Manowar will always be a great band. They never fell (all bands have problems). In Europe they are practically likened to that of Beatlemania. Every festival they play they are the mandatory headliners. They have conventions all over the world. Every record was true to form HEAVY METAL. Millions of fans have Manowar tats. In Brazil they headline over Slayer. In the 90's they were one of the only bands that had the balls to still call themselves HEAVY METAL (and they were/are ). Every show they play they bring a custom P.A. They've literally lost money just to play in areas as a special treat to their beloved fans. Better known as Manowarriors. If that's failure or a down fall? So be it. When the record companies offered more money to change their style they said f$%k you and became even more successful. HAIL AND KILL !!!

I've recently seen them some years ago in Berlin in a small club and they sucked. Taking any pitcures was strictly forbidden and Joey spoke more in between songs than he played. Content-free speaches like "f*** politics, f*** school, bla bla bla ..." for over several minutes ever two songs or so. They rather should have played their material. It was maybe one hour of music for way too much money. And I've seen hundreds of other concerts of small and huge bands alike to have a comparison.

They have had enough success to retire comfortable. There attitude is what got them where they are today. They still have many loyal fans all over the world. What really annoyed me was them doing a "The Final Battle" tour starting in 2016 and advertising it as their final tour and the band ending after it's over. The actual wording in the original 2016 press release was: "The Gods And Kings Tour was a groundbreaking moment in our career. The stage, sound, video and you, our fans, were magnificent! Coming off such an amazing tour it was clear that the next time we must go even bigger and beyond anything we have ever done; something that will fulfill every Manowarrior’s dreams. Then that will be the ultimate moment to say Thank You and farewell! The Final Battle will begin in Germany and take us all over the world to say goodbye to all of you.." Eric Adams also said in an interview "I'm gonna miss the big stage - of course I am - but all good things have to come to an end at some point." Then they milked this "farewell" tour for all it was worth. It went on for 3-4 years, only for them to finally end it and then announce a 40th Anniversary Tour! When Joey was asked in an interview about the fans thinking the band was breaking up, he responded: "We never announced the end of MANOWAR; we didn't even plan to never tour again."
@davorbrijacak
@davorbrijacak 2 жыл бұрын
Many old legendary bands are doing it nowadays. It has to be a good marketing strategy, many people go out of their way to see the band before they "break up", thinking this is their final chance to do so. I even remember Judas Priest saying that in 2011 but still they play live and record new record, even if Tipton can't so Andy Sneap tours instead. Deep Purple was supposed to have a final tour in 2017 yet they still play, despite saying how they would only do studio records. I know you can change your mind but this seems like a bullshit marketing strategy.

OK, this was my personal experience w/ Manowar, as a fan... I had heard for decades that they were 'the loudest band on Earth'... I bought all their CD's and DVD's and was crushed every time a new record emerged that they did not tour the USA. Over the years, I had seen Dragonforce, Mayhem, Sabaton, Enslaved, Amon Amarth, Death Angel, Behemoth, Arch Enemy, Cannibal Corpse, Nightwish, Slayer, Exodus, Motorhead, Machine Head, Napalm Death, Blind Guardian, Epica ... old and new metal bands, crank out records regularly and tour the States relentlessly... playing clubs for little money, and then the ball gets rolling and they move up to bigger venues and successful tours as they build up their fanbase. Finally, Manowar announced a US tour in 2014 for a handful of shows... I paid $100 for my ticket and was jazzed they would play the entire 'Kings of metal' album. I expected them to blow me away... this is what I got: 1) No opening band, and Manowar barely played 1 and half hrs. 2) Security would not allow any photographs. 3) The band's volume from the stage was so low that I didn't even need earplugs. 4) Joey DeMaio ranted on stage for a few minutes bragging about Manowar to an underwhelmed crowd. 5) None of the members would meet the fans after the show - a lot of post-concert grumbling... 6) Adding insult to injury, later US shows were cancelled. At the end of the day, it was a very deflating experience w/ a band I had been a fan of since the 90's. In contrast... I saw Machine Head in 2015 pack the same venue, play 20 songs over 2 hours and kept the crowd engaged and moshing and they charged less for than half of what Manowar did. No matter who is in the band, Robb Flynn has proved himself to be a dedicated metalhead who caters to the fans. It seems more like Manowar cater to themselves and the fans enthusiasm is expected, not earned... Amon Amarth has been crushing the States for decades and now, they are one of the biggest metal bands because of their sheer workload and dedication to making metal and fans happy.

