1.) it's too far from city center to cause noticeable problems 2.) the amount it pumps out, realistically, isn't a lot, at least compared to many other types of smelters 3.) it's too high in the air for that anyway 4.) it's actually considered by MANY Sudburians to be a type of tourist attraction

it was built this tall because Sudbury is a crater and the previous stack was too short that it would completely pollute the city. In the 1970's you could taste the sulfur in the air

I get all the pros and cons arguments over Super Stack but back when I was a little kid I used to look in awe at the size of it. When we used to drive from Manitoulin we knew we were nearing Suds when we could see Superstack... We'd get so excited.."There's Super Stack!!".... Even when driving back from TO late at night I'd be asleep and my mom would wake me up so I wouldn't miss seeing Super Stack all lit up. I know one day it'll be demolished and I'll be very sad to see it go for my own little reasons. But I understand progress and those that have had to live around it for the past 35 years or so. Thanks for the video.

if you think that was bad you should've seen sudbury 35 plus years ago, used to be all dead vegetation before they raised the height of the smelter. Funny how people criticise mining but enjoy the products that make our lives easier.

during it's construction, a worker near the top had to hold on for dear life as a tornado had hit and he happened to be near the top when it happened, or so my nona who lived in gatchell used to tell me. both my grandfathers worked there for decades. cool video.

There was actually 3 guys up there. Boiler Makers. One of them was a long time friend of the family. When it hit in 1970 the one guy wanted to jump he was so scared and they had to wrestle with him and click on to him to stop him from jumping. They all tucked in and rode it out. It opened the next day supposedly.

In the 60's the view I saw every morning was the 3 small stacks. Then they started building the "super stack". Yes its a lovely video but if you didn't live there in the early days with no "pollution control" you can't ever image what it was like. Our little town Copper Cliff was wonderful, amazing place to grow up in but when the wind stopped blowing that "sulphur" would just fall down to the streets. We were instructed to rush into school or home, close our windows and stay indoor until the air cleared. Mininig also makes what they call "Tailings" a dirty fine sand and when the wind would pick up strong winds, again we would rush into school/home, close our windows and await the "dust storm" to end. I recently experience a "dust storm" in Arizona and it totally reminded me of INCO's tailings. Many men, women and child were inflicted with terrible health issues because of the sulphur and tailings. So where did this sulphur air go to after the superstack was built....it blew further away from Sudbury and contaminated the lakes, rivers and soil for miles around. So basically all the superstack did was move the pollution out of Sudbury to areas of northern ontario that were just forest. It was reported that the highest rate of cancer in men were those who work at INCO. Back in the 70's INCO employed about 20,000 miners and the smelter would run 24/7. Now there are only about 3300 miners. The town has this little creeks...(that's what we called them) and the water in them is always a golden yellow. You never put a foot or touch the water. We were also exposed the another smoke stake across the highway 17W which spewed dirty smoke...its was the Refinery. For those who move to Sudbury, you have no idea nor will you ever know what the people of Sudbury and area had to live thru from the time INCO opened till now. We have environmental regulations and many people spend endless hours monitoring, filing papers for violations yet people still breathe the bad air 24/7. My last few visits have resulted in me getting sick, difficulty breathing, light headed....and its the "sulphur" that's released at night. You would think that after living under it for almost 40 years that I would have an tolerance to it but NOT SO. In fact I have a extremely severe INTOLERANCE to sulphur. I didn't make the choice to live under the 3 and/or super stacks. I left in 1979 and unfortunately I had to continue to expose myself to the bad air/sulphur as my parents continued to lived there until July 2014. Yes its lovely city with Lake Ramsey and Science North, a beautiful university and college, wonder white winters for cross country skiing and other winter sports but the air is still unhealthy. Yes its lovely city with Lake Ramsey and Science North, a beautiful university and college, wonder white winters for cross country skiing and other winter sports. An old irish union buddy you say to you, "Cindy...Sudbury is like Belfast....black rock and bad air".

I was very fortunate that I wasn't affected from working in the smelter. I lived in a rooming house across the street from Wake's Dairy with the big cow on the roof. 6 years at INCO then 1 year had a franchise Radio Shack at Four Corners Plaza then pumped gas for a year for Beaver Gas. I did enjoy Sudbury and was involved in a couple of aircraft clubs. Some times where all the neighbors are now.
