With naval ships as a standard rule of thumb, you need 3 to ensure one is at sea, because the other two or either in a shipyard undergoing a refit or is tied up to the dock for a maintenance/training/crew leave period. So if you want six frigates on patrol at all times, you need 18 frigates in you naval fleet. That is why the UK has an issue with only having 2 QE-class carriers, the plan is to use amphibious assault ships with flight decks that can handle F35 fighters to partially cover those gaps when either carrier is not available.

This came immediately to mind. We have absolutely nothing to base that assumption on, in fact it would make more sense if the hull numbers were not sequential to disguise the size of the fleet.

Case in point, the Donnager has the hull number 84. That class was introduced as part of the fleet modernisation program which included the Morrigan and Corvette classes, so are we to assume that the entire Martian fleet before the Donnager was less than 80 ships, in and out of commission?

Agreed but the video seems to be a best guess. He even states it's an extrapolation based on what we see on screen. I think some of it is off because I believe there were only 8 Donnager class ships and the Donny was destroyed leaving 7 left. Of course they could have built more after the Donny was destroyed and/or during the war. Again it's a best guess as we are not given any exact numbers. I haven't read the books but from what I have read online they don't give much on the numbers either.

The MCRN had a lot of damaged ships during the war with Earth, so instead of repairing them it is more cost effective to strip them down using critical components for some new ship builds and just scrap the rest. Additionally the Mars economy was based around terraforming, and now that the ring gates connected 1,000 habitable worlds the economy crashed so they can't sustain a larger expensive Navy like they had before. They don't give specifics but I would assume some of the larger MCRN Warships would be stripped of offensive weapons and sensitive systems and converted into colonial vessels as transports for transit to the Laconia Ring Gate.. As for stealth ships they really are not that invisible to scans, they can only really hide with the drives shut down or in a large battle with multiple ships, where sensors would bypass them for larger signatures. Other then that yes they show up like a regular ship or maybe a smaller vessel that would be considered non-military. Yes optical and LADAR / RADAR tech has increased in the 24th century but so has stealth tech but space is big and if they detect a drifting object they won't point imagery scopes at one of hundreds with in detection range. Stealth ships operate in formations with other ships and cut their drives while approaching enemy ships on other vectors so when the battles start they hide amidst the clutter of heat signatures in a small zone of space. A tight formation of Stealth Ships can disguise their drive plums together making 8 ships decelerating towards a target appear as one drive plum on sensors and optical imaging until they flip into attack position

@@Xightly_Loopid_001 I saw the battle of six stealth ships against the Donniger. It was epic. Today’s tech allowed us to spot Oumuaamoua. James Webb is so sensitive it can see a bumblebee size object on the moon. I think the detection tech would be able to spot the stealth tech and outpace it. The DSP would allow for filtering of all objects detected with cameras, radar, flir, LiDAR, etc faster than any supercomputer used today.

@@GG-si7fw They are capable of detecting stealth ships if they are directly looking for them (even the sensors of the Cant picked up something if I remember correctly) however you would have to look in the right spot (space is BIG) and do that constantly. Additionally, using active radat basically gives enemy torpedos a guide beacon directly to your ship so you would want to use it sparingly in combat situations. About camera tech: The ships are visible in the show because we as the viewer need to be able to see them, without navigation light, they would just be a black outline against the mostly black background. For normal objects, you can use infrared as they are significantly hotter than the sourrunding space but stealth ships cool their hull for exactly that reason. In conclusion, stealth is not really about making it impossible to spot, but rather impractical.

In S1E2 The Donnager is able to detect the presence of the Protogen stealth ships, but is not able to determine the size or number of ships until they power up their drives.

It does with with the Martian navy though, as the Morrigans are clearly the FIRST ever destroyers to roll off the nations yards. Current Royal Navy destroyer pennant numbers started in 1948, so the specific ship you mentioned (HMS Dauntless) is the 32nd destroyer (the number 13 is not used for superstitious reasons) to have gone down the yards since 1948, of various classes.

Railguns are laser tech using particle accelerators to launch and guide kinetic projectiles particularly Planetary Railguns that are large laser arrays projecting guided missiles. Torpedoes and PDC's are smaller weapons systems that require less space on ships making them more common. Laser scanning and targeting are used for everything. So basically The Expanse ships use lasers that have a kinetic warhead.

Focusing lasers is not limited by our technology, but by physics. So we cannot get around the fact that laser light spreads out over distance, making it less damaging. On the other hand, with the insane engines of the expense, kinetic weapons are made way more powerful. A missile can hit hundreds of thousands of kilometers away, with its full force (maybe even more force than close range, because it could accelerate longer). In the books lasers are used against people (in the ring station from beginning of season 2). That laser is defeated by a special smoke grenade. And people have ablative armor that can protect against lasers. Also, the existence of the Epstein drive shows that they are able to create very heat resistant/reflective materials, the same kind of material should defend against lasers quite well? I guess the idea is: there are all sorts of ways to protect against lasers (reflective armor/ clouds, ablative armor, rolling the ship, actively cooled armor) & lasers require continuous time on target to do damage. But protecting yourself from a solid object which moves at many kilometers per second is really hard & colliding objects each do damage even with one hit.

@@kedrednael During season 3 in the slow zone the Behemoth used its comm laser on the ring core missing with the first shot, so lasers appear like you said to only be effective at closer ranges.

@@SurfTrekTonics But it only missed because the laser was physically damaged/ misaligned by the slowdown deceleration. Hitting lasers is the easiest thing in the world, when they aren't broken. It's much easier than hitting bullets, which have to deal with barrel flexing, recoil, time-to-target (so improvements in the aim cannot be made instantaneous), vibration. With 'focusing laser is limited by physics' I don't mean aiming it. I mean the light spreads out, so when it hits the target, less energy is delivered per area, less damage occurs, protection is easier. I wonder what would have happened if the laser did hit the ring. Could the proto-molecule have changed how much energy photons carry? Maybe that means you don't lose energy through infrared radiation anymore, and everybody would die of heatstroke inside the slow zone (except if they turn the thermostat down I guess). Or photons wouldn't activate the photoreceptors in the retina anymore, so everybody would be blind.

@@kedrednael Also they are extremely large arrays that don't fit on most ships. Railguns / particle accelerators are on larger ships and the Planetary Railguns appear to be lasers that project kinetic warheads. The Roci had a railgun installed but it was an advanced retrofit funded by Avasarala making it uncommon for smaller ships.

The Anubis Stealth Ships were a Private Earth Corp clandestine fleet built by a Protogen subsidiary company owned by Mao-Kwikowski Mercantile. I believe 7 or 8 were shown on screen so I would guess maybe a dozen were built in total. My theory is the MCR traded the Banshee stealth designs in exchange for protomolecule science program overseen by Protogen as not to be linked directly to Mars.

It was my understanding that Mars had a back hand in Mao-Kwik in regards to Phoebe station and it's black ops projects. I thought maybe due to that they may have also been involved in stealth development for the Anubis class, especially since later on we see that Mars appears to be the only source for the material in the solar system.
