@@OkoloKino That is interesting. Let me make two more points. One, your documentary mentions the "Marvel hero" style of war movie now coming out of Russia. Recently I analyzed the style of recent war movies - and especially since 2017 they have produced at least 18 WW II features emphasizing action and showing heroic Red Army soldiers and pilots destroying the German invaders. (Of course earlier films such as 2012"s Stalingrad also did this). All these films emphasized "the threat from the West" and Russia's heroic duty to triumph - totally consistent with Putin's world view. More reflective and personal films about the cost of war, which were part of Soviet and Russian cinema in the past, have been absent. Second, as the son of Ukrainians born in the West, I feel an emotional need to reject Russian culture, which is awkward. Directed by Ukrainian Bodnarchuk, War and Peace is an amazing film. At this point in history I am especially struck by Prince Andrei's cold speech on the night before the Battle of Borodino when he says he would simply kill every French invader who has invaded and destroyed his homeland. (This is clearly how many Ukrainians feel about the Russians right now). However, despite the film's humanism, it embraces "being Russian" which is troubling for Ukrainians whose nation and families are under attack. Yes, I've come across some profound analyses of propaganda in their recent films. They've been cultivating animosity towards Western civilization for years. The conversation has shifted from the war with Germany to a generalized 'war with the West.' The narrative now downplays World War II, focusing instead on their own version of the Great War, marked by different dates and key historical moments. In many ways, it seems as if nothing has changed since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Progressive society was duped for years, led to believe in the democratic values of the country. Even after the events of 2014, and continuing into the present, some people still view this as solely Putin's war, failing to recognize that the population has been inundated with lies. @@OkoloKino Yes, the more educated and the ones who could be the basis of opposition have largely fled the state. Many of those who remain do not wish to believe the "terrible truth" that Russia may actually be the aggressor - this is never an easy thing - and will therefore be more willing to believe the convenient lies which allow them to passively accept the dictatorship. Facing truths may force you to take action and taking action condemns you to lengthy prison sentences.
