I had a similar situation at an estate sale. I purchased a few boxes of old family recipes and was going to put them together for work and try some of them. A day or so later I found a message on an area Facebook site about a family member hoping to find and buy back the recipes. I Facebook stalked the person and found out she was a daughter of a lady I worked with in the past. I contacted my old coworker to let her know I had them. I am a very sentimental person and did not accept money for them. They were generations of hand written recipes. I dropped them off to my friend. A few months later I received a package in the mail. My coworker 's daughter had books made with the recipes and pictures and she sent me a book. It was so amazing and I was so happy to have been able to give back memories to the family. Apparently the family didn't get a great deal of time to go through things before the sale.

Autumn leaves in combination with a neat inventory, a little bit of everything. And a well known voice from a female auctioneer, lol ! 😬 Congrats on the Christmas lot for a whopping five bucks, I am pretty sure there´s something inside for your own collection as well as for resale. Huge compliment that you sold the box of recipes back to a member of this family, Renée. 👍 Keep it up, and if you sometimes got lack of content, there is a lot of indoor topics to cover during winter time (a walk through my collection, a look behind the scenes, history behind the items etc. etc.). Just my 2 cents. Greets from GER, U.

I just thought while replying to another viewer, why didn't I ask if I could take a few minutes and take photos of some of the recipes? Of course he wouldn't have said no and I would have been able to try out some of the dessert recipes! My aunt brought out her binder of recipes a few weeks ago and my mom says "So which drawer do you keep that in?" She tried to grab it from her as she was going through the pages, but no luck haha. We had a deer mount on the wall when I was little and every Christmas, he would get a red nose (clown nose) and a Santa hat. I loved having Rudolph in my living room :0)

Thank you for giving him back the recipe boxes. I think that the problem is that often one or two people are the executors and they make all the decisions. I have also had friends who, for whatever reason, aren't allowed access to pick things from the house. My best friend was co-executor with her Stepsister for her Stepmothers estate. The Stepsister allowed her own family to go through the house first. They took things that were from her Dad's side of the family. They got what was leftover. Sad.

Renee, your a good person letting them have the recipe box for what you purchased them for. I’ve seen the same scenario happen at several estate sales. At one estate sale a granddaughter wanted a mirror that was her great grandmothers. Someone had purchased the mirror as soon as the door opened. When the granddaughter ask if she could buy it they sold it to her for five times the amount that they purchased. I was shocked someone would do that to a relative that couldn’t get to it first.

Exactly! I’ve been to both types of auctions & estate sales. Families could care less about photos & letters and are surprised when they see someone actually buying them as they were going to trash them. I think it was very kind of you to sell back the box of recipes. But at the same time, when a family hires an auction company to get rid of the estate, they should make sure that they have removed anything that the family wants to keep before the auction list is even compiled for the ads. It is not fair to the people attending the auction when the family members decide in the middle of the auction that they don't want to sell certain items. One possibility is that the owner of the house left instructions in their will that everything was to be auctioned off and that the family members had to bid alongside other bidders if they wanted anything. I have heard of that happening to prevent family members from fighting over who gets what after a death in the family. By the way, I think you did well with that $5 purchase on all the vintage Christmas items. Thanks for sharing!

I think sometimes the family is too lazy to go through everything themselves, so they have the auction company do all the work of bringing it out. And maybe there's a time crunch between bringing it out and the auction starting. At least there's an auction. I know in the times when my great-grandparents had to clear out their 'estates' a good portion of the possessions went straight to the dump.

The dump scenario happens more often than I think we realize. Homes need to be emptied & sold to pay for bills, no relatives are left so a company is hired to clear it out, all sorts of different situations!
