The expandable baton is one of the most useless tools regularly carried by police. It has absolutely no track record of desirable results and is responsible for some of the worst cases of police brutality ever.
I do not understand why this thing still exists.
This is just a short playlist of some baton fails that illustrate some of the points in this video. Do you know of many... or any... instances of the baton actually working as intended?

The Taser has definitely replaced the baton and Pepper spray as the first less lethal option on an officer's belt. I do not know of any incidents when the baton was effective BUT with today's antitrust of the police, they need to have as many less lethal options on their belt as possible before lethal force

Get out of here dude, if we lose our batons we'll lose the most important tool on our belt. How am I supposed to scratch my back, with body armor on, without a baton 😂 UPDATE: I finally found another good use for a baton. A bunch of kids had a fire going in a local park, they left without snuffing the fire out. So I had to use my baton to break up the coals and douse it with water. I'm pretty much a fire fighter now. I just made a 2k mile road trip each way for the holidays. I didn't carry since I was going through some restrictive liberal states, but I did have a 24" collapsible baton on me when walking the dogs or going out to the car. I don’t have 8 years of police experience, but I do have 28 years of police experience. I was hired when they did not issue mace or tasers. We had a baton and a pistol (and yes a revolver is a pistol). So I learned to fight with a baton on the streets. I have ended many fights with one strike to the leg and arm for the most part. But I practice a lot with a straight baton. The side handle baton hit hard but rotates down in the hand as it spins. A straight baton is more precise. Most people have played tennis, ping pong, badminton etc and know they can hit a small moving target with a straight handle “baton”. There is no nice way to hit them so hit like you are breaking furniture and one hit will likely end the fight. The exception being someone on drugs. But a baton can break them down mechanically but hitting joints if it gets that bad. Using mace causes you to have to deal with biohazard as the suspect starts issuing spit and snot in good quantities and you still have to handle them to cuff. Most rookies I trained were like you until they saw a baton work. I carried a collapsible baton when I worked undercover. But I have not hit anyone with one so I’ll not comment on that. Tasers , batons and hand strikes- the suspect will sometimes be injured when you drop them to the ground and hit the concrete or something hard. So, I love you but you are wrong .

Seeing how much modern officers lack physical skills, and rely on their mace and tazer, it's probably for the best they don't have them anymore. Also female officers would be useless with them and you know it.

@@joshuaslate3719 The term pistol and handgun are interchangeable. That's why there's such a term as a semi auto pistol, which contrasts from a revolver or single shot pistol. And by your definition, any weapon with a fixed chamber would be a pistol, regardless of anything else. I know, you're going to complain about straw man argument with the last bit, but that's just to prove a point about the stupidity of this. A revolver is a pistol in the same way a Glock 19 is a pistol, they may function differently than each other, but they both fall under the pistol, or handgun definition. Just like how a rifle and a shotgun are exceptionally different, but both fall under the definition of a long gun.

No weapon is perfect, neither is it useless. Undercover carry them in the UK, I'm not sure whether the police still use batons here since pepper spray become prevalent. I've seen plenty videos of police over here getting into sticky situations with pepper spray precisely because most combat situations arise out of drug misuse, most crooks are sensible and don't want the huge hike in prison time cos they beat a copper to get away only to get caught eventually. I like these videos but I think there's some level of the algorithm making a more considered opinion less appealing to viewers. Nuance isn't conducive to good engagement!

Correct me if I'm wrong but you're referring to a solid baton rather than extendable right? Well he's talking specifically about extendable, and the reason these don't tend to work well is because they take longer to deploy and don't hit quite as hard. I can attest to that latter point since I have been hit with them while stone cold sober, and when the adrenaline is rushing, you don't feel a thing from those. Therefore, you can't rely on the normal hits to disable the opponent, and have to escalate to more dangerous targets, like the head or neck. This is where it leaves the legal part of the diagram and 9 times out of 10 heads over to the effective but not legal portion A solid baton is a fine weapon for a police officer like you said, but ultimately that's not what he's talking about