Ross said he was ASKED to leave, so basically fired by Joey before the Kings Of Metal tour started. And Joey concoted the silly story that Ross went to pursue blues. The same stuff happened in 1990 with Scott, and Joey peddling story about Scott's kid being sick. Unfortunately, Scott backed up Demaio's untrue version in 1999 Hell On Earth video, saying that he got back to Manowar after his kid recuperated. Only in his 2010 interview he set the record straight that his son had never been sick in the first place. So it was all a Joey's scheme to keep fans in the dark and not rebelling

@Mike I always thought that was the reason why Ross was a great guitar player but yeah the bluey licks were always gonna very limited, Joey even in the early days always had a knack for playing really fast even in the early days and Ross wasn't capable of that, I think Joey wanted somebody who could shred in the same pace that he could, It seems like every metal band in the late eighties had to have a shredder guitar player

@Mike I think Dave played that well on the record cos Joey runs the show. His vision sustained Man0waR ! Dave has produced nothing of much value since Man0waR. If Eric went solo, he probably wouldn't have survived without Joey's songwriting prowess. No Man0waR member did that well outside the band and that tells us what a tight ship Joey runs and how instrumental he is for the sound of Man0waR.

@Mike a lot of people say that the best album but there's too much that they had to do to get that album literally had to get rid of half of the band to get that fast driven style and they never really touched on any songs from that except for Metal Warriors, Rhino was a phenomenal drummer he was perfect for that band and then when they got Scott back and they got Karl Logan it's like they couldn't be fast but they could still be technical, but obviously Scott couldn't play that fast, I think that's possibly why the modern Manowar albums sound kind of odd

Karl was not a sex offender. He made no offence onto someone. He didn't know any of those people including those responsible. What exact harm did Karl commit is the question? It should make a huge difference to his jail sentence as to how long he had child porn on his computer while knowing. The quicker the authorities found out the less the jail sentence should be. Did they find out a month later, 6 months later or a few days later? Because the sooner the authorities found out, the better for the kids if they can be located. If possible the authorities can trace the video to the original source, find and locate the kids and arrest those adults responsible. Karl was not responsible for the actions of others but how long was he knowingly in possession of such porn because he was suppose to report it immediately in order to protect the kids.

When I saw them in 2005, Joey DeMaio went on a long rant about how the club owner was a piece of shit. From a business perspective I imagine someone like Joey must be a pain in the ass to work with. The other ironic thing is that for a band that sings about metal brotherhood, they seem to be completely disconnected from their peers in the metal community.

I think their problem is/was that the whole schtick was a bit too buffoonish. Here in Europe in the 80s with our limited English it was great to sing along to Carry On, Black Wind Fire and Steel and Brothers of Metal. Simple, catchy, epic. But the band never evolved thematically. My first ever concert was in the Louder than Hell tour when they came to my home town in Spain. It was disappointing, the band was great, but the show was short. When they came to Spain later, nobody wanted to organize trips to their gigs in nearby places. The production of their first ever live record, Hell on Wheels, is truly atrocious and I was so disappointed when I bought it that I was put off for a long time.

One of the reasons why Ross was fired, was because he was disagreeing with Joey about this alienation from the scene. Joey did that in purpose, Ross did not like it, so he had to go. Manowar claimed he left in his own, but it's a lie. One of many.

Also the subject matter and lyrics are such shit now. The early stuff was so cool...Guyana, Battle Hymns, Shell Shock, Violence and Bloodshed. Now the songs all have to mention gates of Hell, rise from hell..blood on my Steel, you will die, go to Valhalla...all means nothing, no point. Those new final battle songs are a fucking joke. Yes. I very much liked their mythology/heathenish side of lyrics, and the Illiad on ToS was the last great hurrah in this way. After that it felt like they brought more Odin and more Asgard and more Valhalla but as if quantity was the objective. I miss songs like Thor as especially Mountains. Manowar were my "gateway drug" to nordic mythology and I became Asatru, discovered all the heathen metal starting with Bathory, there is no contest on the lyrics depth for me. The retail version of The Lord Of Steel sounded like that because they had to somehow reduce that awful Joey's bass sound everybody was complaining about without remixing the whole album. As long as Manowar released great albums every couple of years they could get away with being full of themselves (or that image). But once the albums started to come out more rarely and have more filler I kind of started to shy away a little. When I discovered them with the Hell of Steel it's probably the strongest album experience I've ever had and it saddens me a little that that same band released an album as bland as the Lord of Steel. That being said, Sword of the Highlands is a truly great song so Joey can still give us a golden nugget every now and then.

