Women cannot identify with a young lady who isn't immediately her highest self. It triggers biological fears that the woman is a failure as in nature a woman only deteriorates. Thus if Rey isn't ultra super superior from the get go, she ain't ever gonna be any better. That biological clock is ticking. Women preview this subconsciously. Men really identify with the heros journey. We all have to travel in the footsteps of the hero. While, In reality, women just head to the finish line waiting for the victors to cross. Women have no biological need to go on a hero's journey.

@@DVSPress I saw TLJ as a jumbled mess of ideas with no solid direction. A lot of "Let do this, no wait let's do this instead! "NO WAIT! Let's do this instead." It felt indecisive on what it wanted to do. Also you're the first Star Wars fan who seems to have a grasp on what a Mary-Sue is, yet despite this, I disagreed with your assessment. I didn't get the impression that Han, Chewbacca, or Poe liked Rey, and Mary-sues are liked by everyone they meet. Another aspect is that Mary-Sues are one-dimensional and Rey has no dimensions, and Mary-Sues have agency that drives them to action in a plot, which she also lacks. Rey at best to me is an afterthought, inserted at Kennedy's request and not developed any further because "Hey it's Star Wars, the fans won't care." It's irritating, because it shows that Abrams and Johnson either can't or don't care to create something from nothing...

Women are the best they ever will be at about 23. After that, the clock starts ticking and they become less valuable every year there after. This leaves no room for a hero's journey in female fantasy. For if a young woman is not supremely awesome, she never will be. The only direction for an attractive young lady is down in the subconscious of women. "The tock tick of the clock is painful." Silly girls, the heros journey is for boys.

There is something you touched on and not many people actually talk about when discussing the Last Jedi. From the beginning, I always said the Last Jedi was just a rehash of Empire Strikes Back. I would go as far as saying the so-called "subversing of expectations" was Rian Johnson's attempt at making his own Empire. Empire in many ways, subeverted the audiences expectations. And Rian Johnson thought he was doing the same. But Empire did that, while also respecting and acknowledging what came before and also delivering a far more satisfying sequel for the audience. But everything about Last Jedi is just Empire from the "salt" planet (which is just Hoth) to the chase in space to the Rebels having to evacuate their base to the young Jedi prospect wanting to be trained by a reluctant master to the main hero learning a disturbing truth about their origins. I can go on and on. Last Jedi really isn't that special.

Let's face it. There are only so many story lines that you can play in the second act. The Force Awakens was a slavish homage that only fan bois would appreciate. (George Lucas hated it. Oh noes, the god creator hated Abram's reboot because it was absolutely unoriginal.) While I enjoyed the characters in this movie.. it's a lot of cheesy liners and it's very inconsistent for these characters. It has no general themes or ideas. It's boring. It's basically a cheap trick that caters to nostalgia. (The boys freaked out because a girl is waving a dick. Come on.. That light saber is a proxy for dicks. That's why guys babble about the size of their ... light saber. Give me a blaster any day of the week. I'd love a machine gun blaster.) But in The Last Jedi, we get something that changes a bit. Remember, we are supposed to love Skywalker. But whose sitting on that throne by the end? Finally, a Skywalker who grabs for power and gets it rather than being a servant of the Emperor. Our heroine isn't somebody who came from a special family. another change and I welcomed it. Sure, there were failures in the Last Jedi. But it wasn't pandering to me. It was far braver and more interesting than the re-hashed crap that even the extended universe non-canon (yes, even George Lucas didn't think it was canon. Look it up buttercup.) . Look, at the end of the day, it's a simple story. It's about a good side and a bad side. The bad side has a lot of resources and is the "evil empire", the faceless man at the top. The good side is the underdog who just has that gumption. Slap on a bit of magic with this force nonsense and ... you got the American Revolution, magic style. (I mean, all the Empire dudes spoke in Brit accents and all the heroes spoke in American accents. Come on man. And of course, we had that whole 70's vibe with the rage against the man. We saw it in the faceless masks of the storm troopers who were "agents of the system".) There are only so many ways that story can unravel. The entire idea of this trilogy was stupid. (Seriously.. think of it from a time perspective. Death Star explodes at the Battle of Endor roughly 20-30 years before. New Republic starts being formed and I guess a lot of people are happy going by the fireworks scenes that Lucas edited in. So how the hell did the New Order get the presence it did that it had effectively re-subdued the entire universe and had the good guys on the run ... again? Jesus fucking h. christ on a stick.. that's bad. They should have played a spin off of the break up of Alexander the Great's empire after his death. That might have been a better play with the generals in the various regions consolidating power as war lords, the republic bickering and trying to create some consensus.) For all the flaws of Last Jedi, it was better story telling. I understood the characters. They weren't these weird props that Abrams likes to turn his actors into. (and Johnson should have spent more time fixing on the bs mess about Luke missing that Abrams gave him and giving a more consistent character than the one we got. There are flaws with Luke. Deep character flaws that could easily have been used. The easiest one is that Luke is a loser. Sorry fans. He's a loser. When the going gets tough, Luke gives up. All we needed was a back story where some of Luke's students went dark and Luke was horrified and ... gave up. We could have even had a scene where Yoda said "Do. Or do not. There is no try". And then, cackling as he burns the damn tree down because Yoda lost his fight because.. .Yoda was a failure too. That's why Yoda ran away and didn't do anything but hide from the guy that kicked his ass. Yoda didn't get up after that beating while millions of people suffered. Anybody who fan worships Yoda needs to really think about exactly what Yoda was doing besides hiding and nursing his wounds and waiting to manipulate a naive farm boy.)

