We took this video footage at the East/West German Border near Hof, West Germany two days after the Berlin Wall came down. It shows the East German (GDR) citizens streaming into West Germany in their Trabants (East German-made cars), most for the first time in their lives. The emotions of both the East Germans coming into West Germany and the West Germans welcoming them is visible in the faces and voices of the people in the video.
The West German government gave each East Germany visitor 250DM in "begruessungsgelt" (welcome-money) since the East Germany currency was worthless in West Germany and otherwise they would not have been able to afford to visit. The line outside the Red Cross building is for East Germans to collect their money.
The normally high-speed German autobahns were crowded with the slow-moving traubies, making for many traffic jams and very unsafe driving conditions.
All-in-all it was a tremendously emotional and moving event to witness.

The description is a must read! And isn't this just crazy? Imagine how excited these people were to experience freedom...

Excellent point, I picked up on that as well, since quite a few color movies recorded back then looked like something out of the 1930's, despite only being 20 years old when the video was put together.

33 years later; at least the Trabants have a hardcore 'cult' following, since in a way' they're now 'cool'.....those little sedans come across as now having a 'Hipster' ride.

@@andre_roim0511 Volgas' also have a following and are starting to fetch some serious $$$, especially the rare KGB 'Chasers' with the Chaika V8. Admittedly, a lot of 4 banger 'retail' sedans were converted over with said Eights but, still.

Wow, amazing footage. Thank you for sharing. It seems nearly all other footage of the DDR is in black and white (I guess that's all they had access to), so it's wonderful also that this is in colour.

I watched this video and couldn't help but smile. The excitement and then relief that East Germans must have felt crossing into West Germany must have been something else!

The Wall 'fell' two days prior; and the vibe was that East Germany's time was already coming to the end. I'll admit that both the BundesPolizei and the VolksPolizei handled this sudden change rather well.

7:34 That Lada was produced for 22 more years with the same design. It is very ironic that a car that experienced a historic event 30 years ago can still be easily found in Russia and Eastern Europe today!
