i had a half-sized G5RV about 20' up, flat. It worked from 6m to 40m. Worked all or the States, QRP from CN89. With the MFJ QRP HF and 6m tuners.

Nice stream. Had to watch later. Internet and cell phones keep going down. I am in Boston NY ,getting that Hurricane from Texas. We have storm damage in NY. Grid down all over. roads blocked. heavy rain and lightning and 2 tornadoes so far. Nice contacts. Manual Tuner gets job done. A VNA will give you more info than SWR. 73

@@temporarilyoffline Now neighbors basement flooded. Grid down ,over 3 in rain so far today. I have weather station. We are now told to give damage reports to NOAA .Local FD coming with water pump. I have no basement. 73

When I use a manual tuner, I tune for max noise before keying up the radio for the SWR check.

Cooper's Rock is a nice park. Been there when I used to live in Uniontown, PA. It's not too far from the WV/PA border.

When in the UK 20 yrs ago I met a ham who knew G5RV and he was clear that Varney designed the antenna for the 20m band, use on another bands is a side effect of its length.

Exactly, asking a fish to climb a tree leaves a negative opinion of the fish. I think it's a great antenna and works well.

Steve your video caught my eye, I have two G5RVs i had one set up in Campo like 4 years ago in pine trees, wind tore it up so i took it apart and rebuild it, now i am setting it up in Arizona, i am running a MFJ 986 T tuner, i just set up the second tower and its hot, can only work tell 11:00, concrete footings and all, running coax underground now to the house, i think it's a great antenna i am going to flattop it between towers, also a vertical, a comet 250, and a Alpha delta off a outrigger perpendicular to the towers, as a inverted vee, anyway i am also in to new antennas this summer 73s AI7VS Dave take care.😊

I was a member of the GB2CPM Club at the Amberley Museum in West Sussex, England… until recently, we were using Louis Varney’s personal Kenwood transceiver. Quite a humbling experience.

I think Louis got a bad wrap when they started marketing his antenna design as an "all band" antenna - its a good antenna, but over-hyped and now despised in my area. Lots of hams use it and it works well - as you heard on stream.

Good review It's amazing how often people state "that won't work", but does lol I use a ZS6BKW antenna which is a modern spin on the G5RV How about doing a comparison? 73 Tim G1HBC

You’re not having to do much tuning on 20m because it’s a 20m antenna. Why people push this antenna as hard on people as they do I’ll never understand and I do own one. I can tune my 40m efhw on all the same bands as I can the g5rv and it seems to work just as good and it easier to set up portable.