If the user had wanted to he could have seriously damage the attacker’s elbows; and knees; or strike the attacker very hard in the neck; and most likely killing him! The ASP baton is no toy! I purchased a collapsible ASP baton earlier this month online; I purchased one of those collapsible ASP batons after 9/11 ; and I would practice swinging it; and hitting pieces of wood until it finally broke. But that’s exactly the point, it can definitely kill but if you’re a cop and in a deadly force encounter, you should go for your gun. The thing about being an LEO is that policy will dictate where and when you can hit with a baton. That’s usually it’s when a subject is assault is combative. And you can only hit primary and secondary zones. Primary being center mass or the meaty parts of the arms and legs; quads, hamstrings, calves, biceps, and triceps. Secondary being the bones parts of the arms and legs; knees, elbow, wrists, and shoulders but must be justified in the use of force spectrum. The head, neck, spine, groin and chest are completely off limits unless you’re involved in a deadly force encounter. But if an assaultive subject escalates to deadly force by pulling a knife or a gun out, you can’t rely on the baton to end the threat. You will most likely be going for your gun too. If the subject is assaultive, by following policy and only targeting the authorized primary locations, your strikes may be ineffective. If you strike secondary zones you will be more effective and possibly legal but risk hitting the red zones and using deadly force when it’s not needed and getting fired/arrested after the fact. If the baton is all you have, you are most likely in SOL. Now imagine the subject manages to grab it and take it from you and use it against you, since they are untrained and not subjected to rules, they will strike your head, neck, or ribs and put you into a deadly force encounter. In that case you better have a gun.

It seems crazy to me that using something as low key as a Baton for a legit, true self defense situation could be considered legal. If we are allowed to use something as straight up lethal as a gun for self defense, then why on earth would a Baton not be considered so? If someone is straight up attacking or robbing you, you should be allowed to use whatever the hell is nearby to defend yourself. It's either you or them in that situation. Sometimes the law is completely illogical I swear...

@Apple Support For Police a gun should be the very last thing they use to gain compliance. For a regular person a gun should also be the last thing on your list of priorities. Being a gun carrying advocate doesn't mean that he believes its always ok to shoot someone to death, and even if he believes that at the very least a gun is way more effective than a baton. Police carry a gun because they are tasked with entering a dangerous situation. The gun is a last resort and should be treated as such. Yes, hitting someone on the head with a baton will make them bleed out and probably die and shooting someone will probably do the same thing, but if that's the case then why carry the baton if it's just going to do the guns job less effectively and safely for the person who carries it. The issue he points is that the use cases of a baton where they are effective aren't typically legal, and the times where its legal to use the baton don't gain compliance. However, this idea may be biased given that whenever a baton is used unlawfully, videos of that scenario are sent online and get views, which would never be the case with the times batons were used legally. Besides the alternatives Hard2Hurt recommends are tactical whips, which he fully acknowledges would probably not be a good, justifiable idea for a citizen, let alone a police officer lol. But at least they were whipped into compliance instead of having their heads bleeding out.

the point is, in a fight a baton doesnt really hurt and doesnt make people comply, unless you hit them in the head, but if you hit someone in the head with a baton it might kill them, for a cop i dont need to explain why is dumb to use a Non-lethal weapon that only makes effect if you use lethal force with it, for a untrained civilian, using a baton most likely you will lose the baton an then get hit by it, as a trained civilian, if you have a little bit of racionality and emotion, you know that killing someone is not a good thing to do and will change your life forever so probably its not how you're gonna handle every situation.

@Legendary Force Clearly you are not a LEO. What he failed to demonstrate in the video is that even striking with the baton is ineffective. The only part on the baton worth landing a strike with is the threaded tip. When you are fighting and have adrenaline pumping, aiming that threaded tip where you want it to go on a person that is attacking you and moving is near impossible. I've seen them used in person three times and none of the times were they effective. The only time they are worth a shit is if you hit a bony (illegal) area with the threaded tip. The only "legal" areas to hit a human with a baton in a law enforcement capacity are meaty areas of the body. If you hit bony areas and break them, now you have to explain why you hit a bony area (probably because the suspect was moving) to avoid losing your job or obtaining charges. Personally, my baton has stayed in it's holster (I'm required to have it) since I've been doing my job. I'd rather use my hands and OC spray.

No, defence is the shields (or body armour for example) primary purpose to protect against incoming attacks. The sword or mace(in this case baton because let's face it baton and mace are just fancy words for fancy clubs) are for offence delivering damage to incapacitate or kill an enemy. Yes either or can be used for their oppisite intentions from which they were intended. but it's the primary purpose either was made for that should classify it as either a defencive tool or an offencive tool after all that is what it will be best at. Clubs, guns ,tazers swords, knifes, pepper spray these are all personal offence tool or "weapons". Understand Offence or the threat of it is also in its self a form of defence because it can discourage potential assailants from attempting to attack. And when attacked it may be nessasarry to meet the incoming attack and retaliate to it in order to insure your continuing personal safety which is what everyone is really talking about when they talk about "self defence" really it's a conversation about "personal safety" and what levels of "offencive measures" and "defence messures" are warranted to maintain it.

