Hi there computer lovers! Today we are exploring a 2006 HP Pavillion a1700n, a PC with an AMD athlon 64 x2 dual core processer- the the first native dual-core desktop central processing unit designed by Advanced Micro Devices [according to wikipedia] I have been looking into retro computing and hoping to find my dream tower for several years, and finally found this whole setup for $30 on Facebook marketplace! Windows vista was not my childhood OS, but it was still cool to see all the original manufacturer OEM programs and other goodies. I'm still learning about retro computers, so please be informative and more importantly KIND! We all start somewhere. Hope y'all enjoy this video.

I was on a business trip in Fresno the day Vista came out. I bought into the hype about it and went to a store and bought a Vista upgrade disk and installed it on my laptop in my hotel room that night. I immediately regretted my choice, lol. It ran soooooo badly, lol.

1 GB of RAM is literally the minimum Vista requires for the full featured version. That explains why it was painfully slow, and the bloatware you mentioned doesn't help. A clean XP install will be much better for those specs. If you're considering making any kind of upgrade to it, I'd suggest a compact flash replacement for your hard drive first (make sure you know whether it is IDE or SATA before you buy). Anyway, cool video still!! Edit: I watched the again video more carefully, you definitely have a SATA drive so get yourself a SATA to CF adapter. Also, as someone else mentioned, you put the fan back on backwards! So get that flipped 😅
@VeerMaharaj
@VeerMaharaj 2 ай бұрын
Just get a cheap sata ssd. No need for a CF adapter. 20 usd and you're good. If you want to preserve the original HP install of windows, do a clone of the drive asap before it fails (which doesn't sound too far off)
@elektrokinesis4150
@elektrokinesis4150 2 ай бұрын
Why the hell would you use a CF adapter my guy, the flash endurance of (non-industrial) CF cards is EONs behind that of an SSD, you are gambling with your data. Not to mention that all CF cards will be SIGNIFICANTLY slower than ANY SSD, and YES you would be able to see the difference on this machine! . . What an absolutely dull idea to be using CF on these...
@regularhumanoid
@regularhumanoid 2 ай бұрын
@elektrokinesis4150 my reason for suggesting a CF adapter is the same reason it has been adopted by many in the retro pc community- it is physically easier to swap CF cards on a whim, and also easier to image a CF card on a modern computer so as to not actually have to install an OS repeatedly through the retro PC itself. Even if the same is possible on an SSD, its physically more cumbersome. An SD card can work too

Very true, these are actually XP media center edition machines and were just redecorated with vista advertising. This era is rife with lazy turnover machines that weren't designed for vista being forcefully rebadged into running vista - ruining windows vista's reputation 😶 I grew up with one. That said, they actually do run Vista fine . . buuuut only If you can find ram for it and upgrade it to 2GB of ram

The internal graphics card also wouldn't output properly over HDMI so for the longest time I used it in 1600x1200 4:3 stretched into a 16:9 display.

Vista really wasn't bad in retrospect. Microsoft just made a booboo releasing it when manufacturers weren't ready for the jump in system requirements. Windows 7 is hardly different under the hood, which shows the industry just needed a little more time to adapt to Vista.

Just like what regularhumanoid said, I would think Windows XP will fit this machine a lot better in my opinion! Plus, I've had better luck with XP far as playing old CD-ROM edutainment games that I grew up with. You can choose whichever flavor of Windows XP you can put on it, as long as it's 32-bit then you should be fine!

I dont wanna say anything but I have to. 1.) 12:27 - it is a main voltage input select switch. Make sure this is set for 115 Volts when you are in USA, if you switch it it will say 230 Volt, that is what you need in Europe. If you set it wrong, you damage your PSU/PC 2.) 13:05 - this is a surround output, front and rear speaker, center speaker, subwoofer for bass. For normal speakers (Stereo) you need the green plug, or else get a 5.1 surround system. 3.) 17:33 - is there any reason why you put on the fan differently? When you got it, the label was visible from the outside, and now it is in the inside of the PC, meaning you turned the airflow from blowing to sucking. Not sure if that is supposed how this case works.

Vista with all it's Service Packs was essentially Windows 7. As I'm sure other people have written in the comments, Vista isn't where you'll see the best from this machine in it's current form. I'd install Windows XP Professional SP3 and apply the Unofficial Service Pack 4.

