In the fifth season of The Expanse we finally learn the backstory of Amos Burton (Wes Chatham) when he goes back to Earth to attend to personal business. While he’s there he goes to visit Clarissa Mao (Nadine Nicole) who he nicknamed Peaches. Clarissa is serving a life sentence in a UN penitentiary for the crimes she committed in the Slow Zone in season 3.These two characters have very different backgrounds, but wind up having more in common than you’d think.

Amos grew up in Baltimore, and had a traumatic childhood filled with abuse and exploitation. His mother died when he was young, and one of her friends tried to take care of him. His real name was Timmy, and he was born into a life of crime. Eventually he was put in a position where his boss ordered him to kill his friend Erich. His guardian Lydia helped him decide to spare his friend's life knowing that it would mean she would never see him again. Timmy took the new identity Amos Burton and left Earth for good. He became a mechanic and ended up working on the Canterbury where he met his future crewmates from the Rocinante.
Clarissa Mao was born a child of privilege as the daughter of Jules Pierre Mao. Her sister Julie rebelled against him, and ended up becoming infected with the protomolecule on Ceres station. When her father was put in jail for his crime Clarissa tried to avenge him. She traveled to the belt under the name Melba Koh, and got black market implants. Her plan was to humiliate and kill James Holden as she considered him to be responsible for what happened to their family. Her plan failed, but she redeemed herself somewhat by helping to save everyone on the Behemoth.
Amos was visiting Peaches in the Pit when the Rocks hit Earth in season 5. They were able to escape together, and for the moment she has escaped her life sentence. Amos and Peaches are both killers, they both made it out of a life sentence, and they both got to have a new life. Amos was taught that you can live a good life even if you aren’t a good person by Lydia, and has tried to help Clarissa in that same way. They make a great pair, and their relationship is one of the most interesting in the Expanse.

Apologies but a few days after this video was published a third party copyright claim company did a manual claim against this video. My use of the content is clearly within Fair Use, but they denied my dispute knowing I won't likely take them to court for such a small amount of money. I was forced to trim to sections from the video rather then allow them to claim my original content. These are the two missing sections: 3:58 Why the change of heart then? In the time after the events in the slow zone in season 3, the crew of the Roci agreed to transport Clarissa back to Earth to stand trial for her crimes. It’s a six-month trip, and they basically put her in a cabin, put a cuff on her leg that prevented her from going to places on the ship that they didn’t want her to have access to, and they more or less ignored her. The conversation in the excerpt I opened the video with is from the last chapter of book three, and in that we learn that Amos takes an interest in her in those last five weeks. They become friends while working together in Amos’ shop, but we never actually see their time together. We don’t see that in the books or the TV show. 6:52 Not from a lack of trying things go pear-shaped with her plan. She’s captured. She gets an opportunity to help on the Behemoth, and she has a change of heart. She uses her mods, she takes out Ashford, and deactivates the behemoth’s comm laser and pretty much saves everyone.

@@PetePeppers1 - What I mean is that your pinned comment ends with "These are the two missing sections:" ...literally that's all. It doesn't say "Read More" either. If you put time-stamps or other information after that quoted phrase, I can't see it. If I knew how to share a screenshot with you I would. Maybe there's a problem with my view? I don't know. When I first watched, I noticed one cut, but I must have blinked past the other. It's not a big deal - it's just that the pinned comment appears unfinished. Great video, tho - loved the insight on these characters, since I haven't read the books yet. Thanks!

Wes Chatham puts so much love into the role. He read the books and made it clear from the start that he wanted to be Amos and goddammit he plays him beautifully. I couldn't think of a better actor to play him. If anyone deserves his role, its him.

I think it was Naomi in the first book who said he latches on to certain people and uses them as an external, aftermarket conscience. He recognizes that he isn’t wired normally and takes steps to compensate. It’s why he was so eager to get back to his crew this season - he realized he was backsliding.

