Joseph Boulogne is perhaps the most famous musician and composer you've never heard of. Find out how this trailblazer overcame racism to reach the top echelons of 18th Century France, before becoming a revolutionary.
Animated by Peter Caires. Script by Emma Nagouse, University of Sheffield, based on original research by Dr Olivette Otele, University of Bristol. Academic consultant for the animation: Dr Anna Plassart, The Open University.

Left out that his violin instructor in Guadeloupe was a black estate manager and his period as head (colonel) of Europe's first all black regiment The Legion of Americans aka Black Legion aka Legion de St Georges, where his next in command was another black, Thomas Alexandre Dumas from Saint Domingue (Haiti), who would go on to become a General in charge of 50,000 of Napoleon's troops and who was the father of Alexandre Dumas, French author of The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo

I'm surprised they didn't mention how George's music composition and life inspired Mozart to dedicate a piece in homage to him.

@@luckybag6814Where are these fools getting this misinformation? I know there were to novels written that embroidered the truth. Its so ludicrous because Mozart’s music demolishes any of Bologne's compositions.

Napoleon also had an issue with Alexandre Dumas' grandfather, who was also Black (Dumas is a famous writer who ppl don't realize is of Black lineage). I believe he imprisoned him on an island, but he got away.

Why does the Wikipedia spell it Bologne and not Boulogne? Don't you think "The most famous musician and composer you've never heard" is a little insulting? I've known his music for years, and I'm not that erudite.

@feraudyn Too many ignorant people out there who don’t read books, or look under “B” in the sheet music shop. Then because they’ve never heard of someone they think he’s been “erased”. You’re right, it’s insulting and tiresome. But maybe he’s less known in America; being in with the aristocracy offends their republican sentiments? But this is the BBC, which should know better.

Probably because of the revolution. Everybody around the royal familly, aristocrats and priests was suspect to be an ennemy or had a death penalty. His music was known by the Court. And he was closed to the queen Marie Antoinette. It was probably dangerous for him). He was in jail for a few months). He died in 1799 and I think he was forgotten in the revolution tourments and the napoleonian wars. If he had live more I think he would have continued to compose.

Because while reinstating slavery in 1802 Napoleon decided to dehumanize all black people for political reasons. Erasing the black chevaliers history was part of that.