@jenniferhunter4074
@jenniferhunter4074 4 жыл бұрын
@@CaptCondor It's because we made him a legend. But look at ESB. What does Yoda tell him? Why does Luke give up so easily? His sister is tortured and she still has a witty retort. She's enslaved and she bides her time to kill Jabba. She's under attack and going to be captured (in the beginning of ANH) and she has the coolness of mind to send the droids out. What would Luke have done if he had to experience any of that? Go "It's too difficult"? Let's be honest, the Luke we are introduced to is a naive weak, easily malleable farm boy. That's probably why Yoda and Obi targeted him rather than Leia to attack Vader. Leia would have been used to people trying to use her. Luke.. sweet country naive farmboy luke.. he's a patsy. The great thing is that he grows up, rejects what he's told to do, and still wins. He doesn't use violence to win. He appeals to the humanity in his father and frees his father from Palpatine's control by willing to suffer and die. I like the Luke in ROTJ. I also like him in ANH and ESB and I even like cranky Luke who finally stops running. Yeah.. Rian Johnson didn't understand how he could make a cranky loser Luke without retconning Luke "ROTJ". But when he joins the force at Last Jedi.. I thought it was effing glorious because he finally realized himself. He wasn't afraid anymore and he just was Luke being badass without having to follow the rules of Sith or Jedi. He was the Luke I remember at the end of ROTJ. And fans have to understand.. the legend of the good jedi was a lie. George pretty much showed us that they were just a nice evil in the prequels. He took our illusion of good guys/bad guys, good cops/bad robbers and flipped it.
@CaptCondor
@CaptCondor 4 жыл бұрын
@@jenniferhunter4074 Good points. You could argue that the Luke of Episdoe 4 would have reacted that way to being enslaved by Jabba, I wouldn't be too sure tho about the one he has become by Episode 6. It also was partially or entirely (that's never made clear) his plan to have them all face Jabba together. Which would mean, that Leia was set up for that spot because of the resolve she had shown throughout the original trilogy. To be fair tho, the Jedi were in the originals just something of legend. The way they get portrayed in the prequels is just like the prequels themselves trying to hard to make an idea sensible, that was pretty weird and to begin with. The reason the originals succeded were all else failed was because they only used the background to advance the characters plots.

The Force Awakens is the original sin of this (Rey) Palpatine Trilogy. All we wanted as fans is a good story involving the original characters while treating them with the respect they deserved. They could have done that in the first movie, and later introduce new characters which would earn our respect with good story arcs. We wanted Luke Skywalker the Jedi Master. We didn't wanted a perfect hero, but a competent one. Instead, Disney allowed Rian Johnson to deconstruct one of the most beloved characters in cinema history, and turned him into a nihilistic old man that didn't care about her sister's struggles and wars, didn't care about the galaxy or the new republic. Yeah, yeah, he did the force projection that was cool at the end, but for me personally I felt underwelmed and dissapointed.