Considering Amos's troubled backstory, the resulting survival instincts, the fact that he chooses to try and live like a good person could arguably make him the most noble character, as he recognises what he is, and through sheer force of will tries to move past that.

It might be from a video game but its profound to me. Paathurnax, a dragon from Elder Scrolls, says, "what is better, to be born good or to overcome one's evil nature through great effort?" Always stuck with me. Amos is kind of the living embodiment of that.

I like Clarissa and her story of redemption. One scene from S3 where they rescue Prax's daughter showed really deep compassion that Amos had for Prax and may have been an aberration for someone who lacked empathy. I'm talking about the scene where Prax is about to shoot the doctor and Amos comes up to tell him, "You're not that guy." I believe that came from Amos knowing how it would tear Prax apart to kill him in cold blood. He spared Prax that turmoil by sending him away and then, giving the doctor his well deserved justice. That led to his most famous line, "I am that guy." Great emotional depth for a character like Amos.

Yeah, Amos knew that killing Strickland would be terrible for Prax, no matter how well deserved it was. And he knew that it would be absolutely nothing for him.

My favorite moments was when Eric asked Clarissa "Why does he call you Peaches?" And she says "I don't know." which to me sums up Amos at least in terms of himself to other people. They don't get all the way he sees the world/general thought proccess but just kinda roll with it because it's well.. Amos.

Not having read the books I assumed that Amos was the archetype of a "Warrior" and had some kind of military background. He was the "muscle" and guardian of the other crew members. I was surprised to learn that his background, aside from getting little love, consisted of being a victim or creating victims. I used to speak to groups of inmates that were within a year of release. I would always say something to the affect of "you guys may not be pillars of the community but you can pretend to be. Whether you are a cheat, thief or thug when you are presented with a situation on the outside ask yourself "what would a decent, law-abiding person do". Do this consistently and you will become that person. Some actually did that and changed the trajectory of their lives. This is what Amos is trying to do.

That's also a comment brought up in the books that people see Amos record and think his the muscle but acutally it's fucking smart his the ship's engineer, that's literally rocket science there's a scene where he did complex calculations in his head faster than anyone in the crew.

Amos is my favorite character. How huge is it that he doesn't just unconsciously/subconsciously know he needs an external moral compass but he admitted it out loud. Through the seasons we see a lot of growth by Amos. Kudos to Wes for bringing so much understated nuance to the character and actually making me care about a 'killer'

My favorite part is where he stopped the plant doc from killing his daughter's doctor. Amos knew what that would do to him as a person, and knew he wouldn't be able to atone for it, to himself. Amos on the other hand had no issue at all with what needed to be done. Good life indeed.

Good job! You're the first one I've seen that connects Amos's lack of fear to the story Peaches tells about monsters. And Amos's response, "I need to get back to my crew immediately after."

I like the way they work together as a “tribe of two” because they each represent what a lot of us are feeling at our lowest points - minus the murdering. They’re a good metaphor for those who come from lives of apparent privilege yet loneliness, and those who come from a background where we feel we weren’t given opportunities as kids, but perhaps had “that one person who never gives up” on us. Both struggle to find that inner good person, and fight off their demons. They’re not irredeemable people, and perhaps neither are we.

Being exposed to violence on a regular basis changes a person. It no longer shocks you when caught in the moment and that alone gives clarity to a person. Combat does this, but there is a price to pay on your psyche, a price you pay for the rest of your life. Wes does a good job of expressing the look, the lack of emotion and thought process in his character Amos.

Odd thing is, when he said that I didn't wonder about a spicy secret. I guessed what it was. Wes Chatham is VERY good at conveying subtle, mostly suppressed feelings in ways that creep through the mind and haunt us.

As Amos said to Alex, there are three kind of people: bad ones, ones you follow and ones you need to protect. I think he sees Clarissa as someone he needs to protect. Not like he needed to protect Anna (someone pure and righteous), but as someone really broken that he hopes it's possible to repair. In a way, Clarissa represents that redeemable part of him that he considers lost forever, but that maybe she can still somehow get back. In the books she's a lot more fragile (phisically and mentally) than in the show, so it's a lot clearer (to me, at least) where they stand.

