"The Fan Dance" forms part of UK Special Forces (SAS & SBS) selection. This test is used as the first major indicator to assess if a candidate has the physical strength and mental determination to pass UK special forces selection The civilian event follows the same 15 mile / 24km course that is part of special force selection and involves climbing up and down Pen Y Fan mountain in South Wales two times from different directions carrying a 35lb / 16kg bergen. The event is run by former members of the Special Air Service regiment. It is a tough challenge!

Seeing this 'Tab' I'm extremely proud of the Fijian contribution to 22 SAS Regiment namely: 1-The Late Talaiasi Labalaba 2-Mr Sekonaia Takavesi 3-The Late Fred Marafono 4-Mr Tom Morrel 5-Mr Ilisoni 'Horse' Ligairi 6-Mr Jim Vakatalai They joined up with my late father Mr Sikeli Vakalala who was a former Airborne man of 16 Parachute Brigade of Aldershot 1963-1974. Thankyou 22 SAS Regiment for Laba's statue placed here in Fiji at Nadi international airport, the Pacific's gateway to the world !!!!!!

Parachute Regiment recruits do this in Week 8 of Basic Training with 45lbs bergan, belt order, and wpn. Average age is about 18. A 5 minute turn-around water break at Storey Arms, and then get going again back over the hill. It's a mental toughness exercise for reasonably fit people. Wear good, comfortable boots - and don't jack. Get a grip..................

Yes, I've done the Fan Dance many a time as have all Paras. It's a standard Trg facility. Brecon, the local town where the Beacons are, (I'm out now so it's probably all changed nowadays) was originally home to the Para Reg' Battle School. The actual Trg area is a place called Sennybridge. As well as a Trg area for Para Reg recruits, it was also where Jnr and Snr NCO courses are/were conducted for all infantry regiments (no longer just Para Reg' as it was, when it was just the Para Reg Battle School) ) and part of that training was/ is at some stage going over the hills of the Brecon Beacons, which includes Pen-Y-Fan.

There isn't really any short-cut. We just got lots and lots of miles in tabbing up and down lots of hills with the full 35lb bergen load. Start with a reasonable distance and then just keep extending it. The longest training tab I did was about 14 miles and the actual event is about 15.5. Jacob's Ladder on Pen Y Fan is very steep so try to get some steep hill work along the way!

ashley styles stfu mate this video isn’t the actual fan dance test. If you’re with your platoon you’d all be working as a group carrying either a stretcher or a log which the sas or commanding officer would give u

Never mind, why should 'anybody or thing pay to walk on a mountain that has long stood their. Before most on you where here ? I walk where I want when I want ! Pay to walk on earths mountains🙈🙉😂

See your point but the Fan Dance event organisers provide directing staff, mountain safety teams, food afterwards etc so this has to be paid for. Nothing to stop anyone doing the Fan Dance route on their own of course (we visited Pen Y Fan a couple of times during our training) but the camaraderie of the event and the excellent organisation makes it well worth it in my book.

'People. Could take their own food and the path I similar to the yellow brick road just like the wizard of OZ it leads you by itself. So if a man or woman is fit enough or built for the occasion the direction is not needed as the path is marked.' That said I wouldn't recomend novelty fit people or over consumers do it without the assistance of yourselves !So I see your point their to. But their's also the free will of the person or person's and if their's enough of them or they're clear fit anyway then they. Need not pay for mother nature's free views of the earth unless the need thsd assistance of people like yourselves 👍