OK, so I watched the vid. I was right: as I said in my 1st, longer comment, this guy didn't say a word about the fact that Americans don't like traditional metal or "true metal," in de Maio's words. Also, here's a logical fallacy: he says that Manowar supposedly had an arrogant attitude towards US bands, which alienated them from the US fanbase. But, if they were arrogant & difficult to work with, would they *not* also be difficult to work with in Europe? The argument makes no sense at all. And even if it was the case that they were hard to work with, with US bands, why would this affect how fans viewed them? The fans would not know anything about the behind-the-scenes happenings between bands, anyway. Like I said, my 1st comment explains the real reason why Manowar have a far smaller fan base in the US that the rest of the world: Americans don't like classic metal, but thrash and blues. manowar's sound is "too european" for the Americans.

you make some great points but just imagine seeing Manowar tour with someone like Symphony X in the states for a 40 dollar ticket (at most). Never would happen, and that's my point, they could have allowed themselves to be more humble as far as their productions go (not that their productions are THAT extravagant) and alas, had a better REPUTATION in the us, not just being able to sell more tickets or albums, etc. You talk to Ross himself and he will acknowledge some of these mistakes as well. They still make good music; their own anti harmonic way. Not every single piece is a diamond for sure. This goes for any band and artist ever walked this earth. They are all simple humans. It is the fans and anti-fans that , hillariously, exegarate anything out of too much love/hate. The attitude of the musicans part is mostly for the show; entertainment. (Fix match) You know at many videos and shows Joey makes fun of their concept and even himself. Any entertainer who roleplays to be an artist does that. I laugh even harder when some bozos show up and tell how mature a musician is or judge the quality of the music by how many notes, tabs and the number of instruments are used and how hard it is to play. Nothing is hard to play with proper practice. The music industry is business. Seriously I am an ancient rock and metal fan and musician myself (listening to and practicing many other type of music aswell), but what I think is the fan/anti-fan community (at anything not only music) is the true ass. The bands are only the entertainers and what they do is only roleplaying. It is show business. They are all ordinary guys.

Sure, they were targeting bands like Poison and Warrant, but they were never heavier than any of the big 4. Now me, I prefer Manowar to thrash, because I like the melody that is still there. But Fighting The World, while still good, seemed like a bit of a sellout. And Kings of Metal, which I like better, also sealed their attempt at commercial success. Triumph of Steel was an attempt to get back to heavier music, but that went right out the window with Louder Than Hell.

Unlike Europeans, Japanese, South Americans, etc., Americans don't "get" or like trad, classically-influenced metal; they like thrash & blues-based rock. That's why, even though just as good as Judas Priest, maybe even better according to some, Iron Maiden is just not as popular in the US as Priest. And where Maiden *is* mentioned, it's almost ALWAYS thru a comment of this sort "Yeah, how about that Number of the Beast?!!" And my (hypothetical) reply always is: "You mean, this is the *only* album you know out of a discography of 16 albums, many of which are far better & more "true metal" than NOTB?" This is a very great mystery, since on the entire *planet* (except for US & its blind follower AUS) the opposite applies: Maiden is almost universally considered the 'best of all time.' But JP are more liked in the US bc they have a more bluesy/thrashy sound, whereas Maiden have a classical sound, coming from the Deep Purple school of rock/metal. Speaking of Purple, again, in *every* country except the US (and its brainless, nondescript copycat, Australia where i sadly reside) it's practically an unwritten law that Ritchie Blackmore is the best guitarist of all time, the man most responsible for inspiring what we now know as "metal solos" & the NWOBH sound in general, as well as power metal, ultimately. The US fans seem to not comprehend this objective truth, and instead, focus, again, on blues-based guitar heroes, such as Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, etc., while completely throwing Ritchie under the bus (Note: Page is a God & Zeppelin is best band ever, so I'm not anti-Zep, but they are explicitly not metal in the least, but hard rock). Even if RB's sound is more "metal" & by far the most technically proficient rock/metal guitarist of the 70ies, if not ever. And since, ofc, Manowar is the most "European" sounding metal band that America has ever produced (if you didn't know, upon first hearing them, you'd naturally assume they're a German or a NWOBH band or something) their sound is naturally not going to be as popular with the American metal audiences, who nauseatingly have a strong liking for "false metal" (i.e. anything BUT the trad NWOBH sound or the classically-themed Deep Purple sound, which later spawned power metal, another inexplicably "hated" genre in the US). This IS the explanation (I know cause I'm European who now lives in AU & have compared the polar opposite metal scenes in both countries). I haven't even watched the vid yet lol, but I imagine he doesn't even mention any of this stuff.