Yeah, Nadine Nicole does a pretty good job, but they can't really depict her the same way with a healthy actor. I always picture her wasting away.

I feel like we didn't get to savour Clarissa's transformation enough. We saw her in season 3, and then for most of season 4 she we didn't. All of a sudden she's this new person in season 5. I didn't even realize it was her until someone said her name, then it kinda came together. One of the few, if not the only mistake the show made. And even then it doesn't really spoil the experience, just removes a tiny bit of the emotional edge.

12:30 - 13:00 is why I have always thought of Amos as kind of a Zen warrior. No attachments, no ego, etc. As the series moves forward we see Amos forming attachments and personal morality. I think he is the most dynamic character, novelistically speaking.

I always looked at them as the caring relationship between two individuals, who knew, how fast they could snuff such a fragile thing like human life from another at any moment. But they always chose not to do it. Both have to keep their respective monsters in check, they had a common sense of understanding.

while I understand the whole "kill your darlings" thing, they should not have killed Ashford. The only thing I can think of to justify it is that in the book he was kind of a jerk, and the series had to eventually come back around to the books.

I think it's amazing how the writers really got so granular with each of the personalities, created their backstories and beyond the main plot lines, really integrated these characters into the plot as well as each other. Everything is so dynamic about them whether we're talking an individual episode, an entire season or the first six books. The TV adaptation is the best I've seen yet when comparing to so many other shows & books. It blows away the TV adaptation of shows like GoT, Hunger Games, Harry Potter, LotR, Hobbit or the Divergent Series to name a few. And some of these shows had massive budgets comparatively. I feel this series should set the bench mark for all series in the future and if it does, say bye bye to Star Trek and most of the Star Wars junk that has been so very recently thrown at us. (Mandalorian not withstanding)

Amos is a character with such depth and Wes did a great job in loving the source material and bringing the nuanced character out on screen. Even the writers said they didn't imagine Wes as what Amos would look like but they love how he brought the character to the screen.

Amos is a sociopath. Sociopaths are made not born. Amos became a sociopath at 5 yrs old when he decided to stop feeling as a way to survive his abuse. The thing is....Amos knows he is a sociopath; he knows he is different from others and he wants to do better by people now. That's why he clings to people with moral a compass. Naomi, Holden, and even Alex provide the "right thing to do" motive that Amos lacks. What is significant in the season....is that Amos is on is own. He is desperately trying to do the right thing. When he confronted the survivalist, he tried to make a fair trade. He left the old man alone in the woods and didn't steal all of his possessions. Its a big step for him to be at least TRYING to have empathy for others, rather than just looking out for himself only. Amos connects with "Peaches," because by saving her, he has hope to save himself.

If I remember from the books, specifically the novella that explains Naomi and Amos' relationship, Amos knows that he is broken and he uses Naomi as his "touchstone" for guidance on how a decent person behaves. Naomi, on her part is trying to make amends for her unwitting part in one of Marcos' earlier terror attacks, killing innocent bystanders - the issue that drove Naomi from their family.

I would really love a video about Holden's evolution, from the idealistic, impulsive young man of seaon one, to where he is now. I think many people misunderstand or underestimate his character, but he's actually extremely interesting and, if you really think about it, the one who changes and evolves the most of all the characters (which is, to me, a sign of a very well written and realistic character). For those of us who read the books, it's maybe easier to understand him, because a big part of the story is told from his pov, but on the show he's often overlooked because all the supporting characters are absolutely phenomenal and they often have the best punch lines (Amos and Drummer, especially).

Pete, you dropped this video at a really opportune time. I’d JUST finished listening to the Space The Nation podcast (former hosts of The Churn), which is one (along with your videos) of a VERY few pieces of Expanse content I follow. They’re three weeks behind, just recapped 506, and were discussing this exact subject. Their take was that Amos sees Clarissa is capable of acting like Amos, despite having a more conventional and nuanced understanding of right vs. wrong than Amos does. They’re similar enough to be sympatico, and the differences between them are things they can learn from each other, while watching out to make sure they don’t get out of hand.

