Few artists captured the spirit of THE FACE from the late ’80s to the early ’90s as much as Neneh Cherry.
Cherry’s solo career exploded with her seminal 1988 single 'Buffalo Stance'. Her cocktail of club music and hip-hop amplified her progressive values and a rebellious spirit. As a member of the Buffalo collective alongside the likes of fashion legends Jamie Morgan, Ray Petri and the late Judy Blame, she’s widely recognised as one of the most subversively stylish musicians to ever grace the stage.
In 'Neneh', a documentary directed by Jess Kohl, Cherry is joined by her friend, the filmmaker and photographer Dick Jewell to reflect on the time around her debut album 'Raw Like Sushi'. Robyn, Zadie Smith and Honey Dijon also call in to share their praise.

I remember her first TV appearance, it blew my mind and I instantly knew she was a born star. Always loved her! Mesmerizing charisma, and so much inimitable talent.

if I were a mixtape encompassing all of music, Buffalo Stance would be on me. I loved so much music from my childhood. Good songs are good. Great songs will stay with you for decades, like a warm sweater.

Great documentary! I was 12 when Raw Like Sushi was released. Neneh Cherry was just mesmerising and groundbreaking, she changed my world at the time 😍

NC was n stil is one of my fave icons of the 80s! I loved EVERY song from Raw Like Sushi and that ENTIRE album was my summer anthem in 1989! 😍 apsolutely changed my life! The whole era and music and neneh was a role model for me n stil is to this day!

Neneh is one of my fav. She's so dope. I was 8 or 9 when Buffalo soldier was released, Congolese girl growing up in France. Neneh Cherry was much more innovative than lots of Popstars of the Time like Madonna or even Janet Jackson...I still buy her music. I was so shocked when i went to buy her latest album last year at my favorite indien record store and the girl didn't know who she was ?! Ok she was in her 20s but still...I had to educate her...

I was 8 and that summer 0f 89 was 1 of the best... In UK we had money talks Stevie v, salt and pepper Push it, MC hammer, bass-0-matic fascinating rhythm, Bobby brown,Madonna , Michael Jackson,prince ....but the song of that year was manchild for me ... X

89 was THE year for me! Wen I changed from a young girl playn on my roller skates to dressing n acting in a more "mature" way if ya know wot I mean?! I was almost 16 years old and that summer was one of the BEST of my entire life! Kinda like the lyrics of kissis on the wind I WAS the girl Neneh sung about in that great song!!! 😀😊

Thr era of both 89 and 1990 were THE BEST years of my entire life! Compared to now i had SO much to live for! No phisical health issues and limitless energy! Lookn back the music singing n dancn were in FULL effect for me imitating my idols and the memories! I do a nostalgic moment every now n then n go back n listen to ALL those great songs of THAT era! Wish i cud relive it!

When I see her I can’t help but think MIA was influenced by her and even Lauryn Hill- though maybe not intentional but she seems to be a predecessor

All cool , Neneh Cherry was beauty, style and energy for a moment when I was young. I hugely like her. But it's been 35 years, her music all this time has been..? Ok, let's just say "not hits". I hate the commentator saying she was "queer" because she was..allegedly slightly unusual? It's not clear how, Neneh seems to have been constantly pregnant for a few decades thanks to heterosexual sex. No judgements! But the gay rights movement actually meant something. Stop slapping "queer" on anything that slightly deviates from the alleged norm, it's appropriation.