After years of live sparring with sticks and being around high level artists, I can say with 100% confidence that a well trained Martial Artist is extremely dangerous in a self-defense scenario with a Baton. It took me years to even score a significant hit on a well practiced person. I mean, common. You almost knocked out your buddies teeth by merely being careless. In your effective way possible. A common person is going to be way more of both of those if using a gun, over a baton, bar none. In your scenario, if an experienced martial artist were to use said baton, in a court of law that might be misconstrued as being more assault with intent to kill than self defense, which makes a huge difference. It's viewed as, well if you hit this person here in X place or you hit them X amount of times then you intended on hurting that subject rather than just defending yourself. If you shoot a subject in the chest twice while he's coming at you, then at least here in the state of texas, that's known as standing your ground. Not to mention that if you hurt someone, even someone that attacked you, that person can come back and sue the shit out of you. Self defense is about way more than just being good at fighting. It's about knowing what to do and what not to do in a given situation, and knowing how the laws in your state work.

I carried one of those as an MP in the early 2000's. The only time I had to use it was when I had a really drunk guy being belligerent and trying to take my sidearm out of my holster while I was trying to detain him. It was a retention holster, so the chances of a guy that inebriated actually getting the firearm free were pretty low, but I wasn't willing to take the chance. He got a fractured elbow. I honestly missed my mark... I was aiming for his upper arm, but he flinched when he saw it coming and pulled his arm up, so he got a trip to the hospital before he was taken to the base detention facility until his 1SG could come get him. I got recommended for an award for taking a guy off the road that was well past 2x the legal limit for drunk driving, and he got his arm in a sling for a while and a suspended license. For what it's worth, I warned him, and then I only swung once. I can see how these things could easily be overused in a stressful situation, but when used with restraint they can be really effective at stopping inappropriate behavior.

Good reply. But I have to ask you honestly, as you are the professional in confrontations by likely sheer number of experience. _If_ a baton is weapon where it is clearly not for self defensive, and is dangerously offensive on many levels from legality, concealment, and assault charge more likely because one is using said offensive weapon.... Does this not make it the ultimate deterant? Did you have to draw it ever, or had you felt it did have some deterant factor for compliance? I realize of course one should not carry anything they are not willing to use, and applied to carrying an offensive weapon, that is an issue. But still, isn't there a 'fear of the bâton' that it does work for a deterant of action? If you had to reach for a weapon, (assuming the other is unarmed) would it not be better to shift policing away from deadly force of a gun to choosing an effective offensive weapon? ('Charline horses', break a hand finger, or forearm.) Would this not be better than straight to the Colt, for death avoidance?

British Police where they don't carry guns and there isn't as much 'gun culture' or gun violent clashes with police, seem to use it as a deterrent. Totally different situation of course, I am just a little surprised that it isn't seen as more of a deterrent. So in your opinion should officers or all officers be given them? What _is_ the point then, in the training/carry ?

Reality check: You're not going to worry about the law while someone is stabbing you. That's just not going to happen. The wrestler Bruiser Brody and UFC fighter Maiquel Falcao were both stabbed to death, even though they had exceptional fighting ability, and that's because there's no martial art that offers solid, reliable knife defense. I don't care what martial art you do, I don't care if you're a black belt or not, if you're up against a knife, you are at a severe disadvantage. Even the U.S. military teach you to run away from a knife attacker. A flashlight and baton combo are most definitely reliable tools for self-protection if a gun isn't an option.

Great points! Here are couple of things to consider as well. There are times when a baton is the *best* choice: 1.) when your survival is seriously threatened and you don't have or are not authorized to have a gun. 2.) when your survival is seriously threatened and you don't stand a chance without some kind of weapon. 3.) when your survival is seriously threatened and you really, really want to avoid killing someone. (ie: you have a gun but you can survive this situation without it, or the attacker is someone you know and care about, etc, etc). NOTE: that's right, a baton can *still be deadly*. My main point here is that *most times* it's way less lethal than a gun -- and so it can be a best choice in literally 100s of scenarios if you think about it. Thaks for the video.

