Dr. Eric Laywell, Associate Professor at the Florida State University College of Medicine, discusses the pathway and function of the often confusing cranial nerve VII, aka the Facial Nerve. Dr. Laywell explains the four different types of innervation this nerve encompasses and demystifies the series of bony tunnels it traverses.

Please upload other cranial nerves if you have. This is one of the best animations videos I have seen on the internet thus far. The quality of drawing, depicting, and explaining really helped me out and I know many others are looking for external resources for help. You would really be paying it forward for future physicians or science lovers :) Thanks

I had TN for 17yrs. in all 3 nerves, like having a baby through your nostril every 10 seconds. A ton of clueless docs & 2 Gamma Knife surgeries later - I'm good now! No meds helped... feet in hot water seemed to help temporarily. Crying made it worse. Don't give up hope - believe you will beat this!!!

I loved this presentation, thank you.. I'd like to clear a thought of mine in reference to the General Sensory Afferent .. I thought its 2nd order neurons were located in the Pons' principal trigeminal nucleus, not in the nucleus of the Solitary Tract, used for taste.

Hello and wonderful presentation. Very educational! I had a question about the accuracy though. According to Board Review Series of NeuroAnatomy, it mentions that the facial nerve has 5 functional components and that fifth component is "GVA (General Visceral Afferent)" whose cell bodies originate in the geniculate ganglion and innervates the soft palate and adjacent pharyngeal wall. They also mention that THIS is the one that has no clinical relevance; not GSA. In your presentation, you said that the one without clinical relevance is GSA said at time 1:28 and 3:50). As you can see this doesn't add up. Could you comment if this is an error or clarify the role of GVA? Thanks!
