unfortunately not very good actors. not talking about all shows must have superstars . some of the actors can't act if their life depended on it . sgt Draper for example or Holden his angry intense parts are comedic. but the show is so good it helps bearing the horrible acting.

One thing you got a little off is Julie was communicating with Miller back on Ceres, when he walked into her place and heard her voice say "You belong with me", the exact same words she used when she met him in person. Plus, he's been seeing her as if she was standing there, just like Holden was seeing Miller standing there. After disassembling them to their basic building blocks, like it did the ship on Venus, it can re-create them or project them on someone's mind at will. So for whatever reason, the proto molecule knew Julie's fate was tied to Miller, and one way or another the Proto molecule guided him to her, just like that floating bird led him on.

I don't think that was really Julie. I think it's the proto-molecule just using her memories. It's not Julie that is on love with Miller it's the proto-molecule. It wants to understand how a man who was hired to find Julie still be coming for her after finding her dead. Why?

I’m a little late to the expanse. It is a great show. But something happened in season two that I wish someone would explain to me. There was a flashback episode,, of a guy on a ship flying into space. Not be able to stop or slow down his ship. What happened to that guy? And what did it have to do with the overall show or season?
@brandiebraxton4232
@brandiebraxton4232 4 жыл бұрын
@Angel majorjoy, that guy was the inventor of the Epstein drive, which is the technology that allowed ships to travel at multiple g-forces and allowed humanity to expand their scope into the belt. He exponentially increased the speed at which space travel could happen, and therefore humans were able to expand beyond just the Earth and Mars. He's like the equivalent of their Edison who invented electricity and spurred the industrial revolution.

Paul Taylor Hmmm. I think so. That story was an adaptation of the short story 'Drive' by James S.A. Corey (Authors of the books the show is based on). I don't want to spoil anything just in case but there are numerous references to the Epstein drive (which power most of the space ships in the expanse) and that flash back story tells of it's creation by Solomon Epstein. Along with the main series of books James S.A. Corey wrote a bunch of novellas set in the same universe to accompany the main plot. It seems like they will add these into the TV adaptation as well :)

The classic book VS show argument will transcend time and space man. The books are very similar to the show so you could skip them for sure without missing too much story in this rare case. That being said, the books have so much more detail and the characters are far more fleshed out. The books are very funny too and there are some great third person descriptions and analysis of the world and humanity in general that you simply can't recreate in a show as the only dialogue are from spoken words from characters. In the books you have the characters thoughts and feelings described as well as the authors thoughts and options too which you simply cant replicate on screen. I can't see into the future but based on what we have seen so far and what I predict is that you won't lose much main story by skipping the books but you will miss out on excellent writing and richer scenes and characters. I love the books, I love the show. If you are a fan, read them all, watch it all, masturbate to it all :D

Great review/explanation. Agree that the expanse might not be for everyone, but it 'sure as fuck is for me.' Like, custom-tailored to my tastes in television/sci-fi. Totally second bobby's attractiveness, and i like that she's got a little weight on her. It seems like a rule on tv that any female main character must be thin. I get that people prefer attractive protagonists (the men as well), and i do generally share society's prejudices w/r/t the female form, but come on, she looks good, and why not a little more variety here and there? I just thought that was kind of a bold casting move, one small addition to a long list of why this show is amazing. But anyway, i'm wondering if anyone can, without spoiling anything, confirm or deny something. The protomolecule must have been drawing from miller's thoughts/memories, right? I mean, she cynically threw out the term 'kidnap job' to describe his being tasked with tracking her down, just as miller did with shadid, then quoted his daydream that 'you belong with me', and a protomolecular apparition of the fucking BIRD from his place in ceres led him to her. Were those bits not in the books, or does the fact that the iteration of julie he talks with must be either not julie at all, or at least not completely, go unaddressed later? I don't want to know what the protomolecule is or is up to, but... is all that just left hanging?
@JakesPlace
@JakesPlace 6 жыл бұрын
Raketemensch 00000 Bobby in the books was massive. Like twice the size of this actor. Meant to be physically terrifying and intimidating. So it's not that bold of a casting choice really. In fact many book nerds are upset that she's too thin and too small lol. As far as the proto molecule is concerned I can't say shit without revealing too much. We learn more as the books/show continues dont worry. And yeah the let's just say the proto molecule is a part of something much larger, something that transcends our own dimensional understanding of the cosmos... ive said too much already :O