IndyDefense This is simply lazy and probably disingenuous on Rian’s part, not that I’m defending JJ. The solution is obvious - even as a Jedi Master, Luke understood he didn’t have enough power to face “X”, so he went off in search of knowledge - the first Jedi temple and texts. Snoke could have easily beeen Darth Plagueis, and there is even an unconfirmed leak that Snoke was supposed to be Son of Mortis. No, Rian wanted to deconstruct everything beloved about Star Wars and that was just his excuse. How he was hired and allowed to do that with the franchise is a very interesting question.

You are exactly right with the caveat that there was a specific individual's fantasy the directors were trying to align with their story...that being Kathleen Kennedy's. She made no disguise of her primary goal to have a female as the protagonist destined to become the hero of the galaxy. Unfortunately, it was not sufficient to simply have Rey fulfill this fantasy but it was deemed necessary to simultaneously tear down the character of her predecessor, Luke Skywalker. Hence Luke being pushed aside completely in TFA and then humiliated in TLJ.

Thanks for the analysis, I always appreciate your level-headed and in-depth commentary. You identify that the movies were written as fan fantasy with themselves or “the audience” inserted as the protagonists, and almost everyone can agree that the entire plan for the sequel trilogy was a loose reboot of the OT.. I’ve done a lot of thinking about what decisions were made at Disney/Lucasfilm and how they led to the product we got. What if the whole trilogy was a very deliberate attempt at making, for lack of a better term, a three-movie theme park ride? No story goals, no creative integrity, no faithfulness to the universe - just crass commercialism and literally an expansion of Disney theme parks on film?

Finn is kinda the Leia insert. He seems to have feelings for the hero, but in the end is a sibling insert. He's the one showing echos of Force ability, but it is never fulfilled during the course of the film. I think cause he's a black guy and not Rey's bio sibling, people are missing the parallels. JJ started with something kinda cool (a rebelling Storm Trooper) but ended up just filling the Leia spot in the new Trio with Finn.

Disney Star Wars viewed as if it were the contents of a fanboy's dreams... okay that's interesting. It's hard not to think about what the psychoanalysts had to say about dreams: in dreams the safeguards (the superego) are loosened and the impulsive, gluttonous child (the id) is able to run wild through the unconscious mind, grabbing armfuls of toys from the shelves, candy from the cupboard, then more toys and more candy; an avaricious little monster in the service of satisfying his base desires. As counter-intuitive as it may sound, projecting onto a screen what fans/consumers wanted really did get us episodes 7, 8, and 9. That, and a dose of current-year politics. Kinda reinforces the idea that Disney Star Wars (and corporate IP ownership in general) are really just enablers of a kind of corrupting inner-life experienced by the fan/consumer -- themselves included.

I'm a fan of star wars but I would have written the sequels to be in service of the OT with organic progression of the story. The indulgent, derivative narrative choices you describe, particularly of the force awakens, are more akin to self-insert and/or Mary sues. These are typical of fan fiction of course, but the product of a fan is not inherently this way. A fan of something can still be a competent storyteller also.

This Disney trilogy was a wasted opportunity in its entirety: 1. Force awakens: definitely a fan fantasy. Honestly it was just a safe movie which tried to set up a lot of future reveals. 2: the last Jedi: very petty destruction of prior movie. Cared too much about mistakes of previous movie and throwing it on its head. It took nonsensical risks which made for a worse movie. Made a lot of characters incompetent. Failed heavily in the execution of plot twists. Honestly had some good moments but that doesn’t make up for its discrepancies 3: too little too late. Period. Honestly I feel like if you split this movie into a trilogy removed the convenient force ex machina and other things you could have something really amazing. It suffers phenomenally from pacing. Also succeeded in making rose a worse character lol. Taking a dead serious moment and cheapening bc she didn’t like how the messenger said it lol. As a whole: the trilogy is cheap there are no meaningful stakes because of a lack of competence and sensible plot.because Rey is a Mary Sue and the main character nothing feels earned there’s no struggle. Finn is waisted bc he reverts to the same character arc. Rose was a bad character bc she contradicted her own character terrible. New characters in 3rd movie is interesting but have no impact since they get very little arc.

