Blue Sky Studios' iconic movie RIO revealed Blu, a Spix's Macaw that was one of the last of his species in the entire world. As it turns out, Rio's story is similar to the Spix's Macaw in real life. The bird went extinct in the wild, but now we have good news outside of the Rio movie!

I think remembered hearing that they DID go extinct shortly after or were on the verge of extinction. But it’s good to hear that they are now making a comeback. And if these birds are able to make it through the jaws of death, then maybe we can hope the same for other endangered animals.

When I was young (when this movie was newly released) I thought they’re based on the hyacinth macaws, the largest macaw species in the parrot world. 2 years ago I’m doing research about birds and found out about what the spixs macaws are and Blu and jewel are the spixs macaws. I’m happy to see a special species of animal managing to make a recovery from close extinction thanks to (maybe kind) thoughtful human hands.

Hey, I thought that too. I had this encyclopaedia and I saw the picture. But it had a yellow ring around the eyes. I re-watched the movie and thought Blue and Jewel were some imaginary type of Macaws 😂 I didn't have internet access then.

I also thought they were hyacinth macaws as a kid. They do look like miscolored hyacinth macaws, really. They mostly lack the white skin on the face that sphix macaws have, there's a bit on their faces that's paler but it looks more like eye markings or even simple color variation.

John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

I’m so excited these macaws are coming back. This is why we need more ACCURATE movies about birds, there are plenty of endangered birds and threats to them nobody has heard about! Here are some examples: Predation by feral cats/outdoor cats on small birds Habitat loss (problem for many birds) Pesticide use which affects many hummingbirds and insect eating birds mainly Unsafe windows birds fly into Illegal torture and murder of small bird species in Europe (there are some KZfaq videos on it, it’s really heartbreaking) Accidental poisoning of birds big and small Illegal shootings of birds of prey (especially golden eagles) because they might be “dangerous to livestock” Littering and other trash Wind turbine companies not taking precautions to prevent birds from flying into them, eagles are at risk Some bird species declining, endangered, or stable but about to start declining: Bewick’s wren (outcompeted by house wrens, predation by cats) Scarlet macaw (shootings and the pet trade, habitat loss) Spix’s macaw (hmmm… I cannot remember but it might have been habitat loss) Whooping crane (habitat loss I think..) Kiwi (predation by cats, stoats, and dogs Golden eagle (wind turbines, poisoning and illegal shootings) California condor (illegal shootings and lead poisoning) Rufous hummingbird (Pesticide use I think… and also predation by cats)

It makes humanity lose even more hope while I’m overjoyed that these beautiful birds are back out in the wild and making a recovery, I’m also wary of all the assholes in the world that would want to profit off of them. I used to have two pet roaches from an extinct the wild species called the Simandoa cave roach, from the Simandou region of Guinea. They were discovered in a SINGLE cave by an American who decided to bring some back to study. Thankfully he did that because the Guinean government ordered it to be destroyed for bauxite mining. Now they thrive in captivity thanks to insect hobbyists. You may think keeping roaches sounds weird, but reality is only ONE percent of all roaches are pests.

Hi, Brazilian here! I always thought the movie was about Blue Parrots (Hyacinth Macaw), not Spix Macaws. Pretty nice to know it was a different species all along! Hyacinth Macaws were near extinction and fortunately have been reclassified from actually endangered to vulnerable since 2018! But it's also nice to remind everyone not to buy from sellers that are not certified by your local wildlife regulators (here it's IBAMA!) and if you already have one be sure to contact a wildlife conservation facility, never just release them!

If there is an endangered animal you would like to save, make a movie about it, why you would like others to help it and it will draw attention to it. KZfaq will help greatly, and Windows Movie Maker and google images can help give you a boost.

It should be said that the threshold of extinction is not every animal being dead, but for there to be so few breeding stock that they will not have a self-sufficient next few generations. Extinct animals come back once in a while because we human underestimated their numbers and suddenly find a whole ton of them somewhere unexpected.

They did go extinct, the last survivor in nature was a male and died in the year of 2000. There was just some remaining alive in captivity. But they had more children and now this project is trying to release some individuals back in the wild. However, there was another blue macaw specie that went completely extinct. I'm from Brazil and I know the entire story

The Lion King helped saved a specific bird as well, but now that bird is going extinct. So you would need many movies about the birds to save them. Once people forget them, they stop saving them.

When I was a kid I watched these two movies, and i loved them, they were colorful and had a simple but funny plot. Then I discovered that after a while, the Blue Macaw were declarated extint, and I was really sad, and angry: humans had vanished another wonderful creature from the world. So you can imagine how HAPPY I am to hear this, and to know that not all is lost. Thank You Vailskibum.