Are you sure Julie flew Eros into Venus? I thought the bomb went off killing Julie (and Miller) thus disabling the physics defying "Proto Drive", which caused Eros to get caught in Venus's gravity and crash into it. I haven't read the books, so please only answer if you can do so without spoiling anything. Thanks in advance.
@JakesPlace
@JakesPlace 7 жыл бұрын
YO DUDE! I just re-watched that scene. In the books, and in the show, Miller tells Julie "We can't go home." (meaning earth). She says in reply "We can't stop the work." She is referring to the "prime directive" of the proto-molecule (I cannot discuss this in more detail sorry.) Miller tells Julie "That's fine, how about we go to Venus." So yes, 100% Miller convinces Julie to change course and intentionally fly Eros into Venus. Julie also touched the nuke and infects it with the proto-molecule, this seemingly disables it as when she removes her hand the dead man switch doesn't start beeping again. So yeah dude, Miller saves the day by convincing Julie to crash Eros into Venus. COOL!
@Topplethepyramid
@Topplethepyramid 7 жыл бұрын
Overlooked the part that Julie indeed disabled the bomb. This "prime directive" of the proto-molecule does tickle my curiosity. Do you think it will be addressed in S3 or will that be further along in the story? Anyways, thanks for answering.
@JakesPlace

Topplethepyramid It's hard to say if they will explain all in season 3. We no doubt will see much more development regarding the protoo-molecule but as the books and the seasons don't line up exactly it's hard to predict. For example Avasarala wasn't even in the first book but was in season 1 right from the get go.

Space is big. It is not easy to accidentally run into Venus when you're aiming at Earth. Hell, it's hard to even hit anything. We've sent spacecraft through "the belt" without even calculating whether they would collide with anything because the odds are so low. The Expanse knows how to do orbital mechanics. Hitting Venus was not a coincidence.

The kiss scene can be explained to certain extent with the context, Julie is confused, does not know where she is, feel abandoned, completely insecure about the situation, Miller gives her comfort and assurance in the scene that she is not alone what ever happens which leads up to the kiss, also Julie is not completely human anymore which using human sensibility for her decision making makes less sense here.

Warning: this comment contains some spoilers through season 3 I actually completely disagree with the claim that Mars betrayed Bobby. As far as I can tell, there was a relatively small cabal within the military that attempted to secure the protomolecule. The ambassador to Earth seemed to be the leader of that cabal. If anyone, other than the ambassador, knew about the plot to secure the protomolecule weapons, Mao still could have sold it to them after the death of the ambassador and the destruction of the Karakum. Additionally, Earth shot first in orbit above Ganymede. I cite the martian confusion about why the battle started and the fact that the UN marines were the first ones attacked on the ground. It makes no sense for the martians to start shooting first when the UN marines were attacked first. The UN almost certainly noticed something and opened fire. Maybe this isn't how it happened in the books, but it is what happened in the series. From what I can tell, the Martian Republic is the closest thing to a team good guy in the series. They are basically Space America being confronted with the sprawling Space USSR and belter terrorists.

Earth is the three time heavyweight boxing champ oldest sibling, Mars is the much much smaller but still pretty scrappy younger sibling. The belt is some morbidly deformed distant cousins from the Ozarks. When it comes to political power and representation Earth is always going to be on top of this heap because of its vastly larger population, followed by Mars and then the Belt as a distant ( basically the edge of the solar system distant) third. Naomi thinking that the belt needed Protomolecule in order to make everybody equal, was a monumentally stupid move on her part Because she basically armed a bunch of hillbillies with The Flood.