Amos did show a little fear (at least as much as he can) in Season 4. When he was blind, he did walk away from the colonists without a rain coat to protect him from death slugs. Seems a little suicidal. I love the interaction when Holden goes after him. It was a lovely addition to the Amos story.

I love Amos and 🍑 x 2 relationship. I think Amos and peaches are diametrically different. They have both done some things that“ Good people don’t do.“ One line of dialogue that was NOT in the books that I think really summarizes their relationship is when. * spoiler alert 🚨 Amos says, “You can lead a good life without being a good person.” His main moral issue in life is the fact that he doesn’t feel bad about the stuff he does and he’s not afraid. That, I think is his biggest demon as far as his personality goes . He needs people like Holden and Naiomi to be his moral compass. That’s why I love to dude as a character, because even though bad things that happened to him who made him who he is. He still trying to become a better person by following the example of others if he can’t figure it out himself; which shows intelligence and he wants to be a good person.

Simply put: It proves Amos isn't a sociopath with no feelings towards others outside of his current crew and Clarissa isn't a spoiled brat that turned homicidal because things didn't go her way. They "work" together because they are flip sides of the same "unfeeling" coin. Basically that she makes Amos more human and he makes Clarissa more likeable.

I like her redemption arc. It will be interesting to see who will be the new pilot for the Roci as the unfortunate departure of Cas Anvar. Even though Bull is piloting right now, he really doesn't have any feeling for Holden. I think having Clarissa become the new Roci pilot would really create some interesting character development for the cast. Amos put his trust in the crew and now it would be time for the Roci crew to put their trust in him. We know Clarissa can pilot, maybe not as well as Alex, or any military pilot but she wanted to take ownership of the the Razorback when Julie left, and JP said "do'n't be absurd" or something like that. I had been staying away from speculating because I thought they might not give Alex and end this season due to the timing of the allegations. I doubt they had a plan, but either way it kind of makes sense to use a known character like Clarissa or Bobbie. They could pull Bull back, but as you mentioned as he is now he wouldn't fill the same role as Alex. He's abrasive with Holden, and almost seems hostile towards Naomi.

I think a good example of Amos always searching for that moral compass is when he was approached at the docks after reminiscing about his time with Lydia there. You see in the previous episode that he went out of his way to make a fight happen on the shuttle. Wanted to make sure he can finish the fight when it started by getting it to go down in the bathrooms where there aren’t cameras - tells the guy he didn’t stop them from robbing his cabinmates for “them” - actually stopped them to get into a fight for himself. Now here we are back at the docks where a fight he would love to have is just about to walk up on him. Instead of welcoming it, he tells them no. Now to the audience, it looks like he is just intimidating them down like a badass - which he is but what is truly happening is him saying no to this fight that he would love to have after reconsidering a conversation from Lydia. Love this show

The scene on the shuttle to Earth was a lot more interesting in the books. It's in the first couple of chapters in his POV and he struggling to understand what's going on with what he's feeling about Lydia's death. He thinks he might be getting sick, and then hears her voice telling him he's just sad. He picks the fight more or less to work through it as he gets relief from the violence. When he avoids the fight later it struck me as he was feeling better knowing that she died of natural causes and had a somewhat decent life at the end.

The way I see Amos calling her peaches could be to do with the dessert (though that seems slightly out of character who knows what's going on in Amos's mind half the time) but it could be more to do with giving her a new life. Amos took a new name and made a new life for himself. He sees himself in Clarissa. Amos also doesn't show affection much but I think the nickname is a sign of affection. A cute nickname for an enhanced killer. Maybe that's obvious or bullshit but part of the reason I like Amos is that he seems to be in his own world and doesn't see the need to explain himself. So we may never know the reason as if you asked him directly he'd most likely say something like "I like the name peaches". I love Amos so much he's my favourite next to Avasarala.

