The Extraordinary Life of Audie Murphy: A Closer Look at A American Legend Hero.
Audie Murphy (1925-1971) was an American soldier, actor, and songwriter, who is considered one of the most decorated American soldiers of World War II. He received every combat award for valor available from the U.S. Army, including the Medal of Honor, the highest military award for bravery. After the war, he became a successful actor and appeared in over 40 films, including his own biographical movie "To Hell and Back." Despite his achievements, Murphy suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and advocated for increased awareness and treatment for veterans' mental health.

All he went through in service I can understand his need for something to help him sleep who wouldn’t all that was in his mind and seeing his follow soldiers die in front of him I wouldn’t be able to sleep either who would. People shouldn’t look at some thing they didn’t live in his shoes. He was one of our great heroes. He deserves all the honors he got and more. I watch all his movies I think he was a great actor and amazing man. R. I.P. Mr. Murphy you are my hero. Know matter what!! 🙏🙌💯❤️

He was a wonderful man. Admitted, the PTSD caused him to do things he might not have otherwise done. I think his song "Shutters and Boards" is how he felt about the aftermath of his marriages and subsequent life. Thank you, Audie, from one Texan to another!

He was also a proud Freemason. Our Brother Murphy was a fellow Mason and I have been fortunate to view his awards, etc. as they are in the Dallas cathedral where my lodge meets. The excerpt below is from an article at the link below it. "In 1955, Audie Murphy became interested in Freemasonry. Encouraged by his close friend, Texas theater owner Skipper Cherry, Audie petitioned and joined the Masonic Order in California. Later he returned to Texas to conduct his 32 degree work where he joined the Shriners. Audie remained active in various masonic events and was a member of good standing at the time of his death. Audie received his first degree in Masonry when he was regularly initiated, February 14, 1955 through the North Hollywood (California) Lodge No. 542 F & AM (Free and Accepted Masons). He was passed to the 2d degree of Fellowcraft on April 4, 1955. On June 27, 1955, he was raised to the 3d degree of a Master Mason. Later, he became a dual member with Heritage Lodge No. 764 F & AM (North Hollywood, California) on May 14, 1956. Audie took his 32d degree work (degrees 4 through 32) at the Scottish Rite Temple in Dallas on November 11-14, 1957 according to records located at this temple. After receiving his 32d degree, Audie was elected vice president of the Thomas B. Hunter Memorial Class of the Dallas Scottish Rite. Audie became a Shriner (Hella Temple, Dallas) on November 15, 1957. Audie was also decorated a Knight Commander of the Court of Honor (KCCH) on December 11, 1965.Audie was made a “Master of the Royal Secret” in the Valley of Dallas, Orient of Texas, on November 14, 1965. Murphy was an active mason for most the rest of his life. He died on May 28, 1971, Murphy was killed when the private plane in which he was a passenger crashed. At the time of his death, he had been recently awarded of honorary 33rd degree. His white cap was presented to his widow, Pamela Murphy. His medals and awards are on display at the Dallas Scottish Rite Temple Museum" dallasfreemasonry.org/audie-murphy-dallas-mason/862

Sorry to say your research is a little lacking, firstly, his addiction to proscription sleeping pills, he locked himself into a hotel room for a week and went cold turkey and never took anymore, and secondly when on the burning tank firing the 50 cal he never passed out plus he was shot in the leg which was on top of the shrapnel wounds he received 3 days after he returned to his troops, he only left the tank after he ran out of ammo.

Audie's westerns for Universal were popular and he made good money. However his addiction to gambling meant that he was virtually broke at the time of his death. We can now see that he was a victime of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which was not well understood at the time.

FYI: A common mistake Is the "Medal of Honor" or the "Congressional Medal of Honor"? The name of the Medal is simply “Medal of Honor” - the word “Congressional” is sometimes mistakenly used because the Medal was created by Congress; however, the Medal is purely a military award.

Per wiki... in1972 The Secretary of the Army, on behalf of DoD, has testified to Congress that the term "Congressional Medal of Honor" is "incorrect", and that "it seems inappropriate to modify the name of the medal with the word 'Congressional' as each award is made in the name of the Congress." As I understand that... the medal should be called, "Medal of Honor"

Hats off to Col Matt Urban who later in The 1980s was awarded another award from WWII which tied him with Murphy. Not taking anything away from Murphy but also recognizing another hero from the greatest Generation. Both are buried in Arlington Cemetery.
