Yeah, basically Miller shot him because that guy was convincing Fred and Holden. He shot him because he *was* genuine, and sooner or later he'd talk then into doing more horror for "the greater good". Fred and Holden were starting to wonder if the cost was worth it. They were this close to dancing with the devil. Miller decided to save their souls for them.
@Norbert_Sattler
@Norbert_Sattler 4 жыл бұрын
I agree that Miller thought that way, but there was no way Johnson - who was still haunted by the lives he took - and Holden - who's basically the most morally upstanding person in the entire show - were actually going to be swayed. They would only have kept Dresden alive because they were hoping he might create an antidote or at the very least give them full access to all data so someone else could create an antidote. With Dresden dead they now have to hack the data, at the risk of the data being damaged or outright destroyed, greatly reducing their chance to find a cure or a defense against the protomolecule.

I'm one of the minority that agrees with Miller. Dresden was incredibly dangerous. Amoral enough to do that experiment and smart enough to convince people to back him. And also smart enough to conduct his experiment on Belters. Not because he himself was racist but because he knew how little Earth and Mars would care about them.

Not only that you can see the attack team soaking in what Dresdon was telling them. Miller you can see already distraught having just left eros fresh in his memory is looking at them all thinking "how can you listen to this?" He had to do something then or it would be another eros. He knew that was the result and would not let it happen.

First off can we appreciate the level of details on this show? Close range fights are settled with gatling guns which is nothing more than super heated bullets ripping through metal, the bullet leaves a wake of "fire residue" floating in zero G to showcase the path of the bullet, when the Roci engages its engine to create inertia, the embers fall to the ground lifelessly. As to answer your question Carly, Miller stated they needed the scientist to calm the trigger happy Belters who just needed an excuse to shoot. He also didn't know the extent of the evil research being done in the station. Miller at heart is an incredible cynic, his childhood experience has shown that ultimately people look out for number one above all else. This is why he thinks Anderson Dawes is a phony using others to get more power, he cannot conceive of this "greater good" concept that he keeps preaching about other Belters. So listening to Dresden (the head scientist), he thinks that they purposely sacrificed millions of Belters just to "see what happens" with an alien virus. Then the more he listened the more he started to make sense. If a much more advanced alien species really did send the protomolecule to fk with humanity, then they needed to be ready for the day they'd pay a visit. They realized the tech disparity was simply just too great and they needed to further their research no matter the cost. By his logic, what is a few million Belters when it's to save the multiple billions of humans in our solar system? It's sick but logical. When Fred Johnson saw the argument and made a decision to use Dresden (as a bargaining chip for the Belter cause), Miller shot Dresden. Not because he felt Dresden lied, but rather he the ultimate cynic was almost sold on this sacrifice. If he could see Dresden's side, then everyone else (Earth,Mars,Belt) would all be ready to forgive and forget. This dude who killed millions of his kin was going to walk away like it was nothing, what's worse, he knew that if he let Dresden walk out of here, that he'd never see him or get close to him again. So that's when he decided to be judge, jury and executioner and make him pay for Belter lives. The end did not justify the means, someone had to pay and he made sure Dresden paid in full.

Mars was first colonized by the best and brightest of earth. As a result, they are a diverse people with different languages, races, and accents. And they are technologically advance, patriotic, and disciplined. There are multiple cities there, all under ground or under domes. In the books it turns out there's a large contingent that emigrated to Mars from Asian countries and from Texas. Hence, Alex's Texas drawl and taste in music. In the books, Bobbie Draper is Samoan. As is the actress Frankie Adams that plays Bobbie (Samoa-New Zealand). If you dig into it, the actors are very diverse as are the book characters. That's one of the interesting things about the whole series. Roberta ("Bobbie") Draper is a gunnery sergeant in the Martian Marine Corps (MMC). Gunnery sergeant is a rank. Hence the name "gunny."
@Horesmi

Mars is home to hundreds of millions, in different cities. Alex and Bobbie come from very different places on Mars. They have many different accents because people there come from different countries. Alex grew up in a settlement of Chinese, Indians and people from Texas. In time, for some reason Texan drawl took over, that's why Alex, Indian in appearance, has it.

Re: people should just sit down and talk instead of having wars, the great thing about this show is that it takes us out of our context just enough to turn a mirror on us without getting our hackles up. We don’t get defensive watching this because we aren’t invested with any one side. Try setting up a show like this with present-day nation-states that people identify themselves with and it just wouldn’t work; the takeaway would instead be how offended we are that “our side” is being depicted as the “bad guys,” because people are stupid like that. Like Miller says (minor spoilers), “you’re born to it, one side or another... and you play it out.” We get to see the dangers of our innate tribalism in action without falling victim to it in the process. It’s brilliant.