Great analysis of one of my favorite relationships on the show. I'm not necessarily shipping them as I think their bond may turn out to be more spiritual than romantic. They may both even be aromantic by nature and therefore won't go there.

I'm pretty sure Anna traveled with Clarissa on board the Roci & she had an influence on Amos as well regarding his attitude towards Clarissa. He responds to & is protective of people who are gentle & non violent & altruistic ( Naomi, Prax, Alex, Anna, etc) So yeah, he started feeling empathy for Clarissa on the trip back to Luna as he spent more time with her. They're an interesting pair & I wish the show could have done as good a job with her POV in season 3 as the book did. Not understanding what motivated Clarissa is what compelled me to read the novels & I'm so glad I did.

The show seemed to imply that Anna traveled with them, but she just set it up in the book. She was the epilogue in Abaddon's Gate and was still on the UNN Thomas Prince.

But I think the show definitely inferred Anna having an impact on Amos too. I liked how the show portrayed seeds being planted in Amos' mind & his burgeoning self awareness. Best part of the show especially since Wes Chatham is perfectly cast.

Would a spinoff soap opera "Peaches & Amos - 2 Souls Adrift in the 23rd Century." satisfy your hunger? You only have so much time and always risk losing a show's pace and main story if you bog down too much in couples drama or this season, the Nagata Family subplot. The time put into Nagata this Season may end up making Season 5 less satisfying for most watchers if the last 2 episodes wrap with the climax being aside from some little war and battles no time was alloted to go with, "Filip loves Naomi Again!"

Amos is and has always been my favorite character. He's some form of sociopath (He forms attachments, is very protective of the people who holds dear) who tries his best to be a good guy. He knows he needs people around him to keep him in check, tell him what's right and wrong. He's trying to overcome his nature.

Watching the evolution of Amos as a character was so amazing and subtle. He starts off as some mindless, amoral thug who would kill anyone that threatens his tribe. Then, he matures into a very sensitive and caring hero. Most people missed it, but when he BFF Prax finally caught the doctor who wanted to use Mei as a guinea pig, Prax felt the need to kill him. Amos stopped him by telling him, "You're not that guy..." knowing the guilt that would tear Prax apart from a cold blooded murder. So he let him off the hook and then told the doc, "I AM that guy..." probably bc of his childhood experiences with adults who exploit children. Then, he showed Clarissa compassion by letting her have the choice to kill herself if she wanted to. Clarissa also did a lot of maturing and instrospection with her time in jail and the remorse she showed. I love the look on Holden's face when Amos convinced him to let Clarissa be part of the crew. They got along and too bad something more didn't come of it, like Amos and Clarissa hooking up and having a child in the 5 years she had left. Of course, that would have affected Amos's path in the last book with him going to Laconia. I guess Bobbie and Naomi would have raised his kid then.

I really love many of the characters in this series. Amos is one of the most interesting because of the details and long history that was developed. I think Holden's character could be more interesting based on his family history and time in the military but it does not seem to be expanded on in the TV series.

I've always thought of Amos as a "self aware psychopath". I know that it isn't quite a correct term, but that's what I use to describe him. He understands that he doesn't understand people the way that most people do. He's seen the horror on other people's faces at his reactions. He has no desire to be a bad person, so he surrounds himself with people who can be his moral compass. I've read the books, but not the novellas yet. He'll always be the last man standing.

I felt like some of the stuff about his childhood in the show was a little vague in the episode but you explained it here well so I understand why he is the way he is now. Amos was also given a gift that he didn't expect in season three when he and Prax found Mei and Prax called him, "his best friend in the world" right before the "You're not that guy." scene. Later on you see Amos' phone and Prax is tagged as, "My best friend in the world."

Amos calls Clarissa "Peaches" because of her alias, Melba. A bowl of Peach Melba is the perfect after-dinner treat and its simple elegance makes it something truly special.
