I’ve been going through Famke movies lately. I dunno why. 90s nostalgia maybe. Anyway, the thought that keeps crossing my mind is how impressed I am with her English. Not hers so much as Dutch folks generally. I speak English, Italian, French (and read Ancient Greek and Latin … forgive the pedantry), and I have to say, I’m endlessly amazed at the talent Dutch folks have for mastering other languages. Famke’s English is flawless. More than that, it is perfect down to the region she lived in when she perfected the language, California - specifically what’s called ‘urban California English’. As someone who pays inordinate attention to language use (due to both native interest and education), I could not pick her out as a non native speaker of that dialect if I had hours and hours of her English speaking ‘on tape’. While this is a hell of an accomplishment for any individual, this capacity for mimicking native speech and acquitting a native vocabulary and idiom, is something I’ve experienced time and again with the Dutch. Starting with my mistaking more than one ‘shop girl’ in Amsterdam for fellow midwesterners (north & south midland speech patterns) when I first visited Amsterdam and The Hague in the mid 90s, to the perfect accent (accents, really) of Michiel Huisman, I’m endlessly amazed. I realize that 85 percent or so of the Netherlands’ population speaks English. That they grow up with it - with American television and movies (and tourists) especially. And I realize that Dutch is probably closest to English (historically, English comes from and is closest to Netherlandish Germanic - Jutish, Frisian, etc.). But their French, German and Italian are often impeccable as well. I have Swiss friends who swear they’ve met more than one Dutch that speaks perfect Genevan French and Bernese German. Probably Ticinese Italian as well for that matter, though I don’t know anyone from that part of Switzerland to corroborate. Anyway, I’ve gone on long enough. I say all this mostly as a pean to a linguistically remarkable nation (and woman!), but also to see if there are Dutch folks out there who can help me understand how they’re so good at learning to speak like ‘others’ that ‘others’ regularly mistake them for their own.

You could always tell when someone was infected in this movie, bc they would become REALLY suspicious of anyone not infected out of nowhere w zero evidence, and anyone who was infected...they didnt question or distrust at all. Basically symbolizing the entire alien group was connected and had the exact same thought patterns.

Jesus Murphy , Famke is beautiful in this movie. The eyes she gives him at 1:10 after she stiff palms him in the chest..... Fire. So expressive and passionate and equally Very Scary. Those are the eyes of Contempt ,from a woman, that would Scorch the proverbial Earth. Famke Janssen is an actress who nails the Cold,Righteously and Vehemently Infuriated Hard Glare in her films , much Like Vivian Leigh used to. Straight Legend status. Xenia isn't dead.... I love Josh Hartnett and Hyde from that 70's show. I'm sorry but the name of this video was The Faculty 'Fairy Dust' and she clearly said "wonder dust", not fairy dust. This was my absolute favorite movie from the time I turned 13. I watched it so many times. I thought Josh Hartnett was so hot in this movie and was in love with him for so many years from this movie. Now I look back on it all these years later and I'm like oh wow his hair is all messed up and I used to love it, but that's not in style anymore. I loved getting to see Elijah Wood so young again. He was amazing in this movie. I'm glad he played in it.
