Hello dear viewer! I was going to include screen cap comparisons in this video - however, this year some companies have been using that as an excuse to claim copyright against reviews that they don't like. I didn't want to risk that, but you can already find screen caps of this 4K disc on the internet if you wish. Hopefully this video still helps in some way. Cheers!

The halos around the fluorescent lights are present in the Blu-ray version from 2013. It’s caused by the lenses that were used in the 70s. I have a bunch of that vintage glass and they do create those halos; some people like them. The color push is making them stand out more but I just checked the 2013 Bluray disk and they are indeed there; they’re just less saturated, so the color push is causing them to leap out more. even the flickering and movement of those halos was present on the Blu-ray disc. Pushing the colors really pronounces their presence. I guess it’s a question of taste; the 2013 Blu-ray is beautiful. The new 4K is…interesting.
@ElliotCoen9 ай бұрын
Good points. You’re correct, they are present on the blu-ray and I think they look unnatural there. The haloing effect is caused by the lens but it has been manipulated heavily for home video and for what reason? If you go back to the DVD or even the VHS, you’ll see that the blue ring around each light is barely there. Have a quick look at this from VHS kzfaq.info/get/bejne/apeJhap5vtTOm4E.htmlsi=V_DdBntNlVyQzByx
@InnerCityProjections9 ай бұрын
@@ElliotCoenI’ve gotta agree. The VHS looks very good. Maybe the best. Love the desaturated look. And the grade blend the halo with the florescent. Looks like it’s going to be an expensive year purchasing the redux of the 4K when Warners gets around to it!
@byron198009 ай бұрын
C'mon, guys, what the hell? We're in 2023, how can you compare a VHS tape with a 4k transfer? VHS was the worst possible medium for video. Desaturated colors? Of course, that's technology limitation. Just look at the color of the Coca-Cola ad, in the subway scene; does that look like the actual red color we all know? Not even remotely. The Exorcist has a native 4k resolution, which means that only now we can experience its original image quality. VHS has the lowest resolution possible, it looks terrible by default and I can't believe we are still talking about those transfers made way back in the day.
@InnerCityProjections9 ай бұрын
I saw a 35mm film print of this recently and the “feeling” or “mood” of shadow and desaturation and grain were closer to the way the VHS looks. Similarly, with the good the bad and the ugly, the 35 mm film print had less information then the Blu-ray or the 4K. These days with the technology of Dolby Vision and HDR you have them bringing out details that were purposely lost in projection prints from the original screenings. Sometimes the VHS and its low Fidelity way captures the mood and the feeling of those original 35 mm film prints better than going in and extracting details out of the negative That were never printed in the original versions. With that said, I love the new interpretation on 4K in many ways and I’m not necessarily gonna say that I like the VHS better in its mood. I’m just saying that I do like that mood it’s more of a film noir feeling less information in the shadows. The VHS has that feeling of less information in the shadows into darkness. The 4K is letting us see into the darkness and some scenes and I don’t mind that it’s just a different interpretation.
@byron198009 ай бұрын
@@InnerCityProjections , you know what's the big problem with 35 mm prints, right? We're talking about analog here. You lose detail and image quality with every copy of a 35 mm print. This doesn't happen with a DI nowadays. Again, we are comparing completely different technologies. The biggest issue with home video was that it always lagged behind the "real cinema experience". Only today, home video really closes the gap and we can experience these movies at their best, in terms of quality. Of course, there may be problems here and there with some transfers, but in terms of overall quality I still think there is no comparison with what we had 40 yrs ago.

Saw the restoration in theaters and the opening stated that William Friedkin wanted to push the contrast to make a more "hyper realism" version of the film... definitely different but interesting :)
@esunsalmista7 ай бұрын
I think on this one a little bit of perspective is missing. I've seen the still comparisons only, but based on those it seems that while they did over-saturate/over-contrast a bit leading to some loss of detail (mainly in the background), the blu-ray was itself clearly under-saturated. Setting aside the issue of how the film *should be* experienced which can be subjective, the 4K just clearly looks better. This seems one of those matter-of-preference things. If the added color doesn't diminish the experience for you and you have neither in your collection, the 4K looks better.

