The way he seemed to obey Naomi in the early seasons and everyone thought it was because he was into her. I took it as him knowing he had no sense of morality but wanted to do the right thing so was using hers to decide what was the right thing to do in any situation.

If you are wondering why the 'ring builders' opened all of the rings for the humans at the end here's a great answer i found on reddit: There are no live ring builders. They did not open the rings for humans to travel through. The protomolecule was sent to our solar system to build a ring gate that connects back to the hub. It got accidentally intercepted and the mission failed. Some time in the billions of years after this failure, the ring builders engaged in a multi-system war against an unknown antagonist. They lost. Ring space is a travel hub for the ring builders, managed by the ring space station. This station is in an automated high security lockdown mode and seemingly has been since the war: all gates are closed, anything behaving badly inside ring space is treated as a threat and neutralised. Meanwhile, humans discovered the protomolecule and tried to meddle with it. The protomolecule, breaking free of its constraints, finally got to progress its mission: build a ring gate, connect back to the travel hub. Humans happily stumbled inside said hub to meddle, blew up a nuke near the ring space station, and now the station thinks whatever came through this new ring is a threat and needs to be burned out. No one inside can get out to warn the rest of the solar system, either; the station has decided all of the ships inside are also threats and has grabbed them forcefully. The protomolecule is still trying to complete its mission: check in with home base, report "mission complete, gate built". Only there is nobody in the ring station who is answering. The protomolecule needs to investigate, to find a way to check in. Enter Miller. The protomolecule has absorbed Miller and determines it is a good enough tool to investigate a way to check in. It reconstitutes Miller and gets Miller to manipulate Holden into pressing buttons in the ring station so that the protomolecule can finish its mission and check in. In return, it, through proto-Miller, agrees to stand down the automated high alert lockdown that the station is under, which should free the ships trapped in ring space and stop the solar system from being fried. Holden pushes the button. Proto-Miller fulfils its end of the deal, and stands down the station. The station thinks: 'Oh, everything is OK now, the war is over, back to normal operations!', and opens the gates.

Re: Ashford -- he was doing what he honestly believed was the only choice. He didn't want to power down the reactor because it would take time to bring the laser back online in case it didn't work. As far as shooting his mate -- he's still a pirate at heart. Re: Amos -- it took me a bit, but I finally realized that he's drawn to truly good people: Naomi, Holden, Prax, Anna. It's as if he's, consciously or not, finding people to guide him and compensate for his lack of discernment. Even though their time together was short, his interactions with Anna are some of my favorite.

I think you missed a couple of details that explain Ashford's actions better. When the scientist detonated the nuke as a "test", he got the station on super-high alert and it started to power up the sun-killing beam we saw in Holden's "vision" inside the Nucleus. Ashford knew from Holden that the Nucleus had the power to "burn whole solar systems down like they were trying to cauterize a wound". So as soon as the Nucleus started to charge up after the nuke went off, Ashford realized that there was a concrete chance it was going to "cauterize" the Sol system and the whole of humanity with it. The data they were receiving was telling them that the Nucleus was charging up "as a railgun". That's why he took upon himself to stop it the only way he knew it would work: by destroying the Ring itself so to cut off the Nucleus from the Sol system and preserving humanity that way. He doesn't trust Holden because he doesn't know him. Last he knew, Holden was still the one who destroyed that UN ship and claimed the Ring for the OPA. So, based on the information at hand, he acted the only way he though it was right to save the whole humanity. Why not trying the Holden's way first? Bobbie asks a good question in this regard: Holden has been in the Nucleus in direct contact with Protomolecule, are we sure he is still Holden? Still human? Or is not somehow controlled by the PM for their alien purposes? Ashford is considering all of this and in his eyes the safest course for humanity is to destroy the Ring, cut off the Nucleus forever and save the human species. He's not wrong, given the information he had at the time. Also, quick clarification: they are not shooting "protons" or "anything that's faster than light" at the Ring :D Nothing we or they know of is faster than light. As far as we know, light is the fastest thing in the universe. They are just shooting a very, very powerful laser beam and laser is light. Light is photons, so, they are shooting photons a the ring :) That laser beam happen to be their communication device since all ships and stations in The Expanse communicate through "tight beam" which is, basically, space laser. The Behemoth has the biggest laser beam ever built by mankind since it was the Nauvoo before and it was supposed to send messages through light-years of space when it reached its intended destination in Tau-Ceti.

another driving force behind his decision to destroy it is that even if Holden's plan works, the station still exists. The ability to piss it off and end humanity still exists. Even if they save everyone in the ring space and stop the attack this time, he knows that it's human nature to fuck with everything they don't understand. Someone, sometime, will come back and tinker with shit they shouldn't and potentially end humanity. He feels like he's in a position to prevent that possibility, (in his mind an inevitable one) from ever happening.