Iron Maiden play relatively large places like Tinley Park Holywood Casino (2019) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_Casino_Amphitheatre_(Tinley_Park,_Illinois), and last time had not too many openers, while Judas Priest usually tours with package tours like last time with Deep Purple. I agree that the type of metal you describe is not as popular in the US, but I think Manowar could've been a larger band for that exact style considering their longevity and choices they made back in the day.

i fuckin BLED this band for the first four albums... and I'll tell you why they arent well respected within the metal community anymore firstly - going way back to 87.... the "Fighting The World" record was a grasp at capitalizing on the hair metal nonsense. I don't blame them - it was a weird time for metal. Even Ozzy was frosting his hair and writing ballads with Lita Ford, the boys from Priest had fuckin perms...... when atco (Atlantic Records subsidiary) signed them and they did "Fighting The World", they scaled things down for more mass appeal. There were still some decent songs on the album - I like "Black Wind Fire and Steel" and "Violence and Bloodshed", and I dont blame them for wanting to make some profit, but fuckin "Blow Your Speakers"?? it's shit - compare it to fucking "Each Dawn I Die".... When "Hail To England" was out - you could compare them to the heaviest of metal bands - Slayer, Venom, Maiden, etc. Not that the music sounded the same, but in terms of image and material. They became fuckin cartoon characters... I remember being 17 and seeing the cover to "Fighting The World" and fuckin WINCING in pain. Awful. How do you go from "Bridge Of Death" to that fuckin narrated "Grandfather, tell me a story" shit? And once they tried to soften it for mass appeal, there was no going back, and they became a bit of a novelty. I remember Gene Simmons talking about what happened to Kiss, and why they finally took the makeup off - because Gene said he was looking out into the audience, and it was mostly 8-9 year old kids. Joey failed to say much about the passing of Scott Columbus and the fact that Karl Logan is a pedophile. He's so interested in trying to protect the "image of the band" that he spins everything like a government official. They stopped touring the states - i get it - when it comes to metal, there is a lot more money to be made in Europe - where you can still play for thousands of people, as opposed to playing to a few hundred at a club in NY, but you should keep the home fires burning. I still love them, still listen to them often, they were the soundtrack of my youth...... but they lost the hardcore metal heads when they started to do songs like "Courage", which is a nice song i suppose, but it sounds like it should be the soundtrack to a fuckin Walt Disney movie. The real metalheads could no longer relate, and , at least in the states, they were STILL a bit too heavy for the mainstream hair metal Bon Jovi/Poison crowd. Neither here nor there. First four albums are fuckin metal gold

As much as I agree with your post, I strongly believe Joey does nothing without reason, reasons we will not know or we don't really have to know... as long as the music can speak for itself. Joey is a businessman and you need one to sustain a band. Say what you want, they wouldn't be able to sell these big venues if it wasn't for Joey and his ideas. Remember, a band cannot just bank on old fan base, they have to create new ones to survive. Songs like "die for metal" do nothing for me while it's a HUGE hit for younger fans

Demaio lives off Manowar, that is common knowledge. They could have more money if they didn't invest in their own gear for sure, and they'd have more fans if they didn't always insist on using their gear. As for their popularity in the US, that is less interesting to me than what happened after 2002's Warriors of The World, which was a huge comeback for them and did especially well in Europe. Rather than capitalise on its success, they released a concept album 5 years later on their own label that divided their fans. They also had a much publicised legal feud with Rhapsody, which didn't help their reputation at all. I also suspect that many fans didn't appreciate the inflated prices they were asked to pay for Magic Circle products either. Having said all that, Manowar are obviously doing something right to still be around after 40 years. There is no doubt that they have made some strange business decisions, but at the same time, some of those decisions are also responsible for their longevity.

I grew up on Manowar, tabbed half their stuff on the internet as I learnt to play with Ross, David and then Karl but it was the internet that broke them for me. The Stay true to Yourself message (He who refuses to take part in modern mediocrity...) was false, and it became apparent that Manowar was a corporation leading the band, not the other way around. True testament to this is, Ross came to Australia, and only now Joey is considering it cause Ross's tour was a success. The closest I got was Ross at the local, but as always an emergency popped up that stopped me from my chance... I like the song El Gringo; are they really lawless misfits or just businessmen in Chaps? Maybe its Ye ole adage... They lie so much, they believe themselves...

