During the reign of King Henry VIII its estimated that around 70,000 people were executed inside of his Kingdom. This puts the figure at roughly 3% of the population of Tudor England meeting their ends in bloody ways. There were a number of incredibly high profile people executed by Henry including two of his wives, his closest friends and also his advisors. He tried to also eliminate any possibly threats to his throne that may have existed, and one woman who met an incredibly bloody fate inside the walls of the Tower of London was Margaret Pole, the Countess of Salisbury. Even despite being executed at the age of 67, Henry deemed her as a threat due to her links to the House of York.

This execution solidifies the pure awfulness of Henry VIII. Anne and Catherine being killed are horrendous, but this one angers me especially.

She raised her children to be active threats to the recently-created Tudor regime. Any monarch worth their salt would seek to eliminate threats to their House (unless, perhaps, Henry had been gifted with several healthy sons.)

Let’s be honest, Henry didn’t have Margaret executed because he wanted to stamp out any Yorkist claimants to the throne. At the time, there had never even been a Queen that had ruled in her own right, nor was it clear that one could do so. Henry had her executed for the simple point of revenge. He was infuriated by the unending barrage of renunciations and challenges to the legitimacy of his religious authority and administration over the Church of England, coming from Margaret’s son, Reginald. But Reginald was safe in Italy, where Henry couldn’t get to him, that is why Margaret was made to suffer.

@GT19525

I never understood why he executed Lady Salisbury. She was too old to have children, and he executed Lord Montagu. Arthur had already died and Geoffrey was released after testifying against Pole & Montagu. He also released Lady Exeter. I can only surmise that it was to spite Reginald, who was writing pamphlets against Henry on the Continent. And the way he did it was like an afterthought. Cromwell was already dead so he can’t be blamed.

See The Last White Rose: dynasty, rebellion and treason - the secret wars against the Tudors, by Desmond Seward. Henry was very insecure about the Yorkist claimants as was his father. It’s papered over in the history books with incessant descriptions of key later wars and persons - like Elizabeth I; and the Catholic Protestant rivalry, but the Yorkist “claimants” were perceived as a real threat.

Henry VIII was a fool and a pig!! he treated people like sh*t and that's what they became. at the time he thought he was doing good, but since when is hypocrisy the greatest good?? &&& hypocrisy is the greatest of all foolishness. in the way that Jesus Christ preached forgiveness, not condemnation and execution, Henry VIII's actions were total blasphemy against Jesus. Jesus Christ never executed one sinner. for kings and queens to execute people in His name was the greatest foolishness and hypocrisy of all!! the hatred and confusion created from King Henry VIII's madness was the foolishness of a cold-blooded giant child possessed by Satan!! he was mentally handicapped and mad!! if not a total fool!! at least a fool or jester has some cleverness. Henry VIII was just plain dumb!! perhaps the dumbest king in the history of mankind!!