The Expanse actually describe the expanse of worlds that can now be reached by the ring gate hub. Technically after 3 seasons, we kind of get to the "real" beginning. I think all 1300 systems have habitable/valuable planets, probably why the builders build a ring gate there in the first place.

"Bobby?" .... "Alex?" That is literally one of my most favorite moments in the series. Another thing I find frustrating, which is purposely done, is that a lot of the time Bobby is supposed to be the ranking officer and her Marines just don't listen to her. If they had they would still be alive. Also the ending to this season was such a fitting ending. The Expanse has never been about an alien entity being the big bad, yes there have been alien influences but a ring system allow travel to other systems was the ultimate on brand scenario. It leaves so much possibility and potential. It's never been about the science fiction it's always been about how science fiction is a vehicle to tell the ongoing, never ending story of humanity to constantly be at war with itself.

Previous episodes implied that Bobby didn't get full trust of her crew. Bobby also wasn't in leading role at first during this season. Her rank is enlisted or non-commisioned officer. The Station is a hub. All those rings that opened at the station are paired up with another ring in another solar system, so as long as the station keeps the gates open, you can come and go as you please. Also now that the season is over I can add one more meta thing. The creators of the protomolecule send a chunk of protomolecule in the form of an asteroid sized object that will take millions of year of travel at below the speed of light to a new solar system that the creators found. Once there, it would take over the life there and open a ring to the station. That allowed the protomolecule creators to travel to new solar system without the million year travel time. The one coming to us got captured by Saturn (fortunately for us) as a moon before it got to Earth. The "moon" of Saturn, Phoebe was not a moon at all, it was the protomolecule in deep hibernation.

That's water under the bridge. A much better question right now is whether the 1300 habitable systems will completely destroy Martian and Belter society, both of which exisst only because of the lack of more suitable (non-vac suitable?) places to live.
@kirkdarling4120
@kirkdarling4120 4 жыл бұрын
Philosophically, no. A correct moral action is not determined by a serendipitous result, it's determined by the logic of a philosophical system. Dresden's decision was the deliberate sacrifice of the Eros population without their consent. The fact that through the actions of more moral agents than Dresden the end was ultimately beneficial does not change the immorality of Dresden's original action. To paraphrase one of my favorite SF writers, "I object to that the way a lobster objects to boiling water. It might be his finest hour, but it is not his choice."

I think this was the best season finale, and potentially series finale I've ever seen. . This season, though a bit rushed because they fit a book and a half into 13 episodes, is still damn near perfect. You hit on the one weakness which is that we missed out on a lot of Clarissa's story so her motivations and arc are not well fleshed out like they are in the book. Other than that this is just awesome television. Had the series died here this would have been a fitting finale, leaving you with limitless possibilities to ponder but not leaving you on a total cliffhanger. I've really enjoyed your reactions so far, Carly. On to season 4!

This whole scenerio with Ashford makes more sense in the book, since it's basically certain that they're all going to die in the ring anyways because pretty soon they'll run out of food/O2. Ashford and the others on their side are scared shitless, and theres an underlying religious tone to their attempted sacrifice. Like they brought all the sins of humanity into the ring and now the ring is punishing them for their sins. Theres a counter part to Anna in the book who's like a shady tellevangelist guy who has a come to jesus moment in the ring. He's the one who gives Melba/Clarissa the idea that one good act can redeem her soul.

I think drummer does love Naomi but not in the way many seem to think. I think she loves her as friend and also as a sister. I think lately audience tend now see when two women or men get along as best friends in shows they now assume it's romantic love. And while I really don't care if they took it that way I just honestly don't see drummer seeing her that way. I don't know but only time will answer that. As for Ashford I have been hearing from the book readers that TV Ashford is written much better on the show which is a rare thing to hear from book readers. And I honestly still like the character because in those moments he wasn't doing it for power or hate. Anyone who would've heard Holden talk would think he was insane. So every action he was taking was to save the lives outside of the ring. So I'm like you I can't fault him for that.

Very minor book spoilers (no spoilers for future seasons or anything): In the books, Drummer is straight - or in a heterosexual relationship anyway. But here's the thing: in the books, Drummer first appears in Book FIVE as Fred's head of security on Tycho. The Drummer we see on the show is actually a mish-mash of a whole myriad of characters from the books. This includes Book-Drummer (duh), but most notably a character named "Michio Pa" who was not only captain of the Behemoth, but also bisexual and in a polygamous relationship. For this reason, I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that TV-Drummer has a thing for Naomi. She obviously considers her a valued friend, but her mild disdain for Holden doesn't come from nowhere...