You are not alone in your impressions of the 4K transfer. Yours and a few other reviews pointing out the problems of the colour and saturation etc are what prevented me from shelling out for one of the blingy special editions internationally. I went ahead and hopped around the 4K disc and looked at a handful of scenes including the ones you pointed out. I see what you mean, especially with the Subway scene, but didn't find it distracting and probably wouldn't notice if you didn't bring it up. I think overall the film looks the best it ever did. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the de-saturated, almost monochromatic feel of the movie on VHS/DVD but I expect these color pops from 4K. I did watch on an OLED and didn't see any color bleeding. I would still highly recommend picking this up. Never saw the bluray but can't imagine it is better than this.

Just gave this a watch. The 4k transfer was largely inoffensive to me up until the end. I noticed all the anomalies throughout, but could still appreciate the strengths of the added resolution. For me, the exorcism scene is leagues worse than anything else in the transfer visually. Could’ve sworn the whole film had suddenly dropped down to 720p. Really pulled me out of the experience, which is a shame because I’d never seen the film before. Still thought the movie was a masterpiece, but definitely sticking with the older blu-ray. Such an important scene to be the only one that is borderline unwatchable.

I watched it at the movie theater, with the new 4k presentation. Overall, it was an impressive display of power. Sometimes it looks more artificial, with much saturation in colours. The Iraq scene really shines, the hospital scene is more dramatic than ever, but yeah the exorcism has really blurred and grainy moments.

Hi Elliot After your review i went in not expecting much of the new 4K transfer, however I was pleasently surprised. You are correct in that the colour saturation in some scenes is a bit too much, however for the most part i think it was just about ok. Some of the detail in the transfer is superb, especially the outdoor lit scenes, the mercedes driving up to to the house looks superb, and obviously some of the close ups look great. Generally I thought the transfer was better than I expected, the blue hue on the final exorcism scene wasn't that distratcing for me. I think on the next watch I'll just adjust my player to tweak the HDR settings, bring the saturation down a touch, and I think I'll be happy with that then. Cheers Dean

So happy I stuck with my blu ray collectors edition copy and skipped out on this 4K release. Missing the atmos but I’d rather have the picture be more true to heart.
@jesperlundstrom42957 ай бұрын
The difference is that there are stronger colors in 4k and sometimes a little to much of it
@ShanghaiRooster9 ай бұрын
Very disappointing. If there's a schadenfreudic silver lining to this, perhaps the scalpers who were already listing loads of the collectors edition on ebay at grossly inflated prices (sold out pre-order) will be left with them on their hands.

This might be one of those times where I'm glad I'm not a critical viewer and I can just enjoy the movie. I also might be glad that my TV is 1080p and my projector is 720p, so the HDR won't affect it as much

Hi Elliot, I don't have a 4K player so I streamed it from AppleTV+. I have the R1 DVD but hav'nt played it recently, so my memory of the visuals is non-existent. With the 4K I noticed a disturbing artificiality to all the daytime scenes, everything was hyper real. I mention this because you didn't. Warner have been the most consistent home video company, so I suspect the blame lay with William Friedkin (bless him) & perhaps failing eyesight, something I'm aware of myself (time for another checkup?). I'll play my DVD to confirm your comments!
@trevorbartram54738 ай бұрын
I checked the R1 DVD & we were right, the visuals are completely different. The short Georgetown scene sticks out like a sore thumb on the 4K, much less so on the DVD. Unfortunately the DVD is riddled with aliasing artifacts, unusual for Warner, but they didn't have the tools back then to eliminate aliasing. A SuperBit DVD with double the bit rate might have looked better?

@ElliotCoen Hey Elliot, I’m new to your channel. I’d like to thank you for your honest review of this 4K version of Exorcist. I think I’ll stick to the 1997 DVD, and blu-ray with both director’s cut & theatrical versions, that I already own. Hopefully the 60th, or 75th anniversary editions will fix many, or all, of the picture issues. That wouldn’t surprise me as WB seem to consider this movie as a kind of cash cow! I hope so anyway. Keep up the good work Elliot 👍

Honestly, from what I've seen on some 4K releases, it seems that some of these Restorations are being performed on monitors that are simply not calibrated or are calibrated wrong. One of my all-time favorite ghost story movies is the changeling, and the 4K release of that had skin tones that were so red I have to turn down the red Channel significantly to enjoy the film. Everything else about the restoration looks great but the reds are far too red.

