Launched in prototype form at the Turin Motor Show in November 1962, the Giulia TZ shared only a few components with the family saloon it was named after. The letters TZ stood for "Tubolare Zagato," from the tubular chassis frame and the Milanese firm which designed and manufactured the body.
Penned by Zagato's designer Ercole Spada, the Giulia TZ's swoopy aluminum body was designed to minimize drag, and it's characterized by its sharply cut-off tail, recessed and usually finished in contrasting black.
Due to the Giulia TZ's lengthy development and the time it took to build the 100 cars needed for homologation in the GT Class, the model's first complete season was 1964, and it was quite a successful one, with class wins in the Sebring 12h, the Targa Florio and the Le Mans 24h, just to name a few. That year, the TZs even managed two outright wins in the Coupe Des Alpes and the Tour De Corse, yet Alfa Romeo and Autodelta were already onto something new, a second-generation model called TZ2.
The TZ2 was a much more specialized machine, never meant to be sold to the public, with a lowered chassis frame and a sharp new body made from fiberglass instead of aluminum, shaving 40 Kg from the car's weight.

Thank you very much for your kind words. I admit I'm a bit disappointed about my results, given the effort I make to produce my own footage and the genuine knowledge I share. That's partly why I haven't been posting lately, as I'm focusing on activities that make me money. However, I'm grateful for the subscribers and viewers I do have, as you all seem to be enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I may never have a million subscribers, but sure, I have the best ones!

Always a ALFA fan since 1970 when I bought a new spider and kept it for 40 years. Now have a 2015 4C Launch Edition. Had a race car for a while also. I have always lusted after a TZ. When I lived in California I had a couple of friends that had TZs.....the one with the longest history was owned by Marnix Delinius that he drove in lots of vintage events. His was also featured in the sports car series about different marques....in this case the one about ALFA. I remember when John Norman loaned his GTU Transam race engine from his car to run at a Laguna Seca vintage race that featured Cobras. The TZ embarrased the Cobras altough of course having a very good driver helped.

To me the TZ1 and 2 are still the greatest cars Alfa has ever made . That fantastic tubular frame dressed by those georgious Zagato body's says it all . Whit just a humble 1.6 liter engine , capable of over 210 km per hour is still very fast 60 years later ! These are not just cars , these are pieces of art that can also move . They are printed in my hart and mind for ever . ❤❤❤❤❤

These cars grew out of the Giulietta SZ and the Coda Tronca. There was an owner, Fritz Dernberger in Vancouver, BC who had an SZ and TZ1 in his garage around 1981. He raced the TZ at the old Westwood track. They were just as mind blowing then as they are now. He sold them when they became too valuable to keep and enjoy.

There was a man who owned a TZ in a city not far from me 20 or so years ago. He was a member of the state Alfa club, and it would surprise me when I would go to a local Alfa track event and see this incredibly rare car running among the relatively common other Alfas. I thought it was a beautiful car, then I saw a TZ2 (race number 130) at Pebble Beach and was blown away.

Never realised the engine was mounted at an angle. My father was offered an SZ, the 1960s one, back in the 1980s for less money than a nearly new Alfetta GTV6, unfortunately he chose the latter but hindsight is a wonderful thing....

Beautiful cars, videos and your explanation are the best around. Living in the states as a teenager in the 60s then young adult in the 70s most of my friends liked American muscle cars, not me, I liked the Italian style cars. Why are Alfas designed by Pininfarina always much more delicate and prettier than the others? To me they capture the sprit of Alfa the best too.
@Matteo_Licata
@Matteo_Licata 2 жыл бұрын
I’d say that applies in general to Pininfarina’s designs over Bertone’s… The latter tended to go bolder, brasher than Pininfarina usually did

Fantastico. I have to admit being a Lancia man at heart even if I have 4 Alfas as well! The racing pedigree of the Alfas is fascinating. I wish I lived in Italy in the early 60’s to have experienced being involved with these magnificent beautiful cars. The TZ2 is beyond my descriptive abilities. I had a strong thought of why no one has tried to produce them as a modern kit car. Tubular chassis and fibreglass body should make it straightforward I think? I’m sure it could be a huge success. So what has stopped anyone doing it?
@Matteo_Licata
@Matteo_Licata 2 жыл бұрын
A kit car replica of the TZ2 would indeed be feasible for a specialized company… I don’t know why it hasn’t been done already, to be honest.

This car looks just like Carroll Shelby's 64 Daytona. Actually looks like one of GMs badge engineering efforts though I'm sure they aren't related. Love the Bertone body while the Pininfarina body looks wildly out of proportion to the degree I wouldn't have thought they were even on the same frame. The prototype is definitely the best looking of group.
