What comes after Season 6 of The Expanse? What happens in the final trilogy after the show's final season? Please subscribe! 👉 bit.ly/PetePeppers
The final season of the Expanse has ended, but there are still three more books in the series. This video looks at what comes after Babylon's Ashes and why you should read the books to find out how the story ends for the crew of the Rocinante. The last three books explain more about the protomolecule and the Gate Builder civilization that created it.
In season 6 we met Winston Duarte who led the breakaway Martian fleet through the Laconia Ring Gate. He provided weapons to Marco Inaros and the Free Navy in order to create a diversion. He set up on the planet Laconia in the system of the same name and plans to experiment with the protomolecule and Gate Builder technology.
In the final trilogy of Expanse books, the Laconians return through their Ring Gate.
606 "Babylon's Ashes"
Directed by Breck Eisner
Written by Daniel Abraham, Ty Franck, and Naren Shankar
First aired 1/14/2022
Official Description: Inners and Belters fight side by side with the crew of the Rocinante in a last, massive, desperate battle with Marco and his Free Navy, with the fate of the Solar System, the Ring Gates, and of all humanity hanging in the balance.

@@Josep_Hernandez_Lujan The show follows the first six books pretty closely. If you start at book seven there should be little to no confusion about what exactly is happening a side from two major differences. 1. Alex didn’t die 2. Drummer in the show is a combination of a few different book characters, including Bull, Michio Pa, and Drummer herself. However book Drummer does have a bigger role in book seven.

It’s a blessing that a major streaming service like Amazon saved the show, funding 3 more seasons and leaving creative freedom with the show runners. Still, I’m disappointed they did so little to promote The Expanse compared to other (worse, less expensive) originals that started during the same run. If Amazon had garnered a larger following of Expanse fans, it’s likely they would have signed up to complete the final book trilogy.

I find it highly implausible, that Mars and Earth did not even bother to check the Laconia system for entire 30 years, even though what Duarte and his folks did is basically treason, and they (Earth and Mars) had reasons to suspect Duarte had the last sample of the protomolecule. In the show version this would be further aggravated by the fact they backstabbed 3 capital ships at the ring. So yeah, even if in the beginning Earth was too busy fixing what Marco did - Mars would never had that problem - their surface is not terraformed, so the damage would be minimal.

@@zariumsheridan3488 They sent probes through but never came back and Laconia broadcasted a continuous message of don't come in unless you want to die. Order of priorities and well getting the transport union established, dealing with remaining free navy and the hundreds of other colonies made Laconia low on the priority list. Also helps that they never did anything to draw the attention of everyone else in 30 years.

And hunting down few remaining Free Navy skiffs all 3 of them. We need to send a battle group after each and every one of them. Yeah, definitely we're too busy. And will remain busy for the next 30 years. Also, the traitors are broadcasting a scary "no trespassing" message... oh no... Of course we can't send a fleet. That would be simply impolite, rude even. Yeah, definitely agree. Totally plausible LMAO)))

@@zariumsheridan3488 Laconia has a sixth of the pre war martian navy, an immense minefield on their side of the ring. Earth has tens of billions dead and dying from meteorite impacts, mars is currently having a full review of its entire military, mass unemployment and a seriously depleted fleet. The belt still has terrorist elements and the transport union needs to coordinate control of 1300 star systems. It takes 30 years for the earth and mars coalition to return to pre war strength. More than that, the strugglings of other colonies shows that without sol support colonies tend to collapse. They expected Laconia to collapse on its own. They could not have known Laconia would have the capacity to build warships of game changing caliber. A long campaign into Laconia system just wasn't politically plausible.

People complaining about the ending being predictable sounds like they've already forgotten the lessons from GoT about "subverting expectations."
@bosyber
@bosyber 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this story, and maybe most good stories, isn't really about surprises, but about how humans as a population deal with their world and each other. So a 'predictable' ending doesn't change that their path to it is entertaining, and I'd say that with the premise they set up, it was the only ending that would really make sense, which makes it a _good_ think to me, not a bad thing. As you say, subverting expectation is oversold, especially if that's all you have, it just leads to nonsensical actions to get there to keep the audience 'surprised'.
@robertoesportes3987
@robertoesportes3987 2 жыл бұрын
In fact, coming to think of it, they have already subverted expectations from the moment humanity reached a consensus. The human being would never allow such a thing. Just look at what is happening in Eastern Europe today. It's strange to think that Avassarala didn't strike a blow right there when Holden gave Drummer the title of president when he resigned. Other than that, the series is very good. I'm a fan of any subject that comes to space. I love watching Kerbal Space Program gameplays and I just fell into this series, which respects the laws of physics and, above all, the human being, with all its flaws and qualities.

