The reason they check your luggage when you exit from Bahrain and enter Saudi Arabia is because alcohol is sold in Bahrain but not allowed in Saudi Arabia so they were checking if you had any alcohol with you.

I'm not sure about this being the fastest border crossing or least troubling. I'd say the quickest and easiest border crossings are between Schengen Treaty EU countries. You simply drive through without stopping as there is nobody in the booth., as I'm sure you experienced when you rode the bike from Germany to Austria. If you are not used to it, you tend to slow down, and look for someone who will stop you and check you out, but there is no-one there! I'm surprised Gulf nations haven't implemented something similar between themselves.