Photons are the particles that light is made of. The communication arrays on ships in The Expanse have both radios (wide beam, for broadcasting to everyone) and lasers (tightbeam, for sending messages to a single location/ship directly). On the Nauvoo, the Mormons were planning on traveling to a star 12 light years from Earth. At those crazy distances, a radio wave would spread out and become super weak before it reached Earth, and even a super tight laser beam would spread out and weaken a lot, so they made the communication laser extremely powerful, so powerful that at short range, the intensity of the light beam could be a weapon rather than just sending information

I’ll wait for someone to correct me, but Amazon had not picked up S4 when the finale was shown. So that was that. And with at least another four books written, I can only imagine the frustration of fans before they took up a mission, flew a banner, launched a model Roci and became the Screaming Firehawks. I personally got into this when my brother pushed me into this and S4 was in post production and Amazon had already saved the show. So I never experienced the uncertainty of the Screaming Firehawks mission. But it’s a great story to watch in KZfaq. It isn't helped by the fact that there are some absolutely incredible characters like Amos, Ashford, and Drummer that really outshine them. Maybe she will show us some stuff we havn't seen next season, who knows. I agree when it comes to Holden though, he's pretty solid, especially in seasons 3 and 4.

Holden and Naomi are my least favorite characters in the books and series. I'm not sure if u had other actors portray them, it would help any. Love Drummer, but prefer book Amos. As for Ashford, I wish they'd given him a different name, because he's absolutely nothing like the character in the book.

In the books, all the other ring gates were there, just not open. The rings were all equidistant from each other so from the inside it looked like you were in the middle of a dandelion puffball. Hence the name of the earlier ep "Dandelion Sky"

SOOOO glad you stuck with this until this moment! Seriously, the opening of the Rings was one of the very best moments I have ever experienced in science fiction (in ANY form)! Season 4 is pretty good too...but S3 was (IMHO) the best Season so far...although we don't know what S4 sets up for S5 (and THAT is coming SOON, you might just get all caught up before the new season drops this fall!)

I'm so glad you finally reached this episode. I like the fact that you are picking up on themes that are likely to be explored down the line at some point. ;) (Season 4 is pretty good, but I think of it as a reloading season for some of the craziness that is going to come down the road...) As far as it being cancelled/picked up by Amazon, that story is crazily awesome as well. If you have a chance look up "Jeff Bezos saves the Expanse". The show is very popular with the science and technology community because of the shows realism, and as a result the cast and crew tend to be frequent guests on that particular conference circuit. Bezos was also someone who frequented the same circuit and the Expanse Crew met Bezos at one of the conferences. After some behind the scenes talking Bezos made some calls and then told the cast and crew (in front of the entire conference) that Amazon had picked up the show. It was an awesome moment.

The comm laser being misaligned was addressed. The belter says to Ashford that it was knocked out of alignment when the slowdown hit. They didn't detect it when they tried to beam through the ring, because it was only slightly off alignment and they were shooting at the center of the ring gate, so the laser still hit the ring interference, but when they aimed very precisely at the edge of the ring, at the structure itself, that's when they noticed it was off. Think of it like shooting a rifle through a hula-hoop. You won't know your sight is off if you just shoot to make it through a huge hula hoop, but if you aim for the actual hoop itself with the rifle being out of sight, you'll miss and you'll notice.

Notice how Clarissa got the Behemoth to shut down - she reversed a module in the power grid. She learns how to do this the first time we see her, when Ren (the guy she murdered when he found her bomb on the Seng Un) tells her the if one of these modules is put in backwards, it shorts out and shuts everything down. So she learns how to do her first act of good from the victim of her first act of her evil.

The "comm array" or communications array (not com ray) has a super powerful laser. That laser (just light, photons) was to be used to communicate with Earth when the Navoo is on its way to another star, another solar system. Its so powerful it can beam messages across light years.

Also, the rings are opened to the solar systems that all have habitable planets, similar to Earth... That's why the ring-builder was sent to Sol in the first place, but (un)fortunately didn't activate properly... Yes, you can go through a ring and come back... ...except when you go through a ring on one end, but you don't appear on the other end... (Season 5-6 spoiler)

Ashford did not decide to destroy the portal alone. He made the suggestion, but the decision was made by the commanding officers of all three sides, him for the Belters and the commanders of the UN and Mars. The potential harm in shutting down the reactor is that it will take time to get it running agian... more time than they have. If they shut down and it doesn't resolve the issue, they don't have enough time to bring the power to a level where they can shoot the laser in time before the sun is blown up. It was not a "let's try it and if it doesn't work use the laser" situation. It was either one or the other. Either sacrifice yourself for a rational plan or blindly trust the words of a person who appears to be insane. So yeah... his actions made absolute sense for a person in his position. To trust Holden was actually a massive gamble. Who knows what kind of mindscrewers the molecule put him through. For all they knew, the molecule could have made Holden think he was a rabbit if it wanted to. In the end it worked out, but it was still quite the gamble. The new planets are opportunities, but also problems. But I'll not say anything about that since that could easily veer into spoiler territory. It is something the writers did think about and incorporated into their story.