I've built a sandy bridge platform inside this case, i have removed the firewire port and built a usb 3 port in its place, everything works from the front panel, i've built rgb so it shines down on the desk, and you can change the colors and the options by pushing the door down, because i've built 2 micro-switches under the door, 1 dud and 1 actual wired up to the rgb board. I put some more stickers on it like wifi 6 and such :p i had so much fun building this system :) It has an i7 2600, 8gb of ram and a gt 1030. I know that the graphics card is not that good, but it is more than adequite for the old games i like to play on it

Hi, nice to see new faces messing around with these old computers and sharing their experience and memories here. It's cool you found such a good complete example for that price, the fact that it is AM2, DDR2 and have SATA and PCI express + PCI will help you a lot if/when you would want or need to upgrade it. (The integrated GPU might be a bit underpowered, a low power one like a 7600GT/GS would be a huge upgrade & 1GB of RAM for vista, doesn't cut it, I would go all the way to 4GB) Don't know if the owner included rescue media or if you can still burn yhe DVDs with the included utilities, but I would use a cloning utility to make an image of the hard disk as clean as it is right now, if the HDD end up biting the dust you will have a way to restore the PC it to its original state using another HDD. You were right about getting nervous about the idea of cleaning the innards of the power supply unit, you should leave that alone until you understand the dangers and learn what to do and what not to do, there are capacitors charged inside with main voltage. Just enjoy the hobby and block the gatekeepers (leave them talking to themselves) they don't add anything to anyone. There are shitty people in this hobby but I think most of us are pretty decent. 😅 Enjoy your machine! BTW. If you are finding difficult to get ahold of physical games for this period at a decent price the games at GOG have an installer download link, copy that to a pendrive, install and enjoy away no DRM or copy protection nonsense!

Hi, love your enthusiasm! The X2 Athlons while 64bit lack some modern instructions so while they can run more modern Windows up to 10 they need the 32bit versions, with as much RAM as you can fit. The side screw is a thumbscrew, they were just coming into fashion at the time. Be careful opening up the power supplies, the larger capacitors can keep a charge. Oh & an anti-static brush should really help you clean without damaging anything electrically and a new CMOS battery is probably needed if the time keeps resetting, usually it's a CR2032. Have fun!

I had a Dell with a Core2 non Duo with a 512meg ATI video card I bought just before Windows 7 came out. I had to reset the Vista multiple times the 4 months before 7 was released. The Dell was way over the requirements Vista needed, but could barely run it. It was definitely an experience I'll never foregt. Once I got my free 7 upgrade, it ran 2 to 3 times faster than Vista.

That's a cool computer! The 1394 connector is also called fire-wire, It is useful for external drives and DV tape camcorders etc. The card inside with the green connector that says line is a modem. The thing on the front that says expansion bay is a 5.25 in bay for Optical drives like a CD/DVD/Blu-Ray burner. It is fine to leave the PC plugged in if you are using it regularly, just unplug it if you won't use it for a while. I have a similar HP desktop (its a few years newer) that I got from my grandma after she got a new PC, I used it for many years till the motherboard died. then I built a new PC for the first time, after that experience I got some upgrade parts and a motherboard for the HP and use it as a backup now. The best way to learn about PC hardware is just to take a PC and start taking it apart and messing with it and upgrading it, replacing parts etc. You might break a few things but its worth it. There is always new things to learn!

Hey Yasmine Collects, how are you doing today? I am doing good here today. You have got yourself a very good winner in a classic computer because they are really hard to come by. I have been a PC Savoy/techie for more than 23 years there. One thing that you always have to make sure of is that since that computer already has the HP apps preloaded in it is that you also have a program in it called HP create recovery disk/CDs so that you can ensure yourself of having a hard drive disaster happen to your computer due to its age and also not know what the operating condition of your hard drive there. Here is a heads-up on that. Otherwise, what a classic treasure you really have there!!! Have yourself a great day there and enjoy your classic rare treasure of a computer there !!!! 😊😊😊😊👍👍👍👍👌👌😁😁

when it comes to Vista and people hating it, it mainly boils down to Vista being advertised as being compatible with the hardware of the time; but when it released, there was a lot of hardware incompatibilities that were frusterating for end users, and it was also bloated for the hardware of the time other than that though there's not much inherently wrong with it!

