me for many years. Here's what happened to me. Last month, I performed an Indian ritual to get rid of the evil eye. Can't remember the exact date but it was a Saturday evening with Aries rising. I took a lemon and circled it seven times anti-clockwise over my head, face, arms etc (all the body parts). You can't speak to anyone while performing it and after it's done you must put the lemon in a zip lock bag and discard it into the bin. Then you must wash your hands and feet before touching anything at all. I followed all the rules as said by the youtuber from whom I learnt it. The next day was a Sunday. I had a brand new bottle of nail polish which I needed to apply. Note: The bottle was not damaged or cracked or anything. It was perfect. I bought it online and checked for damages by opening it upon arrival. It was expensive and from a well reputed merchant and they charged me extra for delivery because of the fragile items. The neck and body of the bottle was perfect when I opened it to check upon delivery. Every nail polish bottle came in a separate individual box as well. Now even before I could twist the lid to open the bottle, the body of the bottle just fell off from the lid as soon as I opened the box in which the individual nail polish came in.The bottle was broken at the neck with the neck stuck to the lid and the nail polish just leaked from the body of the bottle to the floor as the broken bottle went rolling across the floor. This is the same room in which I performed the ritual where the nail polish was kept. All the other bottles of nail polishes were used except this one. This was not only weird but very disappointing. I wonder what will be damaged next. Imagine your bottle of eyeliner all leaked out and gone right before you have to apply it and go to work. You are so right! The glass horn breaking in Italian tradition is actually a positive diagnostic test for malochhio. Even nail polish bottles are made up of glass

Another interesting presentation. I'd love to hear what topics and themes of interest you can make of Willem Taal's (Eldermans) Gnome Manuscript. Only tangentially related to the evil eye; apparently hands are a big factor in 'controlling' Gnomes. [Shrug!] --------------------------------------------- Of all the topics discussed and dark notions iv found searching YT over the years nothing has surprised and shocked me as much as your heterodox approach to "smashing that like button". It is so good to share this! I feel like it's common in modern North America to convey envy of someone's possessions or achievements as a form of flattery and congratulations. I am Mexican from the general Tamaulipas and Zacatecas area. My maternal side of the family are big on the evil eye and my grandma was a well known healer in her small town with many stories of her healing people when medicine could not. Here we use raw eggs to diagnose and cleanse the person by running it down their body with incantations and prayer and then breaking open the egg in water. As far as I am aware it is a long running family tradition that I was blessed enough to be brought into. It's now one of the most beloved parts of my craft and I love weirding people out with it or making egg jokes bc of it. Also here we call it "El Mal de ojo" or "El ojo"!

aah i've been waiting for this! thank you so much, great video. my family and i visited italy a couple times when i was very young. i remember all the grannies came and ushered me and the cousins inside because the "zingari" were coming and that they would cast malocchio on us. was pretty spooky for me at the time tbh

I just came from Dr. Henry’s compliment video and the mixture of both of your knowledge and wisdom is outstanding im just now starting to broaden my reach on my religious integrity and I feel like your channels are so fantastic. My grandmother was a second generation Italian immigrant from Sicily and always made the horns gesture towards people but would never explain it and just kinda winked 😅 no one knows what she was up to but thank you from a distant Italian American

my grandmother would use an egg and leaves/branches to sweep the evil eye away, she called it a “barrida” which means to sweep.

Here in Brazil, the christians generally say "God bless you/it" after making a compliment in order to avoid casting an unintentional evil eye. The pic of the ceramic horn on the thumb of the video reminded me that, here in Brazil, an amulet against evil eye is a red pepper called "dedo de moça" (lady's finger) 🌶️ that looks a lot like it. An interesting video about social and philosophical questions around the evil eye is "Envy" by ContraPoints.

Grazie, Angela: Once again, a very informative, educational video. Please allow me to introduce to the conversation an adjacent consideration: the power inherent in the eyes, and in particular in any prolonged gaze or stare. It’s been proven that people being stared at can feel it from behind. There’s also scientific evidence that our bodies, and our eyes especially, emit photons. (Not quite the “rays” from Superman’s eyes, but I would guess a sense of this is where the idea came from.) Whenever we direct our gaze at something, our intention is focused there, and psychically speaking, we impact it; furthermore, in the realm of ordinary reality with our eyes we can manifest our wishes either to have or to avert an experience. It seems to me that this is why, as many commentators on your video have testified, some variation of malocchio and the various defenses against it are found worldwide. Lastly, the eyes are reflective, and the intentions that emanate from them come back to a person.

Interesting. In the American Protestant culture, pride is a particularly important sin. “Pride goeth before the fall”. It was impressed upon me that one must never boast of one’s achievements, to downplay them or attribute them to God rather than one’s own work, it was even wrong to say oneself was ‘lucky’. This seems, now, to be a kind of ‘ward’ to deflect envy. While envy is also a sin, it seems that pride is worse because it attracts envy.

Slammed that subscribe button. I had a glass evil eye on my keychain and dropped it in my driveway one day. It broke and the same night a bird got caught in my bird feeder and died. Energy surrounds us all.

A longtime friend who unfortunately had a stroke became jealous of me because I had not had a stroke; and so, she was finding fault with everything and anything to do with myself. I had not volunteered to be her punching bag. I have my own long list of old-age injuries and illnesses. So that to keep a happy spirit, I had to let her go. Don't let anyone do a version of the evil eye on yourself.

This is superb, Dr. Puca--thanks so much! I had heard from someone who is American of Sicilian descent that the horns gesture aimed at someone would effectively cast the Malocchio on the other person. Is that a regional variation, or just a very bad piece of misinformation? (Or just those wacky Sicilians with their own peculairities?) I had also heard that the fascina in Ancient Rome would protect against the Evil Eye. I haven't watched Dr. Henry's video yet, but perhaps he discusses that...but I can see how that would make sense. ;)

Oh wow, from 2020-this year I had multiple awful headaches and I usually never have them. It once got so bad during my birthday weekend that I was scared I was ill. I had another headache RIGHT after coming from a professional convention with 2 people I know, I was leary about having them around when I was there so I wouldn't be surprised that it was them who did this

Great video. I always thought an evil witch (or ill intentioned person) needed to cast il Malocchio on you; I didn't realize it could be caused by envy or someone drawing attention to your good luck (like a jinx).

I think it's a very common phenomena. I feel like I was raised in a constantly toxic environment where the more evil eye one could put out or attract was somehow a good thing!?
