In this video, I'll teach you the "Fair Lady Hand" of tai chi. This is a VERY important move that you should learn if you want to improve your tai chi skills.
100 Days of Tai Chi is a series of videos designed to help you learn tai chi at home. This hand-paced form of exercise is known for its health benefits, including improved balance, flexibility, and posture. If you're interested in learning tai chi, then start with the "Fair Lady Hand" video and progress from there!
Today's new move is called Brush Knee in a Twisted Step - so we get to learn what a "Twisted Step" is. We've also got viewer Q&A - this time about something called "Fair Lady Hand."
Want to come work with me? It's easy - you can book a free session at TaijiFit.net/guidance. It's never too late to make a difference (look at me - I'm 60!) Any challenge can be overcome when we face it together!
Other programs at TaijiFit Academy begin with the FREE membership at TaijiFit.net/free. See you soon!

It always looks so easy when David does it. After repeated viewings and numerous attempts at the move, I sort of get it, mostly due to David's patient detailed style of teaching. The little right arm loop seems to be my key. When I get that, it works, if the arm loop doesn't happen right.... its a crash bang boom into oblivion... Seriously, these videos are excellent for us beginner neubies without a clue, particularly if there is some reason you have to hang around the house. Good stuff. Thanks for doing this David.

I'm a piano teacher and something helpful for students to know about the hand is this. If you look at the back of your right hand and observe your thumb, notice if your thumb forms an "L" shape or if it naturally falls into a "J" shape. If you are a J shape and you try to copy your teacher to create an L shape you will might produce strain. David Dorian Ross has a relaxed hand because he has the L shaped hand by birth. Study your own hand and do what is comfortable for your hand.

I have a bit of shoulder impingement in my right arm as the result of a motorcycle accident . Over the last two years The hand movement for the White Crane Spreads Wings and the Brush Knee are affected by this. This is a good thing. It means that these movements will work that issue which seems to be the solution to that problem. Especially since the movements are not forced. PT has greatly improved my arm so I know that exercises that affect it are good for it. I'm looking forward to the improvement I will gain.

Hi David Many thanks for the 100 days series. It would have been even more helpful if there was a reprise of the last few moves on each day because backtracking on youtube invariably gets me lost. Cheers Kevin

Thank you for the great lessons Mr Ross. If I could join your daily classes in USA I would but I live halfway around the world (a lot closer to China, actually). Though I am more than 2 years late for taking part in Q&A I would still like to put my query. Is there any left hand & right hand orientation in Taichi. I am left handed and I find the routine favours right handers a little. Am I wrong?

Hi I find it very difficult as when you put your right leg forward I have to put my left leg forward mirroring you. When you turn it gets worse than ever. Can you help please.

Hi DDR- I'm loving the question of the day with each lesson. Just rewatched the day 6 Brush Knee Push/Brush Knee In a Twisted Step because I have noticed the bottom hand seems to brush the knee at what appeared to be hip level and did not "hug the knee" as it does in the 24 Beijing Short Form...with application in mind (only to generate a visual picture in my mind of what is happening) I'd love to know why it would come around with the waist turn at a higher level?

It may be too soon to address this layer...no worries if you would rather wait. If you could confirm that the bottom hand stays at hip level and does not drop lower to "brush" across the knee that would be wonderful & I will practice it that way for this form. I am truly grateful for your gifts of time and encouragement.

I was taught (previously) to begin this movement with a small rotation to the left first, before turning to the right. Is that optional? Stylistic? Thanks!

Hi Orna - I love your question so much I want to use it for Wednesday's Question of the Day, so be sure to watch Wednesday's video. Can you tell me a little more, tho? Have you had a bad knee experience already with Tai Chi? Or do your knees already hurt with some activity?