6:07 Line In jack, for plugging in like plugging into a tape deck or stereo for recording. 12:29 voltage selection 13:15 that's a surround sound port selection, basically can do a 7.1 surround sound just out of those. some retro klipsch surround speakers would go great. You could also use the coaxial audio out that's the orange stereo lookin plug. 13:23 that's a dial up modem card, for dialing into the internet like the 90's. practically useless unless you want to start faxing or something. You probably want to repaste the CPU cooler because the thermal paste is probably dryer than the Sahara desert :p that could be partly why it's slow since it's not cooling effectively I guess. Thermal paste is only supposed to last about 10 years before it dries out and turns into a heat insulator. 18:35 this is a common misconception, there's this thing called ACPI that turns pressing the power button into a command that tells the computer to turn off usually (but can be changed). before that you would have to shut the PC off with a power switch that cut 120v from the wall. any computer running windows that turns itself off and doesn't say "it's safe to shut down your computer" is ACPI compatible. the seller just yanked the plug outta the wall or held the power button till it force shut down. other than that, all you need is to maybe stick a newer hdd or ssd and stick some more ram into it, maybe repaste the CPU and you'd have a pretty decent desktop for vista.

If you unplug your CRT's I'd Unplug the Computers too, anything newer then about windows 98 is going to be atx, which will use power even when off. Not sure how you triggered the boot selection menu, but just like some more modern computers you got it to ask you what device you want to boot from and the only possible options it saw at the time were the Optical Drive and The hard drive, so really you didn't have a choice unless you put a bootable cd in. This is actually kind of a fun age of computer to toy with. IDE and SATA, i'm not sure but you might have a floppy port on board (the bios thinks you do, and there is an unpopulated (I can't tell) either IDE or Floppy port on the board) . Just fast enough for pretty much everything except the modern internet, and enough Ports and stuff to go most directions you'd want to go. I'm not sure about slow down options if you wanted to go really old school with dos games or anything else that would require the system to be slower. I actually think it might be interesting to install windows 98se and see if you can make all the drivers happy..... But it's also a much more painful angle, so maybe you don't want to go through that much pain. I dislike that the "expansion" bay is basically locked to either being internal, or an optical drive, and as I recall one of the reasons those doors stick when going back in is if the drive was replaced at some point. I'm not sure if that's the problem you're having with it not closing correctly, but the sizing difference I had the issue with was something small, so it could just be age wore down a part that messed up the sizing. I can't remember if you take off the front plate of the drive tray if it stops it from sticking.

I remember having this same computer as a little kid and exploring much of the old internet through it, that thing was running XP Media Center '05 though. Sold it off on Craigslist back in 2011 and upgraded to a Win7 laptop, even though I remember mine having that "Vista Capable" designed sticker variant its for this reason Vista had such a bad rap when these machines did better running the Home Basic SKU that was almost as limited as Win7 Starter (though that wallpaper restriction is quite ridiculously arbitrary). Either way, actually affordable hardware that didn't fetch near the thousands of dollars capable of such an OS only really came out when 7 already was released hence the upgrade. I wonder if you can find a disc image for an HP Pavilion on the Internet Archive that ran XP MCE05 and downgrade it to that version, I still have the backup set we used to restore the hard disk to factory for when we sold it if you'd like to try.

That's a decently spec'd home machine from the early Vista era. The graphics are built into the motherboard so not really suited for gaming, but that was something that could be remedied with a separate graphics card. Green port at the bottom back is for an old school telephone dial-up modem. Red switch is so the power supply can run on either 115 volts like we use here in North America or 220 volts like in Europe or other places that use a higher voltage power grid. If you want to get really wild, you can technically install Vista and XP on a modern Solid State Drive (SSD) that will operate many times faster than that 250GB mechanical hard drive. I recently swapped a SSD into my grandmothers old Windows 8 laptop and it's absolutely revitalized the machine. Like...boot up in 8 seconds fast.

Smh 😔... lol jk. Tho might be a good idea if you want to keep tinkering with it. Dynamic power management wasn't as advanced back then, and the CPU will cook itself if you let it. Do hope you keep messing with it tho. This era of computing is when I got into PC gaming and damn did it used to be fun. Take that mobo out, slam it in a all plexi case, throw in a beastly 4gb ram kit, a 750gb hard drive, a ATI X1950, some single color UV cathode lights and TWO DVD drives. You got a the envy of your LAN party right there. Tho I doubt you would want to go that crazy. UV cathodes are a fire hazard lol.

