The wrench flying away thing is generally looked on as the biggest physics mistake in the series...the result of some kind of miscommunication between the VFX department and the director (or something of that nature). In acknowledgement of the screw up, the wrench appears in every season of the show.
@mufana1
@mufana1 2 жыл бұрын
In S2 there´s another big one... From all the reactions and comments sections i´ve seen, the wrench one flys over most people heads, while the one from S2 is mentioned a lot more, although you could classify it as more of an exageration instead of a mistake. But yeah, the Knight would have to be under thrust for the sudden departure of the wrench to happen, but if that was the case Holden and Amos definitely wouldn´t be chilling on the outside of the Knight. I can´t remember the wrench scene in detail, but couldn´t they cut just that bit out without messing up that sequence?
@alcor4670

It's possible that the Knight was spinning. But then again objects inside the skiff would've settled at odd places.

An object in motion stays in motion until an opposing force acts upon it, the knight didn't make a braking burn and was still traveling at speed, so yes the spanner would fly away. How Holden stayed on while kicking the antenna is the bigger question.
@RocketToTheMoose

@@johnmoore-fm9db the wrench was still in motion and at speed as well. Unless the night was burning at that moment the wrench would have just stayed put. You need acceleration for gravity, not speed.

"Stick a pin in it." When you don't get the point of something, just "stick a pin in it." They will come back to it later, and you will see how it fits. While Alex was hypoxic, he was mumbling an argument with someone about making one more trip before coming home. And he's been keeping a photograph of a woman and child. Amos was talking about killing Holden, yet had zero animosity about it. And he couldn't decide whether or not to kill Holden, except Naomi wouldn't like it. Amos glances toward Naomi often. The punk water thief mentioned that the Loca Griegas had left Ceres, giving small fry like him the opportunity to horn in on the local crime. Also, that bit between Havelock and Gia had some information you'll see later. Pay attention to bits of information like that. The show isn't really "slow" when you realize that these early episodes are jam-packed with plot information that will be used later.

The key is that Amos doesn't care one way or the other about killing a person unless they are a threat. He relies on Naomi to provide a moral compass for him. And actually, Amos isn't "happy" to kill Holden. Notice that he asks Naomi if he ought to, because he recognizes that Holden's actions present a threat, however, it is not a direct threat to him, and so he asks Naomi to weigh in. Amos isn't unhappy that she tells him not to kill Holden. He just accepts her input as valid and forgets about shooting Holden.

You did far better than most first-time viewers I've seen so you'll be fine in a few episodes. You are asking good questions... As far as the scarring on the back of Miller's neck - technically all belters should look like the prisoner that Avaserala was interrogating, but that's really difficult to accomplish from a casting standpoint, so they came up with the idea of the "bone density juice" that many Belters take as a way to explain why they all weren't long and thin - but they quickly realized that even that wasn't necessary as long as they gave Belters other distinctive features like tattoos to distinguish them from Inners.

Each season has a distinct theme according to the show runners. Season 1 is basically a detective show with a mystery that is investigated. I really like the sci-fi neo noir of season 1. A subtle thing the show did by destroying The Canterbury was removing "plot armor" from the cast. They built up all those characters on the crew, then killed them. Now, in the back of your brain, dangerous situations have more concrete consequences. The threats are more real. Our plucky heroes may not make it out safely at the last second. 😲

Glad you're sticking with it, it's well worth the time investment. This show has some of the best written strong female characters in recent years. I mean every character is very well rounded, but they really did a great job of demonstrating the various ways a character can be strong. With regards to how the story is being told, it will vary from season to season. Because it's based on books, some questions won't be answered for a couple of seasons. The first book is a noir detective story in space, so the mystery of Julie Mao plays the central role. It will hook you, and when it does, be prepared.

The wrench flying away was a mistake. That would have worked if the ship was under thrust, but you wouldn't be thrusting while working outside the ship. They didn't catch the mistake untill they were too far into post production of the ep so they left it in. Because of this, the FX team did a crash course in physics and orbital mechanics. They got so good at it that they would sometimes correct the writers later I n the series. Because they left the mistake in, the wrench makes an appearance once each season as both an Easter egg and a reminder.

Our current knowledge about Ceres is that it is the largest object within the asteroid belt, and that its surface is covered with ice, and not just a dusting of it, but a very thick covering. That rabble-rouser on Ceres, speaking with his Belter Creole accent, mentions that Earth and Mars stripped all of that ice from Ceres. It is not explained why they did so, but one of the consequences is that the people who setttled on Ceres then had to acquire ice from other sources and live under water rationing even in the best of times.

The first couple episodes, I had so many questions, and I just wanted multiple episodes of pure worldbuilding and exposition to let me know everything about everything before the plot began. But having watched the whole series, and really just after the first season, I was able to look back at the beginning and understand why they did it this way, and I appreciate it much more how they gave answers more slowly. The show does a lot of cliffhangers and it's much more of a scifi thriller than a pure scifi show. But The Expanse does reward you for sticking with it, and letting things get revealed over time. It also rewards you if you pay very careful attention to the little clues it does give you bit by bit early on. The payoffs are incredible.

