Ok, so I'm going to pre-empt all the comments that have accompanied this video on previous uploads. Previous requests for this clip and a shit load of views in the past have persuaded me to post again.
Yes the "Ganymede" map on The Roci's display, is of England and North Wales. And also superimposed on top of this to make it seem like a congested mess, is the island of Guam, along with it's international airport and Andersen Air Force Base for the USAF.
Also one of the aircraft ID's is of an Easyjet plane (EZY9RA) which I used to regularly fly myself from London Luton to Glasgow, Scotland where I lived for a number of years in Angus.
The other point is the wild inaccuracies that this slingshot scene represents in flying time etc. I do believe that the novel authors, did admit once they felt afterwards this was a big mistake.
Still a good bit of fun and some nice visuals to enjoy, particularly the MCRN encounter.

Even though it's uncharacteristically unrealistic for this show I have never had a problem with this scene. They earned themselves a grandiose spectacle for the sake of pure badassery. And when you compare it to all other sci-fi it's really not even that bad of a violation to the laws of physics. All it really comes down to is the fact that this maneuver would have taken far longer when it comes to time.

Reading the comics and understanding his back story really make me appreciate him even more. His favorite thing in the world was being a pilot and for the first time in his life he was finally the pilot of a badass ship like the roci. He’s literally live his dream in this scene. In the past he was a Martian cargo pilot, essentially just a truck driver that had to follow boring routes. But now he’s on the Roci which is like being a jet pilot

I don't care how scientifically inaccurate the visuals are, or reversing orbit that quickly on thrusters only when the destroyer appears. I will always absolutely love this scene, and I am glad they opted for impressive visuals and feel over trying to be overly accurate. The realistic feel of this show was one of my favorite things about it and the books. But sometimes it's better to just make an impressive scene over sticking to the truth of the matter when it comes to on screen adaptations.

Honestly, a better way to do this might have been to do what he himself did during the Assault on Spin Station - find a couple of civilian ships whose instantaneous trajectories would take them into Ganymede, fly in formation, then make like a dropped cargo container and coast into the Jovian system at high speed.
@jjbowe

Wouldn't that depend on how far the no fly zone extended? I thought no civilian crafts were allowed in the area.
@dsdy1205
@dsdy1205 2 жыл бұрын
@@jjbowe Nice thing about space is that something that's dropped keeps moving along its orbit. Doesn't matter how far away the ship was if it momentarily had an orbit that intersected Ganymede (and with the number of ships puttering about in the Expanse on tight shipping routes it's certainly possible), that orbit will carry whatever is dropped straight into Ganymede without a single thruster burn.
@rusher2937
@rusher2937 2 жыл бұрын
@@dsdy1205 Sure, but at that point you're extremely fast and will zoom past Ganymede, no chance to land on it without firing up your drive to decelerate, if you do that everyone will know that you're not just a cargo container and have more than enough time to react. In the assault on the Thoth Station this tactic worked because they could decelerate until they were very close already, and only needed to appear like a cargo container for long enough to get too close for enemy missiles to guide. In the Ganymede scenario the same tactic wouldn't work.

They have stated within the world itself that planets share the same size as ours and that this is not feasible. Like you sound absolutely unintelligent right now, as THE WRITERS of THE BOOKS and CO-WRITERS of THE SERIES have stated that this scene was complete BS and was just done to look cool for TV and within the universe of the Expanse this would've taken weeks to complete. The Expanse is a series which science is based on hard-sci fi, not Star Trek fantasy. The only thing unfeasable is how efficient the engine is, the rest is all feasible within our realm of science. well... it was in red. and Blue is said to increase awareness... so IIRC even IRL battleships all uses it in their ops room

@@PrograError Wrong! The reason the Roci has blue as the harzard light color is because as a Martian ship, Martians are generally desensitized to the color red as a warning or an alarm color and so in they're ships the colors are reversed so that red is the normal status color and blue is the harzard color status. Also they refer to Earthers as 'The Blues' (probably on account of being the only body in the Solar System with an actual (blue) sky and the blue look that the oceans give it from space. So it doubles up as the color of their enemy. Mars on the other hand is the "Red Planet", has a red sky and lots of iron and in the soil and the atmosphere means they see red a lot and have even come to associate it with their identity. It wouldn't make a great warning light color in the bridge of a ship.

Rossi is smart enough to plot a slingshot course around multiple small bodies in a matter of seconds but can't handle some evasive maneuvers? How the hell is that s*** even sneak up on them anyway

The math and misjudgment of scale and distance in this scene was so laughably and embarrassingly bad, it still hurts my brain to think about it even today. That journey using only those moons' gravity to slingshot your way around should have taken MONTHS, not the mere hours or whatever they seemed to imply. Some of Jupiter's and Saturn's moons have larger orbital radii than the Earth is far from the Sun (i.e. 1 Astronomical Unit (AU)) - Which means some moons take longer to orbit their gas giant host than it takes the Earth to orbit tthe sun in one cycle (1 year). So just do the basic math from that. I love this show but this was one of the few places they really screwed the science up - understandably in the interest of time and artistic license for TV entertainment purposes, but still. Great visual effects though.

A shame the way Cas Anvar was done. A simple allegation and then an “investigation”, then you are gone. The pathetic me too attack on society is another tentacle of socialist communism. Cas should have never been removed, his character brought a level of grounding to the show.

yeah they are by far the least scientifically accurate scenes but only in terms of speed and travel time of the ships. the maneuvers are theoretically possibe they would just take months instead of hours. this scene is far less accurate than the belter scene because of the time alex needs to compete the maneuver by, its implied he needs to get to the panet within a few hours to beat the MCRN ship when in reality this is laughable impossible since the real maneuver would take many days and the moons are not possibly as close as they are shown to be here. also the interaction with the MCRN ship destroys any sense of accuracy that was left. If he were somehow going fast enough to make reaching ganymede in time a possibility, there is no way he would be able to decelerate and correct his movement in order to avoid being seen by the MCRN ship after it suddenly appears in front of him. in addition it seems like the MCRN ship would have better scanners for detecting ships than "they cant see him because hes behind the moon". at least in the belter slingshot scene he's shown to be traveling at ridiculous speeds over the course of presumably weeks at least, and he doesnt make severe acceleration changes such as here.

@@Ariel_emerald i wish they had made the timeframe more reasonable and maybe have some way to indicate the passage of time, cans of soda floating by during maneuvers, looking progressively more dishevelled as time goes by during an excruciating few days of semi-regular high g maneuvering.