Have every version of this film, not interested in picking the 4k, had a feeling it would look over saturated, Blu Ray looks fine, compared to the dvd and it is definitely my go to choice in viewing this great film, plus you did not mention all the very good bonus features that were previously included on the Blu Ray are not ported over for this 4k release, big mistake that was not done

Hi everyone, I have to say that Elliot, is right in his review I've watched the 4K UHD over and over and over again this 4K UHD release comes with it's problems as mentioned in this review... I've watched my 1080p VC-1 Blu-ray today and consider this to be much a better transfer if I'm honest I think the 4K is just an badly upscaled copy of the already remastered 1080p Blu-ray from 2010 true collectors of Blu-ray's and 4K UHD Blu-ray's would be able to EASILY see this I'm mean just look at the burnt in subtitles on the 4K compared to the 1080p they look better in 1080p then 4K UHD!!!!!

I utterly disagree with everything you’ve said about it. I think it’s one of the best recent restorations ever made. Friedkin definitely knew what he was doing, unlike James Cameron with all of his restorations. Maybe you should change your picture settings in order to make it more suitable to the director’s intentions in restoring this. It might be your setting or your device which are making you have this bad experience with it, unlike mine. Watched on my LG OLED and the picture setting was Dolby Vision Filmmaker Movie Mode. If you’re using Vivid or any other mode that might stretch color a out too much, you might want to consider changing it to filmmaker’s.

Warners let me down massively with Enter The Dragon last month so I'm not surprised. The Criterion bluray looks better than their 4K. Not on. For a company who have been synonymous with preservation and in-house restorations this lack of care recently (see also: US editions dropping all extras) is worrying. Warner Archive continue unabaited but they're a different division.
@jwtrailers53179 ай бұрын
The bigger studios seem to have a track record of neglecting the quality of these 4K titles. Seems like it's down to the boutique labels to carry the torch, in terms of preserving films in their original look.

Not everything looks good in 4K and I've seen inconsistentcy in countless older films. I have to be a huge fan of the film or randomly catch a good sale when it comes to 4K. Black Friday deals had a bunch of 4K cheaper than the BD. BD is good enough for me. I'm not a 4K snob

I'm about to pick up The Psycho Collection by Arrow at HMV and guess what NOT the 4K version the 1080p version! I'm so so so tired of 4K UHD and the issues they come with especially as the disc are embedded with HDR I just like to upscale 4K scan 1080p discs. 4K UHD is becoming a broken format these days plus your paying and extra £16 over the standard Blu-ray these days look at the price of the up coming Prey 4K compared to the Blu-ray £26.99 for the 4K and £15.99 for the Blu-ray that's over a £10 saving I can get a box of 18x Bud Light's at Tesco with that saving 😂

@@simonfilmfan4899 You see that's why 4K is hit or miss these day's I blame all this HDR s@%t 4K UHD Blu-ray's have to come embedded with I think ALL 4K UHD'S should COME with the normal 4K UHD disc then a normal 4K UHD disc without HDR embedded I've owned so many 4K UHD's nothing but issues. Glad I'm ordering the Blu-ray collection of Psycho and not the 4K. The Blu-ray's are already 4K scans upscaled in a 4K player BANG your done! 👍🏻 I've tried to love UHD but I don't know anymore after The Exorcist UHD 🤔 I think they rushed the UHD of The Exorcist in order for it to be available before the release of The Exorcist Believer here in the UK on the 6th of October

Well I must say I totally disagree with your assessment. I have had in fact all versions of this movie, including projector tapes from the 70's and even the remastered versions. And I prefer the new look as it adds better color Palat to the movie. The colors did not bleed on my Sony TV or my Benq projector, it was bright but not oversaturated. Check your Video settings or have it properly calibrated. The inconsistency on the image is directly related to the source and it has always been there. I had seen this movie in the 1970's when you were probably not even born yet!!!

Classic movie. It's such a shame they don't make movies like this no more, especially nowadays where the majority of movies are made for TV streaming platforms. It's mostly all CGI with out-the-focus backgrounds and blurry edges. As soon as I identify it, I'm immediately aware the actors are standing in front of a green screen, which obviously distances me from the movie! So sad the Golden era of movie making has long gone. ☹ Back in the days before CGI directors used to ask themselves... "what scenes 'can' we shoot but nowadays it's... "what scenes 'shall' we shoot" it's a totally different way of thinking! No wonder action scenes nowadays are boring touching on ridiculous.