Mars has a bunch of different (for lack of a better term) "districts". they're not just in one big city. There are "cities" or "districts" scattered all over Mars, interconnected by underground tube trains. Think New York connected by subways, only the stations connecting districts are farther apart. Almost all of the Martian settlements are underground. Even in the relatively small NYC you have regional accents, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Jersey, ect. The various Martian districts have regional accents. Alex comes from the Mariner Valley district, which typically has a Texas/Southern/Midwest/cowboy drawl to their accent that has caught on among the largely Indian and Chinese population who live there. The actor, Cas Anvar is of Pakistani origin.

From what we have seen Miller is already enthralled with Julia and saw what happened to her and the people of Eros. He couldn't stand there listening to Dresdon talking about those victims as some resource to utilise the proto molecule. You could see he was getting distraught as he was making sense to everyone around them listening. I totally felt that impulse to stop it before everyone agreed.

@@Norbert_Sattler The answer is there is no right answer. Think of fighting in a war. Killing is wrong but if you don't kill you may have to live with more killing done by the person you could have stopped. Miller sees black and white like Amos. There is good and bad. This person is bad thus they must go to stop more bad. Miller doing this does not make him good it just makes him a person that says the evil has to stop here. This is why the Expanse is so good. These questions are going to keep popping up. Decisions to let someone live who is going to cause the death of others down the line. The moment of sticking to your convictions and choosing life may actually cause unforeseen suffering. Sometimes where we are and what we do sets in motions a series of events that we might not be able to live with later on. This is going to happen over and over in this series. Each time it will push your moral stance on things as it does with each character.

This scene with miller in the books was completely different. the guy who was talking about the protomolecule was making convincing arguments about how it could evolve the species but he was the head of the entire company's project and was doing at at the expense of torturing millions. So Miller saw him as the monster he was and shot him. I mean the guy was perfectly fine with killing children to advance the project and saw it all as necessary losses etc

(Not really a spoiler) In the books, Mars was colonised by an international group of scientists (among others). Large groups from texas and China (the main two that I remember, it's been a while). So it created a wide ranging culture with a mix of accents , same among the belters, except the belters had a larger Hispanic population. The belters language takes a lot of Spanish traits. I watched the first season when it was on SyFy. At the end I went out and got the books on Audible. And as always, the books are MUCH better than the show... BUT, this show stays very close to the books which is great IMHO. Some changes were made like introducing Bobbi Draper sooner than in the books, but I loved her character in the books and didn't mind that change at all. After reading/listening to the books, I have to say that Chrisjen and Amos are my favorite characters. If you love Chrisjen in the show, you'll adore her in the books. She curses like a sailor in the books which is hilarious because of the reactions she gets :) And Amos... what can I say... they don't call him "Murder Snuggles" for nothing :)

This show... You have to move past the "good guy" "bad guy" mentality... It is too complex for that, none of the characters can be broken down to being one or the other. Fred Johnson was a soldier who followed orders and killed unarmed families.... Does that make him a bad guy? Does the fact that he wasn't told they had surrendered make him a good guy even though he was responsible for their deaths? Every other character and their actions and motivations are similarly complex.

Yes, Alex is the "mom" of the Roci family; there is a reason Alex works to make the crew a "family." Notice that Alex didn't hold a grudge against Miller. Alex doesn't hold grudges. You saw that Belters still don't really totally accept Fred Johnson. If you recall the dialog between Colonel Fred Johnson and the Anderson Station protesters, that dialog was disjointed. Johnson never actually responded directly to what they actually said, as though he never heard what they were saying. Remember we told you not to forget about that kid. The writers have buried clues to the future in practically every line of dialog, every scene in the background. This is the best space combat scene I've ever seen. I've re-watched it a dozen times, and it's always great. Part of what makes it so great is that we saw Alex practicing hard to figure out how to transverse the stealth ship without coming into range of its guns. They worked for that victory. Just Miller killed Dresden, notice that he had dropped back and was watching Holden and Johnson instead of Dresden. Dresden was obviously had super-powerful Earth backers. Dresden had confirmed that he wanted to continue using humans as lab rats, and Miller knew those lab rats would always be Belters, over and over again, because Belters were nothing but animals to Earthers. You haven't heard Avasalara spun up yet. Not by a long shot. But it's important to realize that Avasalara hates Belters (remember she was willing to torture that one Belter to death) and Belters hate her. There are multiple domed "cities" on Mars. Mars was originally colonized by several different groups, particularly among them were Americans from Texas and a group from China. There are several other groups as well. So you hear that Bobbie has a New Zealand accent (which she does in the actual novel...they picked this actress to perfectly match the novel's description), and Alex has a Texas accent.

Miller was always going to kill him, he saw him on Eros.