I can see a number of pros to using this weapon, even though I never have myself: -Easily carried, portable, light -Threatening sound and movement when deployed. Sometimes that's enough to deter an attacker. -Has a nasty reputation. Yeah, it can be used to really wreck someone. It can be scary. Even if technically proven a bad weapon. -Longer range than a knife and less risk of lethal injury on the target. -As other have stated, if aimed properly it can be an ideal disarming weapon. If it breaks a wrist it may even disable a threat completely, giving you time to call 911 or run away. -If someone is charging at you, a sidestep followed by a sharp blow to the leg can cripple your attacker, making them regret their choices, without risk of lethal injury. -Other uses aside from as a weapon. Can break glass or snap a tree branch. -Can fend off a dog or wild animal. Getting a bladed weapon stuck in one might result in you getting bit, which is really bad if they are rabid. -Probably faster to deploy than pepperspray or a tazer, though either have their advantages over a baton. -Can potentially knock out an opponent, though IRL its not like in movies and may result in severe permanent injury. Though that is acceptable in some mugging or house defense scenarios. Probably not something to use against a simply aggressive/unruly/drunk person and I agree on the bit about cops abusing it. I can seriously f**k someone up, send people to the hospital and incur lawsuits, whereas mace/tazers won't. But against an _armed_ opponent it seems like a weapon of choice. Fast, threatening, effective, reaching, disabling and disarming.

like i say, half of self defense is presentation, if you can present yourself in a way that shows potential aggressors that you aren't someone to fuck around with, it will dissuade any assaults/muggings. whipping out a baton is one such way of doing that by showing you have a weapon and are willing to use it, but avoiding the potential pitfalls that pulling a gun might have (for example if you are in a crowded situation where bringing a gun into that situation could lead to collateral damage, or might not actually be allowed either socially or legally)

Wether or not it's good for self defense depends on what you're fighting. A human may take it from you but batons work great for fending off aggressive dogs. Usually all you have to do is pull it out and yell "hey" while waving it around, and an aggressive dog will back off. It's easier to wield one handed than a bat and safer than a gun in a residential neighborhood. You can swing it easy while walking or riding a bike and it's easy to conceal on a bike frame.

Should stick to their little dojo sparing and point system competition fighting with their rules and legalized fighting with a ring and referee and crowds to cheer and boo them instead of making fake claims about weapons developed for self defense and has been used for decades by police and military. Stupid to even make such a claim. Especially when they are challenging people to call them out on it I did that and so many actual police officers, security guards, military and self defense martial artist have all throughout the comment section complete bull shitters. They should try underground bare knuckle like I've done it's barely any rules and it's illegal see if they last then, Soon learn which martial arts and which self defense techniques and weapons works then. Or go train to with military or police I had police and army cadets training with me in both my Jeet kune do and krav maga dojos because those are effective martial arts. all these MMA fighters forget Bruce Lee created the first MMA fighting style. Also karate, wing Chun, Kung Fu and alot of traditional martial arts are literally copied from to create their modern Martial arts.

I was trained in straight baton by a fellow named Jan Kreavelt (sp?). He was the chief training instructor at the Aylmer police college. Jan was responsible for Toronto police giving up the tonfa in favor of the straight baton. With proper training a straight baton is a very effective "weapon". If I'm pushed into a position where I need to resort to using this weapon I will gladly use it to the best of my ability and face whatever legal reprocusions come my way. I was very proficient with it way back in the day.. I'm old now so I'm slower 😑 Now I prefer to keep the bad guys at a further distance.. Aerosols are my new favorite.

The crossed arms grab with the baton behind the achilles heel is a great way to get compliance. I totally agree everything u say about the baton, rarely works as intended… it works a little as a intimidating method, but quickly becomes a kind of clumsy liability once a suspect commits to fighting u… Ive always wondered why its never been combined with something like a stungun at the end tip

Although not used as a weapon in this case, the baton has successfully been used countless times by officers and civilians alike to bust out car windows saving trapped or unconscious victims. Not to mention the baton's use of "extracting" non-compliant suspects from their cars. I myself have used a baton to successfully defend against wild dogs attacking me while trail running. You wont see me giving mine up any time soon.