The viewer of pornography isn't going to imagine another story in that universe where perhaps the plumber gets back to the office to find out a fellow employee has suffered a personal tragedy and has to summon an inner strength to help. The viewer is going to insert himself or his own character into the scene and alter it according to his desires.

Interesting analysis and I think the 'dream' goes further than the filmmakers. If you speak to people who claim to like these films they often sound (to me) like people who are in denial, people who don't want to wake up from the dream. The people I've spoken to don't actually sound like they legitimately liked the films, they sound like they don't want to admit the glaring flaws in them, they don't want to admit their disappointment. I've had some pretty intense 'conversations' with people like this who really don't seem to like the idea that someone (me) who has been a long time Star Wars fan is no longer interested in watching them.

If the original trilogy was a nourishing journey meant to offer a way towards adulthood, these last 3 movies are junk food with the effect of leaving people stuck in the portal/tunnel of adolescence. There is, in developmental psychology, a concept known as the invincibility (or personal) fable that notes a typical Western Teen's beleif that they are immune to many dramatic consequences in life. There is a strong, narcissistic component to that POV. IMO, there is a continuing upward trend in parenting that confuses self-esteem building with unwarranted praise. As the teen develops into young adulthood AND they have gone without real self-esteem building, which entails training for life goals, ego management and communication skills, those young adults will then be reliant on fantasies from their own mind. Stories from entertainment will help to reinforce their POV that they can do anything (a fantasy when not given skills to attempt, fail and try again) These characters like Rey fit nicely into the invincibility fable and act as "proof" that the fantasty makes sense. The fantasy also becomes reinforced when life demands in young adulthood overwhelm kids and cause a regression back into the fantasy world. JJ Abrams is not a storyteller but I do beleive he's a damn smart businessman!! He knows how to give customers products they want. And what do unskilled, overconfident, narcissitic-bent kids want? Reinforcement of their greatness and invincibility. With Helicopter parenting, the Hero's Journey is toast. With commercials from omnipresent media saying how awesome you are if you own a product, the Hero's Journey becomes pointless, hard work. With unearned praise the Teen's mind sees NO POINT to real training as they got it covered like Rey. With doling out unearned praise a parent may feel that they are actually doing what's expected of them and they can praise themselves for doing what THEIR parent failed to do. With overworked parents or emotionally absent parents a Master/Apprentice relationship doesn't make much sense (parents broken like Luke) Disney creates products for consumers. Kids are not as much people heading towards adulthood as much as revenue streams. There has been a great trust given to people like George Lucas and Mr Rogers for providing stories and skills for those growing up. There is too much pressure on companies to deliver to stockholders. That pressure means that nourishment in media is excluded based upon its ability to bring in the masses AND create merchandising opportunities. When mega media corperations find a way to market and sell the Hero's journey to the massess it will happen. That, however, is highly unlikely. What is marketable and has mass appeal is mindless "heroism," non-stop pacing and defeating others to remain important. Anyone wonder how our mass culture has such a strong undercurrent of hostitlity and competition in faceless media interactions?

This deserves more than a short comment response, but there is a belief pattern I have noticed growing over the last 20 years or so. That is the belief that you are automatically good or bad at things. When a young person encounters something that they are not good at (which, let's be honest, it's almost everything), they give up and think that that thing is not what they're supposed to be doing. I've seen kids cry when they die to the first goomba in super Mario Brothers. They cannot fathom having to improve themselves to have success at something. People blame the self-esteem trap, but I can't help but feel that there is some deeper malaise there. The inverse is also true. If a kid finds what they perceive to be immediate success it's something, they start to think it's some destiny - some part of their identity. Then their ego crumbles when they inevitably come up against a real challenge or they have their talent put into real perspective.