Big Tiny he doesn’t want to promote the band anymore because he’s afraid they might get bigger than manowar. As for the Asgard saga and hammer of the gods i believe something didn’t go through because of Joey. The Asgard saga is written by some author/writer and Joey wanted full control of it. Don’t quote on me about this but I did read about this years ago even before the lord of steel. As for the lord of steel I think they did a pretty good job on it except for the bass sound that sounds like a band I don’t remember their name they from the 90s. Other than that the album has that raw sound and Karl’s riffs and solos has a lot of flavor. I believe manowar has come to their demise because lack of inspiration and lack of humbleness on Joey’s behalf. I strongly believe Joey should of bring back Ross and David back for their final tour however Joey wants all the glory to himself. Too bad.

Like when Demaio infamously said in the late nineties, "we've been on 17 record labels!" as if this is a point of confidence with regards to staying true to their music. Of course, behind the scenes, being kicked off 17 record labels could be because you're a lousy businessperson when it comes to music, and labels tire of you quickly lol. Not saying of course that most record labels aren't piles of shit (the music industry being infamous for predatory assholes preying upon musicians money wise) but still I think a point can be made

I had to stop listening at the 17 labels parts. Wow we have been on 17 labels, OK I get that. But then you made the assumption that they were dropped. How do you know that? Do you also have breakfast with them? Give me a break.

What do ukeep on saying Man? Even though they arent that popular these days..theyre still more Metal..than i bet..any new metal bands youre listening to right now..besides they have made their mark and have lots of good killer hits..none could match the power that the Gods gave to Manowar..true kings of metal..unlike all crap new trying to be metal crap like Slipknot and others..id stick to the Kings of metal..the real brothers of Metal!

I love Manowar and will for the rest of my life, I have the sign of the hammer tattooed on my right shoulder and they have made an indelible mark on my life. That being said, I feel that they, like anyone else, isn't above criticism. I feel like it's a case of squandered potential, especially with their recent career moves, and missteps.

Karl Logan is not a harm to society and is not a sex offender. You can't hold Karl responsible and punish him for the actions of others. Although no one is suppose to download or view illegal porn, but it was made available online by others that may of tempted him to see it or download it if in fact he did. Arrest the ones who held the video camera and take the illegal porn away but Karl may not deserve jail time depending on the content and other factors. He may be guilty of failing to report that illegal video or image to the police depending on the content if it was his duty to do so to allow the authorities to investigate, if it wasn't his duty to report it then he did nothing to anyone. I like Manowar ALOT, and I want him back in the band. HAIL HEAVY F'ING METAL.

manowar arent a marketable band and never will be they play music that is not for the masses unfortunately now that they are older and looking to retire try to make as much money they can. this video says nothing at all worth listening or seeing just another manowar hater

@@themadmattster9647 hi first when did you have the tattoo and second if you are a Manowar fan why all this irony and DeMaio ridicule. finally, what are you trying to prove in your video, how did Manowar fail? I don't understand, did you want them to be commercially successful like Metallica arent you satisfied by their album all these forty years, I just don't get what are you trying to establish.

@@vielnast3628 So you can't like a band and criticize them at the same time? You absolutely have to worship them even if some of their decisions they did are really questionable. Being commercially successful isn't necessarily a bad thing, these are musicians who deserve to earn decent money. DeMaio deserves all the ridicule because he's way too cringy and obviously an asshole to fellow musicians. Even if this whole "true metal" talk is their schtick and essential part of their image not to be taken seriously, that Joey guy has become a self-parody.
@vielnast3628

@@davorbrijacak critisizing is way different from making fun of. De maio is not a full and although he may seems so to you it is because you hate manowar and deep inside yourself. Its very different to love a band and listen to their music to worshipping them. Maybe you never really listened to them just worshipped them yourself and when they did something different than you liked or expected you just unleashed so much hatted. Well Manowar cannot be harmed by the likes of you and their epic metal music will live forever!

@@vielnast3628 I like bunch of their stuff, especially Ross the Boss stuff, and I always made fun of their over the top image, but that Lord of Steel album, rerecordings of two classic albums, Final Tour that never ends, DeMaio being a total asshole and weirdo, and finally Karl Logan a paedophile, that deserves a critic.

Love epic metal , Manowar are theatrical.They should have worked on a musical in their prime.I believe that Zionist - established record companies in the US have never forgiven the vast success of two ( Eric and Joey ) Italian Catholic boys.Joey was ( maybe he is still into ) a member of the Knights of Malta - a division of Templar Knights.