As a 32 year cop (20 on SWAT & as the department DT Instructor) I have to say that it's a training issue. A suspect can pose one of 5 levels and you can only use the baton on someone that is level #4. First level is Cooperative (no force is allowed at all) #2 is Passive Resistor #3 is Active Resistor #4 is Combative/Assaultive #5 is a Deadly Threat Next problem is that baton companies want you to use the baton on "Green" zones (which happen to be areas heavily muscled such as the "Buttocks") which cause pain but really dont stop a serious threat. Red zones such as the Head or Spine can cause serious injury or death should only be struck when the suspect poses a Deadly Threat (In which case you shouldn't be even trying to use your baton unless it's the only thing you have). I teach the baton as a Long Range Weapon, and should be used against the "Closest Target" which is usually the Suspects lead leg or fist. You smack his knee or hand and it almost ALWAYS works. But those are usually "Yellow" targets and can cause injury (broken bones in the hand etc). I've had to use the baton many times and it never failed me. I can say that several officers.have complained to me.thst the baton doesn't work and that they wont use it because it's ineffective. I then say "Oh Yeah? Let me hit you with one shot". No one has ever taken me up on it. Knowledge and skill is power.

If you look at historical weapons, almost every melee weapon is characterised as basically being a kin to a big stick; usually pointy at the end, but not always (maces, quarterstaffs). A stick can be used to deflect incoming strikes, much better than using your hands if defending against other melee weapons, and it also provides a reach advantage compared to fists. A baton seems a pretty reasonable extension of ones abilities, a power multiplier.
@crackerjackmattmilsim3052

I was thinking the same. Force multiplier. Plus it technically isn’t lethal compared to a gun. Is it as effective as a gun? No.
@skylark7921
@skylark7921 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. The whole point of melee weapons is to enhance what you already have. Yeah, you can lock someone without a baton, if you know the technique. Add a baton and you’re now twice as capable of disabling the threat. If using a non lethal melee weapon doesn’t up your game, you’re shit at martial arts to begin with.

Brandon most common was probably a quarter staff, spear, or axe. Def spear was very common. Maces not so much since their greatest use was against full plate (typical fantasy knight armor), and a commoner wasn’t likely to come up against a warrior who could afford full plate. As for swords, well crafted ones, such as the Norse Ulfbert, were indeed very pricy, but I believe you could get a kind of shitty one for a decent price. Not everyone walked around with swords, but they were easily one of the most popular weapons for self defense - if you were going to be traveling or something, you might bring a sword with for protection.

Arguing with you: 1) One of the best ways to take someone out of the fight is blunt force trauma to the head. (Matt Thornton: Straight Blast Gym, possibly misquoted) 2) If a guy has a knife, a stick is a great way to keep the distance and knock it from his hands.. you don't need to be trained in Kali to do this..it's natural 3) Defending yourself with a stick is rather Milquetoast for a judge/Jury.. They see HORRIBLE things in court.. and a few bruises on an illegal attacker is sort of...meh..to a judge. 4) Context and cameras.. If you're lawful, it will show. 5) Better to survive and go to court, than to think "I wish I'd had anything in my hands at all) while you bleed out 6) Knives are nasty. Chains are the tools of criminals. (see 3 above) Thanks tho. We disagree. Wish you the best.

Chains ? Im a complete novice in a fight situation but I think a baton would be advantageous over a chain because of the quicker recovery reaction 2nd and 3rd striking ability. Chain having a longer reach than baton but longer reactive 2nd strike ability?

@sophisticated B Police don't even know how to "get hands on". I've seen footage of cops getting easily overpowered by assailants in physical confrontations and it's pathetic to watch. The fact is that the training budget can not cover much of the training in intense and effective hand to hand techniques that are necessary and that cops should be taught. I even heard that the Gracie family has offered free training to certain police departments in order to assist with this lack of available hand to hand training.

My first thought was…. This guy’s never been in a real street fight… When he doesn’t have a little orange button to press for help that brings 30 or 40 armed cops to his defense in less that 30 seconds. 😂 So yeah ok… Ya got me. I carry one while I’m walking alone at night. I also take it with me when I’m walking with my son who’s autistic. I do this only if we are walking at a state park which sometimes can be a hang out for gang bangers but also others looking to rob or beat people. I cannot carry a gun,a knife wouldn’t be as effective especially if there are two or 3 attackers or they have knives themselves. If I’m in a situation I can handle without using it ? Terrific ! Someone has a gun, I’m not pulling out my stick. I don’t think you give people enough credit to use common sense. If my life or my sons is threatened and I have a self defense stick ?? I’m using it. I been in many fights. In the street…. For us civilians, It’s about winning as quickly as possible. I know when that has to happen and when it doesn’t. Btw this is also a great weapon to use against a vicious dog trying to attack. I don’t know where you were a cop…. Mayberry ?