I like science fiction movies and series very much and I like this show, too, but comparing it to Game of Thrones is way too much. GOT Is much better made overall. Some of the minuses of this show: where are the (self-concious) robots? Or at least they should explain why we don't see robots everywhere. Is there any possibility to connect the human brain to a computer interface and so on? Do they have very advanced nanotechnology? No mention of that, although I suspect they do have it in Medicine at least. Do they also use quantum computers? No explanation. How has Earth come to be governed by one single government? Again, no explanation. Do they have space hotels around Earth? How come the economy of Earth is not better than today and again why aren't there robots who could build houses and things for all humans? It is not clear to me, but maybe I've missed something. I agree the economy shouldn't necessarily be very performant, but still, no explanation. How advanced are their telescopes and their knowledge of physics and chemistry? Do they have a clue about how life came to be on Earth? Again, no mention. How come Medicine is so advanced but they still have genetical diseases at birth? How come babies aren't all genetically improved before birth - or at least mention why it isn't the case. Are there any cities on or under water on Earth? Maybe no because the ocean 'stinks' - but why aren't they able to solve the pollution? They are at least 150-200 years away into the future. Not to mention the fact that so far into the future the psychology and maybe intelligence of the people should be different to some extent. I like the show and it has many interesting elements. But I would like them to at least mention why history or some things related to science are one way or the other.
@sphaera2520
@sphaera2520 5 жыл бұрын
atllantiss A lot of the points you bring up may or may not be relevant to the overall story. Sure, it might aid in world building but so could a lot of other potentially more plot relevant story elements. I can’t really judge how the lack of extensive world building since I’ve mostly just watched the show and as an adaptation of a book, there’s bound to be differences due to the medium. You also ask how an advanced civilization can have genetic diseases. This requires a lot of scientific understanding but simply put, it’s not that simple. Just because you’re born with the “perfect genome” doesn’t ensure you’ll grow into the “perfect specimen.” Similarly with quantum computers, people tend to think they are something they’re not. Q comps will likely never replace good ol regular computers because of how they are fundamentally dissimilar. They approach computing very differently and as such have their own sets of adv/disadv that make each suited to their own sets of tasks. Some of the points you bring up do seem relevant though. Like does the world have robots and intelligent ai. Thus far it doesn’t seem like it because if they did, there wouldn’t be a need for belters. We’d also see references to any shipboard ai within everyday happenings on said ship, but we don’t. So the obvious thing to conclude is that this world doesn’t have that kind of tech. Doesn’t really explain why, other than belters as a faction are needed for plot reasons. We’re just left acknowledging these things likely don’t exist or aren’t for whatever reason can’t be used in the capacity we’re imagining.
@atllantiss
@atllantiss 5 жыл бұрын
@@sphaera2520 I can understand and agree with you to some extent that the plot doesn't really need many of the things I've said mentioned. But it would help a lot to the overall world building as you say. But I don't agree with you about the 'perfect genome'. It doesn't make sense. I have plenty of medical knowledge to tell you that an unborn baby with a healthy genome (as in no genetic diseases) doesn't magically get genetic diseases (inherited or uninherited) unless some major external factors are present. There could still be some minor DNA alterations during the pregnancy, but those are something else, minor in importance (for example getting a higher chance of developing high blood pressure later in life). We have just started curing some genetic diseases.
@sphaera2520
@sphaera2520 5 жыл бұрын
atllantiss What I mean to get at with the genetics is that this subject is quite complex and we have only just scratched the surface. Only (relatively) recently did we decode human dna. We’ve made some progress into determining where certain genes are located and which ones are risk factors for certain diseases. But a lot still remains unknown and how some risk factor gene develops the disease and overall mechanism of action is still poorly understood. As far as I know we haven’t really unlocked a comprehensive understanding of epigenetics either. We have a base understanding in some areas how gene expression works and how it might be controlled, but those are essentially giant brush strokes in a very intricate and detailed subject. Furthermore there’s random mutations that naturally occur and how the the system self regulates these naturally occurring deviations. Etc etc. All this to say, we don’t really know where the science will lead us in the future. Sure, it’s bound to progress and we will be able to do many things we can’t do now. But simultaneously unlocking new knowledge generally leads to the realization that you’ve only just scratched the surface and there’s still plenty you haven’t figured out yet. I can’t recall where I saw it but there was some quote back in the day where certain scientists thought we were on the cusp of figuring out all of physics. We only needed a little additional refining they thought, how naive they were. In the context of the show, their advancements can allow them to do a lot. We saw them treat deadly doses of radiation among other medical marvels by our current standards. This is similar to how our own modern advancements allow us to do far more than they could back in the early 20th century. If you showed a medical professional back in 1920s what we can do today, I wouldn’t be surprised if they jumped to a similar conclusion you have. “Look at all the tech, knowledge, practical experience you have,” he’d say, “surely you’ve eradicated all forms of disease.” He’d be terribly mistaken. Edit: In a way he would not be entirely wrong (the 1920s doctor), we have learned how to deal with a lot of the issues they were struggling to even comprehend back then. Polio, measles, smallpox, etc are a thing of the past, and unless anti vaxxers get their way so will a lot of other basic ailments. But simultaneously that knowledge came with greater understanding of other things we hadn’t even realize existed. Additionally, our greater ability also lead to the creation of new problems. Extremely resistant bacteria and other problems caused by the very advancements of society.

What's with all the swearing? Completely unnecessary and adds nothing to an otherwise good review.

There was a warning at the start. Sorry you missed it. Personally I don't understand a person who can watch a show where people get shot to death, mutated, mutilated and violated in the most grotesque ways possible yet gets offended by mere words... says something about the nature of a man doesn't it. Violence OK! Curse words NOT OK!

Good exposition - but delivered with entirely unnecessary OTT incredibly sewer mouth language which I find distracting.

Bobbie is overpowered whaman . no way a woman can beat the shit out of men like that . they need to make her use wits and training over power , sorry not believable in a show that's supposed to be more based on actual science.