Another great Expanse vid. I’m a book reader too and I implore fans to read the books. The essence of the story is the same but there are some major differences with characters and character arcs that enhance the story. I know a lot of fans don’t like show Naomi (Dominique Tipper is still amazing) but book Naomi is almost a completely different person. Earth/Mars are more sympathetic and the writers are more critical of the entire Belt and how Belters treat Inners than the show. We get a more comprehensive picture of the true nature of interplanetary relationships that I felt was neglected in the show as well.

Avasarala is in her early 90's at the end of S6, while the actress is in her early 70's. Remember Avasarala talking to Frank DeGraff in the first season? He was talking about something she did when she was 9 yrs old and he was an adult and contemporary of her father. He must have been more than 20 yrs. older than her. So the age thing is no problem.

@@deanadewall8400 Your post makes me think about two things: 1) Out of the Rocinante crew, only 2 people reproduced, but only had 1 child each: Alex and Naomi (Filip Nagata). Although, didn't Alex remarry in the book and have another kid? So if he had 2 parents he replaced them. Naomi didn't & Holden could'nt because he has 8 parents and he's infertile after getting irradiated on Eros. (He has swimmers on ice, though due to his brief service in the military as per its protocol.) 2) Frank killed himself. He looked slightly older than Chrisjen. At a certain age elderliness starts to level off. I believe Ty & Dan used the anti aging thing as a neat plot device. Being 70 and looking 40 is a stretch. Being 70 and looking 50 is more realistic, but this is sci fi after all. Humans do die even if disease has been eradicated. Chronology catches up with them in the end.

I'm doing a re-read of the entire series & I had forgotten how much more horror was in the books, especially body horror. It's also made more clear how much the protomolecule learns, adapts & evolves which is actually terrifying to think about. I was also surprised how soon they set up & foreshadowed the ending of the book series (in book 2) I had just finished Leviathan Falls & went back to re-reading Caliban's War & there it was. I'm looking forward to seeing how much else will be meaningful in hindsight. BOOK SPOILER QUESTION/COMMENT AHEAD The only thing about the ending I found less than satisfying was the Laconia/protomolecule problem. They still had protomolecule & advanced alien tech on Laconia. It seemed if anyone was going to crack light speed space travel, it would be them & they could still be a threat. Or, the protomolecule could just escape & build the gates again. As long as it's still out there, there's still potential danger from the Unknown Agressors.

Imo, another possible hint that they might shorten the time window between the end of the series and the next trilogy is in one scene in the last episode when Clarissa (who is still alive 30 years later, albeit in worse health) is checking her health in an autodoc and sees that her average life expectancy is shown to be about 5 years. So, to me, that was a hint that the continuation might not do the entire 30 year time jump.

I find that book fans seem to be overrating the impact of picking up at book 7. I'm partway into book 9 now - I intentionally waited until the show was done to avoid spoiling the ending - and the only real differences that seem to have mattered so far are: - Alex is still alive - Show Drummer combined book Drummer & book Michio Pa. With those two pieces of information, you can just move forward with the story as is. Actually, even the second piece is kind of irrelevant, since you could just ignore the intermediary presidents and imagine that Drummer has reigned as benevolent dictator the whole time, and it wouldn't change the story. I say this because I find it to be quite a chore to read a book where I already know what's going to happen. The reverse, watching a show based on a book I've read, is a much more enjoyable order to do things in. And since the differences between the books & show seem to mostly fade into irrelevance over the time jump, it seems like a chore not worth doing.

Thank you for clearing that up. That's kinda been my problem. I've started listening to the first audio book but I'm making really slow progress because it's just not that exciting when I already know the most important story beats. And compared to a tv show, which can still impress with audio, visual and acting, a book relies on the story being exciting.

Would you say that it was worth reading the 6 books after watching the show or, do you feel like you would have been fine starting at book 7? I'm reluctant to buy 6 books if it's just for a few more details in the story.
@normalmighty
@normalmighty Жыл бұрын
@@Niklaos The show did diverge from the books in quite a few ways. Characters died in the show that didn't in the books, or they dies at a very different point in different circumstances, and the show merged multiple characters into 1 at times, especially during the book 3 adaptation which was squeezed into half a season. Easier to explain how x established character got there instead of introducing the intended brand new character when it's all compressed that much. I would say book 1 is optional as it just adds details, and book 2 could be skipped if you wanted to, but I would highly recommend at least starting from book 3 so you're not confused about which characters are which.

Really love your videos and appreciate the time and care you put into them to explain and promote this fabulous book series and TV show. I’m into audiobook 8 now and just keep trying to image these last 3 in movie or TV format without Alex. Functionally another character can go through his motions, but the longtime emotional connections between the main characters would be lost which is really sad to me. But I do want to see these last 3 books on screen in some form and if the same people are involved I trust they will weave their same magic to translation this awesome story to a visual medium. Best sci-fi show ever…

Nicely done video. The book series is hands down the best I've ever read. Most series suffer from escalation issues - when the author has to up the stakes making everything and everyone bigger, better, and badder. This one does not, which is in itself a singular achievement. As hinted at above there is a 'rough' transition to the final three books. I started the first one twice before I was able to make the adjustments and once I did I was glad. Those last three books are a whole worthy narrative on their own. The endings for the characters are satisfying. And the TV series consolidate characters and arcs in ways that make it enjoyable on its own. I hope the authors get a chance to bring those final three seasons (not movies, please) to our TV screens. These books and the TV series will be around decades from now.