@@Psycheitout is it pretty much expected to need a repaste at this age? Once I get XP installed I have plans to start getting inside and tinkering more. I’m really excited to learn more and have a machine that’s more customized to what I’m looking for 😇

@@YasmineCollects Oh yeah no doubt. Average life span of consumer thermal paste is like 4 years. I've opened Xboxs from that era that have their paste so dried on it was like a layer of concrete. On that note, warm your PC up before taking the heatsink off. That things gonna be stuck on! Also while your in there see if you can find the model number of your power supply. Maybe your motherboard too while your at it, and Google them to see if there's any reported issues. If it's post 2005 it should be clear of the capacitor plague but it would suck for the system to get fried because of a dodgy PSU. Especially when that's one of the few parts that could be easily replaced.

We use it to make the incompatible things to run again on Vista or let's say it in this way, to run modern software. You can google it because this thing became well known. There are videos and on KZfaq. :)

"I don't know what this is: The video". But she watches Michael MJD and This Does Not Compute, so I guess she said to herself: "I can do this, these kinds of videos, I can do this, this could be MY THING on KZfaq, this can be my niche on KZfaq, these videos seem easy enough, I just have to buy an old computer on Facebook Marketplace, and just ramble for like 46 minutes or something, and I'm golden". She is a very "legit" Retro Tech KZfaqr guys, very legit 🤣 Of course, I will acknowledge that it's technically possible that she actually likes retro computers even if she doesn't have much knowledge about them, anything is possible, buuut... I highly doubt it, she seems more like a grifter to me. I apologize if I'm wrong.

I probably shouldn’t respond to this. But I’m human too and this hurt my feelings. I had a sh*t home life and grew up as an undiagnosed autistic woman. I was not encouraged to get into computers or ANYTHING tech related throughout my early childhood…wasn’t even allowed to touch a video game. I was taught to do one thing and that was look pretty so I can perform. I’ve always had an interest in tech (more specifically VCRs) and tried my best to fumble around with little to no support and mostly outside of the home. Pretty much gave up the idea by high school and college and spent a significant portion of my social media presence as a beauty influencer because it was all I knew. I already HAD my ✨niche✨and exited that space because I was not happy. Yada yada yada, I healed some and now we’re here. I told this story in a Q&A already. I gained an audience from my second video on this channel and had no idea that was going to happen. In all honestly I am not really prepared to deal with all these opinions of me so quickly. I’m already trying to personally deal with the doubts I have about pursuing this, let alone having to deal with comments like this. The accusations you’re making is the same imposter syndrome I talk to my shrink about :) Anyways, the more content I make the more confident people seem to be in doing exactly what you’re doing here, and it sucks a lot. I’m very transparent that I often don’t know what I’m talking about. I really believe that my appearance/style/gender is what some people get hung up on. Please, genuinely, ask yourself: would you have the same suspicions if you had no idea what I sounded like or looked like at all? Either way, you’re not here for what I do so move on. Don’t waste your time watching a grifter. Also (human to human) I’d avoid addressing KZfaqrs in the way you did here. It’s very dehumanizing. You type as if “she” (ME) won’t read this and feel hurt or discouraged.

@@YasmineCollectsDon't worry about what other's think just because someone doesn't know one thing about something does not mean you can't learn & enjoy doing what you love. I'm still learning new things everyday no one can know everything even if it's something I'm into like stereo's PC's or whatever it may be.

No one made you watch this. If you didn't like it, click stop and move on. I highly doubt you'd make this comment on a guy's channel. We all have to start somewhere. LGR's early videos were shot with an ancient VHS-C camcorder and looked/sounded horrible. I highly doubt a 'grifter' would know about partitions and dual booting.

Hi Yasmine, Glad to see you so happy on this find. I believe this model was released in 1995. By chance I googled the model and I got response on the newegg website listing a bunch of details on that baby. I have experience in IT for about 30 years working for corp/shops. I used to service these in various models in 1997. I recall replacing a ton of modems and hardrives on these. That "motor" is the cpu fan. Also, look closely at the power supply label, it might have date of manf. If you need help with more info feel free to contact me. Al from Ocala.