Oh, you're gripped. Your head is filling with theories and what ifs. You need to know what happens next. This show will keep doing that to you. Keep asking all these questions. It is fun to see your questions...especially since Marie and I were asking the SAME questions...and we now KNOW everything. Love it. Marie's favourite character is Naomi (especially at this point in the show). My favourite character is James Holden. Yes, I know...he's emotional, but I love his passion. The other surviving crew members of The Canterbery, Amos, Shed and Alex. We really love their dynamic. You will learn more about them, don't worry. BIG question, who are the bad guys? The Martians,? The Belters,? Earthers? Who made the stealth tech and for what purpose? Chrisjen Avasarala and Sadavir Errinwright are movers and shakers in the United Nations government of Earth. It is interesting to see what each of them is willing to do...for Earth. The Belters plight...they live on the brink of disaster. Like you said, one shipment late...riots, two shipments lates death. A perilous situation to be in. Learning more of the Belter psyche and why they do what they do. Detective Miller seems to be compitent, but also a little shady. Love how Thomas Jane plays this character. I do hope that you continue to watch this show. It keeps getting getting better, episode by episode and even more so, season by season. AND, yes, space is a trecherous environment...always close to killing humanity. The debri from the Scopuli...made a mess of the little craft that they were on. Unlike in Star Trek...there are no ray shields. It just takes a stray object going fast...to mess up your day. The Donneger is the Flagship of the MCRN (Mars Congressional Republic Navy). Cannot wait to see your reaction with next week's episode. Ugh. Wish these reactions were closer together. You are killing us. JK We are having a LOT of fun watching your reactions. We have seen SO many reactions of this show...and almost everyone of them is near the same. Asking the same questions. BTW, this is the show that we've gathered a lot of friends from. It has almost a cult following on social media. In fact, the show was saved and bought by Amazon BECAUSE of the love so MANY loyal fans...that even Jeff Bezos became a fan...and brought is back from being cancelled by SyFi Network. So, the writiers, the production staff, the directors, cast and crew became very socially connected with the fans. Once you get far enough...there are lots of Official Podcasts done by one of the authors and one of the cast. It is amazing how much this show is loved by pretty much everyone. Until your next drop...we hope that you have a WONDERFUL day.

Everything you said in your introduction makes me so excited for your journey! This show, as I'm sure you've read "does not hold your hand", and your attempts at understanding what's going to happen will always be obliterated. Lol You are exactly where every one else is at this point. And everyone loves the voyage in the end!

Hang in there! I stopped after this episode because I wasn't following it and there didn't seem to be any characters for me to like. I tried again when Amazon picked up the show for a 4th season and I think it was the 4th episode that I got on board. The wrench was a goof by the team as yeah, it wouldn't fly out of his hand unless something knocked it out. They've acknowledged that. Amos is really an interesting character and Jim is a passionate kinda guy. Naomi is pretty fun too. The Donnanger is a big ship. All the ships are built like office buildings because of thrust gravity.

Rewatching the first season for me is a mixed bag. I love the show but I see what a slow burn it was. Every episode gets better and every season gets better. This is a book series that was such a joy to see come to the small screen.

Amos is a self-aware sociopath. He knows he doesn't have the tools to make right/wrong decisions (the reasons are explained later in the show) and he uses Naomi's sense of right and wrong as a touchstone. He doesn't like or dislike Holden (or anyone),

For sure you have to consider the start of the show an investment. That said on a re-watch it is very high quality even in the early episodes.

This is what this series does better then any sci-fi work out there: Space/Physics itself is a character, not only it has such a big effect on the Belter's culture but its gonna effect so much of the plot and story. Love this show

The way I look at the Miller/ Vargas situation -- and I know I'm being overly generous here -- is that Vargas isn't actually paying Miller to not follow regulations, he's paying to not have to go through an official inspection. As long as he meets minimal safety requirements he can continue to be a slumlord, but when he doesn't do maintenance at all he needs a reminder that by going outside the law (paying bribes) Miller has to also (throwing him in an airlock). The alternative is that he can do business legally and an inspector can test the ENTIRE property.

Julie is not missing, at least not when the request to find her was made. As far as the security on Ceres is concerned she is just going about her business, which is why Miller referred to the request to find and send her back to Earth as a ‘kidnap job’.

13:37 They look like they are still but there is no friction in space thus an object in motion will forever be in motion in it's last direction. They are moving. Let go of the tool and it flies away.

You will get the best space battles of any show. And emotional moments. Nobody is who they seem to be here, it’s intentional that no character is easy to read at first. The expanse is also known as Cliffhanger: the series, just give it time.

have to agree when i first watched this show as it aired i missed a fair bit of info and found it slow but when i got to the end of season 3 the first thing i did was go back and absorb as much as i could from the start. the story truly gets better and better, consider the slow start the beginning of a crescendo that ultimately pays off. just gotta stick with it, it may be slow to hook you but when it does you'll likely love it.

When watching this show, you have to remember that it is based in real science. So, with the outer door not working, the only way to get in and out would be to lose all the oxygen in the ship. And the ship doesn't have unlimited oxygen to open and close and open and close the doors.