Consider the dropping of the nuclear bombs on Japan during WW2. That killed a lot of people but did it save more lives in the end? I always thinks its funny that people automatically call something evil yet we use all this information gathered from death, suffering, disease, torture, and other disgusting human actions to increase our knowledge for the benefit of humanity. Is describing something as evil just a way to allow humans to feel safe from their actions? There is a ton of evil in the world that everyone ignores/tolerates, on a daily basis, for their own benefit. Welcome to humanity.....it ain't pretty.

2:05 Unfortunately the writing doesn't allow that logical option :) 5:34 & 6:51 He is a mass murderer of women and children, and he just there murdered someone... There is nothing good or great about him. 7:25 "for no reason" Yeah poor Fred, who murdered all those people, women, children, babies... 18:00 That is a scary way to think... 11:49 You do not let evil exist.

Post watch comment: They tone down Chrisjen's swearing a lot the first three seasons. Amazon does her more justice in season 4 😁 she swears like a sailor in the books, and I wish they would show her constantly snacking on pistachios in the show. If you think the outfits Avasarala has worn so far is impressive just wait until you see her closet..the woman's pajamas are even fabulous😍 Stay Awesome Carly, can't wait for more 💜🎥🎬📺🚀🚲💜

In the books it explains it more but Martians are a mix of highly intelligent people from different places on Earth and a bunch of Texans/Westeners. So it is basically a play on cowboy/Texan plus Asian, and English. I think the world building misses out because I think language and cultural differences would be also affected by gravity and other aspects of not being in a 1 G environment. I don't think belters would last after a few generations. Reproduction in low gravity probably would fail. But that would kill the story so you just have to take the leap of faith here.
@jrich749
@jrich749 4 жыл бұрын
Where belters go and why, when they are gestating, is actually further explained in season two.....and all belters take bone density drugs. Daniel Abraham, half of the book writing team behind The Expanse, actually got his degree in biology and he is very interested in astro biology too. There are little bits and pieces, throughout the show, explaining how people live/survive outside earth.

Book two opens with Bobbie (Gunny) doing stuff (I'm avoiding spoilers) and it is absolutely amazing. When you get to that point in the show I'm going to recommend reading that opening to the second book. The show is great, but it would be interesting to hear your view of that scene in the book after seeing the show's version of it.

"Gunny" is just short for her rank, "gunnery sargeant" (you'll learn her name shortly). Mars has different cities/areas settled by people from different places on Earth. The place that Alex is from was settled by people from Texas and south Asia/India, for example.

You do realize he had literally talked Fred into excusing the genocide of 1.5 million human beings? That's like having Hitler at gun point and you letting him talk you into letting him do what he's doing...... Miller was completely justified.
@tunguska-1454
@tunguska-1454 4 жыл бұрын
It's not really the same. The argument was that the massacre is done, let's not waste the benefits that can be gained from it and have let them all die for nothing. There were legitimate benefits to humanity to be had by controlling Dresden, keeping him on a leash, and analysing the results of his already-committed atrocities. Honestly, I'm still with Miller, but it's nowhere near as black and white as that Hitler comparison, and there's reasonable arguments to be made that Miller was letting all those deaths be in vain.

Since Julie's death, Miller is not quite right. His fight with Amus and backing up into the door, etc. is him not caring about his own safety anymore. He's very volatile.

He's also likely still suffering negative effects from the radiation poisoning and/or isn't used to the anti-rad medications yet. But then again... when he just backed through the door on the station he knew that all the guards were only equipped with non-lethal crowd control ammo, so the threat to his life was rather low either way.

He didn't shoot him because he was crazy, he shot him because he was making sense . Dresden's speech was a pitch he had made many times before. It was a pitch that had already successfully convinced many people. So not only was it working again, Dresden was delivering it with the confidence that it would work again Miller saw how dangerous that made Dresden and took him out

@@dontjudgemebymyname.4282 Yup. I love The Expanse, and the enthusiasm amongst the fans is great in general, but it's really one of the worst fanbases for splurging spoilers all over the place in an almost masturbatory excitement. People just rattle out this shit, so caught up in their own glee at reliving it that they don't give a fuck or maybe even don't realise that they're cheapening the experience for those still to enjoy it. I feel sorry for reactors to this show-unless they don't read any comments, they're never going to have the same sort of authentic experience as a first-time viewer without influence of commenters.

10:46. Miller's breaking his own rule, but It's just been amply demonstrated that the most dangerous people on the station are this bunch of itchy trigger fingers right here in this room. 11:28. Remember when Semi held Naomi at gunpoint? How Amos quietly moved behind him? Miller as Amos. If Fred had held a hard line with Dresden, Miller might have let him live long enough to be ripped to pieces by a crowd of angry Belters following his trial for genocide. Instead Fred started to buy into Dresden's pitch, and so sealed his death warrant. One in the brain, one in each lung just to make sure. Here lies Dr. Mengele, former monster, now mushroom food. It doesn't matter what gains or shiny baubles they offer. You don't make deals with monsters.