The story in the elevator shaft is VERY different in the book... First of all, they've switched places between Ashford and Drummer for some reason... It's a communications LASER, and it would allow the Nauvoo (back when it was still the Nauvoo) to remain in contact with Earth during it's generations-long journey to Alpha Centauri. To get a clear message across interstellar distances, the LASER has to be incredibly powerful. For some more background (in case you're interested in that sort of thing) Isaac Arthur has a great series on seeding the galaxy with generation ships: kzfaq.info/sun/PLIIOUpOge0LskSp9Jac9nE6xSDfZ83Tgf The Nauvoo was designed by the LDS Church to allow them to escape the solar system, and the laws on family size, and go to a place where they could expand their numbers, in keeping with their religious beliefs.

As for your thoughts on Clarissa not having enough time to flesh out her redemption arc, there is a reason for that. When this show aired, it had great critical acclaim, but pretty poor ratings on the SyFy channel. This is because everyone was streaming it on their own time via Amazon and not through cable viewings via the SyFy channel. Because of the deal they made, and the fact that SyFy wasn't yet embracing the idea of streaming, SyFy was only making money on first run viewings on cable. The producers of the show had a suspicion that they may not get a season 4 out of SyFy due to the low cable ratings, so the story and adaptation of Book 3 (S3E07 - S3E13) was trimmed of excess plot and made to fit in those few episodes. The producers wanted the series to end on a good note for the fans and not in the middle of a storyline that would never be completed. Book one was 15 episodes and Book 2 was 14 episodes. I assume had the writing not been on the wall, season 3 would have been longer. Thankfully of course, the campaign to save it worked and we have a much safer home at Amazon.

They first touched helmets right after Eros and the Marines again on Ganymede. I first read about that in 1965 in a book by Robert A Heinlein "Have Space Suit-Will Travel." There is a whole lot in The Expanse that first found its way into fiction in the books of Robert Heinlein and Larry Niven from the 50s and 60s. For instance, the concept of a civilization of asteroid minors called "Belters" is from Larry Niven. The suit technology, "flip and burn" and many other things originated in Heinlein's books.

I'd probably be more willing to side with ashford on the behemoth (without knowing what the viewer knows). But damn, people talk about how both hodlden and ashford are trying to do the right thing. No one ever talks about how both options are TERRIBLE. I'd either have to side with ashford, who's plan involves most likely killing everyone in the bubble, or Holden, a man seeing ghosts. I don't think it's fair to call out everyone for entering the ring when nobody asked them. I'd argue that Miller was basically an invitation card. I can't imagine just leaving that thing at the edge of the solar system for the rest of time, never once explored.

The breakneck speed of the back half of season 3 is a blessing and a curse. One major casulty is a proper characterbuilding for Melba/Clarissa which is almost completely absent from the show. The book did a much better job there, even though I heard that some people found parts of the book too long and boring. It is a tradeoff I guess. The show made her the older sister, in the book she was the baby sister. Her motivation differs slightly, but it leads to the same outcome. Its a good thing that the show is on streaming going forward, so they don't have to cut down storylines and characters as agressively just so they fit the narrow window of classic TV episodes.

Solar system is only used in regards to our own star. The more correct term is star system. Yes, the Ring opened up two-way travel to 1300 habitable star systems to humanity and overnight, humans evolves from being an interplanetary species to an interstellar one. The Behemoth, in its previous life as the LDSS Nauvoo, was supposed to be the first generational interstellar ship for humanity but now, interstellar travel is practically instantaneous. You are correct that this will have a social impact on humans. None more so than on Martian society. Until now, Martians have been working with one goal in mind, terraforming Mars. Now the motivation for that will change.Why spend generations of work to transform Mars when you can just pick a habitable planet to settle? The protomolecule isn't harmless. If a human is contaminated, the protomolecule will start to convert the person into the biomass it needs to complete its mission. Stay away from the blue goo! Lastly, I too, shared the same apprehension that Drummer was going to sacrifice herself against Diogo. I was like, nooooo! You can't kill one of the best characters on the show! Especially after she took the trouble of getting herself in an exoskeleton in order to walk. Thankfully, the elevator > Diogo.