I picked up with the audio books after the end of the show. The only physical book I read was Nemesis Games ahead of that season being released. The books aren't page turners, I find the audio books similar. The same character thoughts and traits are said over and over and over again, and there are almost never surprises with things happening very predictably. That goes for Persepolis Rising and Tiamat's Wrath, I haven't started Leviathan Falls yet.

Another great video, Pete. I would like to see one that gets into depth on the last three novels as I have just finished them. I went directly from the finale of season six into book 7. I have to admit I tried to start the books from the beginning but I found myself wanting to rush to events that I knew were going to take place and found myself very impatient and couldn’t get into the books. That’s if there was anything wrong with them. Just thought I knew what was coming and I wanted to see that happen on the pages. But the last three books were excellent and I really enjoyed it even though it times the science got a little thick in a bit over my head. And why my imagination did assist me and what was going on in the station, I would love to see a video from you explaining all that. That being said, it was a very satisfying ending although I am really interested in getting my hands on the final novella the sins of our fathers. I’m still going to hold out for you doing some videos on the Apple TV+ series See. Anyway, thank you for all the expanse videos. It was a great ride with you through the end. Hopefully somewhere somehow they decide to film the last three novels and incorporate the pertinent Novelas. This is a great show and I will miss it tremendously. One day I’m going to have to rewatch this show and it’s entirety and then followed up by Battlestar Galactica in its entirety. But in the meantime, thanks for all your work and if you get around to doing a video specifically about the last three books in the expanse, I would love to give those a gander. Of course, I may not have time after Brandon Sanderson announced what he was doing today but I would find a time for your videos. Thanks as always. Peace out.

I appreciate that you didn't give just plot of the books, and that this was really interesting appetizer about them. Because, it would be shame, for everyone who can, not to read the book series (including novellas too, of course). Jefferson Mays does really great job. I read everything first (mostly not English), then listened to his narration doing whatever I was doing (when this didn't need my whole focus). But for people, who don't have time to read, this is excellent alternative. Even for me, not native English speaking person, everything was perfectly understandable.

I finished book nine this morning, Leviathan Falls, and it's a great wrap-up to the series, yet at the same time leaves a lot to be explored, should any of the authors want to do so. At least Alex gets a more fitting end in the books, I'm not sure why they killed him off at the end of the fifth series in the telly show, as it makes no sense at all. And my favorite character turns out to be a guiding force for humanity, which is pretty nice. It's hard to believe that it was over a decade that book one came out, a month before the fifth volume of the Ice and Fire novels, if I remember correctly. When I finished reading Leviathan Wakes back then, all I could think of was, where is this going next?!!?!?

@@CoffeeFiend1 unforutnately hsi behavior (corroborated now far past any doubt) was egregiously bad enough to pretty much force the hand of the writers/showrunner. It wouldnt make any sense at all to try and recast the role for one 6 episode arc. Can Anvar had a huge role involved in helping to get hold of Bezos and push the show continuing; it is truly sad/upsetting that a man who would have been hailed as a hero among the Screaming FIrehawks, is now far beyond mere Persona Non Grata; you might say that we are all trying to forget he ever existed. Its really ironic that if you think about it, books 7 to 9 are really the MAIN story of The Expanse. Everything that happened up to season 6/book 6 is almost prologue/setup. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear they tried to pull a Star Wars and make the later episodes, but then ended up having to write prequels first to fund it, and but then ended up getting stuck starting from the beginning of the prequels. I really want to see them make the next three seasons (or at least the next three books) because so much of what happens in The Expanse doesn't make sense without knowing what is really behind it all. The only thing I kind of fear is that so much of what happens in the books might end up being covered in exposition, because a lot of it is kind of hard to convey in action.

That 3 decade gap could be easily be explored by bringing in younger characters outside of the Roci. The new characters would be from different parts of Sol and from the different colonies. And a tragic event forces them together. Maybe a terrorist attack on civilian transport that is damaged. And these characters are forced to work together to escape and we know nothing about how can they deal with the situation. And they later become instrumental in the rest of the books…

I get, that for now they can't continue the story because of the 30 year time jump, but I think they could make a series in between book 6 and 7. There have to be lots of (little) stories to be told around the Rocinante's crew: visiting all the alien planets, solving conflicts between the different factions. It would be more episodic and less of a connected storyline but I think that could work. Maybe an animated series if it's too expensive to make all the alien planets look good. I was a bit disappointed of Illus in Season 4, it didn't really look 'alien' enough except for the artefacts of course, but none of the animals or plants mentioned in the books. Laconia looked nice though.
