IMO, since fire generally doubles every 30 seconds, getting a fast knockdown in the first minute is crucial. I would rather risk running out of water, than allowing the fire to exponentially increase while I attack with a small hand line. Excellent video!

Well, if you have two minutes of water for the deck gun, "policy" might be to use it for one minute starting ASAP and then stop to assess the situation. You still have a good amount of water for the lines and the deck gun can stand by for a breakout.

I love that clip from Beaver Dam! It's humbling in that when I was an engine chauffeur MANY years ago, it wouldn't have occurred to me to use the deck gun on an initial attack. Deck guns and ladder pipes were considered exclusively defensive. Surround and drown. Nor would we have considered a transitional attack. It was either offensive or defensive, and once it was defensive there was no turning back. This would have been truly out-of-the-box thinking back then, and probably panned. Great that it's on people's minds now.

20 years on a small county FD and a college Fire Science Instructor. Another area when a MS is not called for is when its deployment over saturates the upper floors. The upper floors can sometimes collapse on the entry/rescue team on the first floor. That large volume of water weighs a lot, and it only takes minutes to destabilize upper floors. BTW, Thanks for educating the public. Being on a small county FD, we occasionally had to stop our advance and try to retrieve gear the local drug addicts thought would be fun to take. At one point, they planted a fake bomb on our water tender for laughs. That nearly shut down the entire rescue operation. So keep up the good work. We need the public to understand our operations better.

I'm glad these are working out. I've seen a number of YT videos where it seems like the FD accomplished little. The fire continued and completed it's desire of devouring the building and contents despite the FD's efforts.

ive been a firefighter for 10 years now and i have to say they did a hell of a job using the deck gun. the only thing i can say is that they shouldve hooked up to the hydrant while making the deck gun attack

I think they moved like a hurd of turtles. How fast was response time from the bells ringing to arrived at the fire? If it was fast enough the deck gun would have been overkill. 5:33 to turn on the hydrant?

14:44 - The fact the firefighter saw the guy on the back of the truck and turned around and walked away. Clearly they knew them and made no attempt to try to stop them.

Have seen a blitz attack work tremendously fast many times if applied correctly while someone is getting a secondary water source. Nice commentary!

Rural operations have a different philosophy on that immediate water supply. If you can get a knock down and give the tanker time to get there then dump the tank. Trade off on total fire spread and lose vs time to get water and set up equipment for immediate use. When you have no personnel or water you have to consider slowing it down and waiting.

Tech tip - there are programs that will do video stabilization. That would really help on clip #1.

in the past few yrs I made comments as to why deck guns were never used and then they ventilated and lost it all..I was hit real hard...but now I see your video and use deck guns,,its the smart move...knock it down fast...

A blitz attack with a monitor and a 2.5' line is a great tactic to knock out some heat to allow for a possible interior attack, especially with a heavy fire load such as in the video. Well involved garage fires are a great way to utilize them.

Good job, but speed in getting tank water on the fire fast is critical, especially if blitzing. The goal should be water on the fire within 1 minute of arrival. This takes practice but very doable!

The 3 rd clip I wish everyone had a tank that size when I started we had 500 gallons and lucky for 750 to a 1000 gallons so better safer tactics hit it big from the street now.

If I wanted to serve as a firefighter in my county, would I be able to get my EMT certification and go straight to the academy and then request a position in my county or is it more complicated than that?

What he didn't do was to make sure that the Supply Line is clear when it's getting hooked up and hopefully it's a good source and then it's not a end of the line connection, which usually is still full of rust and muddy water until it's gets cleared out.... and then if it's not it will clog up the Whole System and then 😮 your SOL.....

I'm not a firefighter and enjoy watching your videos, they really explain what is going on. After 911 I kinda lost respect for many first responders not for what they do but the arrogant super hero attitude. You guys really put yourselves in danger. Especially in the older tender box neighborhood and the old wearhouse district.

You said hustling, no they were moving like snails. Hooking the pump to the hydrant Time was incredible slow this should be done in under 1 min. It took them 5 min to turn on the hydrant by this time mark 5:33 Thats not fast enough. The hydrant should be full city pressure, but what is full city pressure? This can very how old are the city lines how big are they and what feeds them is it a pump or a water tower? It only take 15 min for a house to be fully engulfed in flames how long was the response time? If they moved as fast as they hooked up the hydrant to load up the truck and drive to the fire 10 min could have been cut off that time, meaning saving life's and property. This department needs to run drills. Find ways to get faster and take every call as if it was there own homes on fire and there loved ones inside. Had that been done the fire would not have been that big I'm not impressed.

Great videos!, about the guy grabbing the hose off the truck, it happened real quick, but looks like he did check with a fire-fighter in full turn out gear who may have been doing the size up. I've seen a video of Tulsa Fire Dept. working a house fire. They are a full -time professional fire dept. In this video a guy jumps up on the back of the first arriving engine and begins pulling hose off. He is obviously a fire-fighter however, he is not wearing turnout gear. He's just in his blue sweatshirt and sweatpants with the TFD logo on them and I think he had a HT Radio on his waist. He's more than likely the driver or I think they call them equipment operator. His job is to stay with the truck, connect the hoses and operate the pump. The rest of the crew was pulling up their nomex hoods getting their air masks on, and getting ready to attack the fire. This one was not a good candidate for a deck gun, the fire was mostly on the interior or the back. They got the aerial ready in case they needed a master stream, but didn't deploy it. When they got the second line on the fire for the interior attack, they took care of the fire post haste. Then a third company batted clean-up.

There really isn't a bad time to use a deck gun when there is a tremendous amount of visible fire showing... even without a supply established... the main factor in that is making sure to not dump the whole tank when it's not necessary... most fires can be knocked down sufficiently within seconds ... then get after it with a hand line... just my opinion

These guys look like the Keystone Cops to me. First priority should have been to get the canon going and second (simultaneously) hook the hose up the Fire Hydrant. These guys waited too long and did not move fast enough.

2:42 This is when he should have stopped. The flames are gone, and everything is soaked. You never know when your water supply will give out. Even though he had plenty of onboard water to continue, a 1-3/4" line could have surgically applied water to mop up. What if the hydrant couldn't supply water to the engine and other apparatus didn't arrive for a while? "Eliminate the threat quickly and safely while using the least amount of water." Every word has meaning! Quickly, Safely and conserve water by thinking about where every drop is going and what it is doing. That's the Job that will save property, victims and firefighters. As far as running out of water, he should have used only 15 seconds of water for all that fire. At maximum pressure, that's 300 gallons. You don't need maximum pressure to reach that porch. They could have gotten by with 200 because that looked like high pressure. 9:40 The Deck Gun should have been located so it has a Line of Sight on all the burning material. That would have been in line with the driveway. 12:05 The video was edited. Camera users should try to capture the fire department's performance for training purposes. As you drive up to the scene, you have to stop where you have that LoS on all the burning material not just, in front. The right side of the main house was not accessed by the stream. 14:12 If they knew the hydrant was there, they shouldn't have stopped. They should go straight to the house and get to work. The hydrant was close enough to be connected from the scene. The person who ran to the engine and pulled the supply line did it with such authority that he is most likely a firefighter. 16:42 If you own these cars, don't assume they are out of the firefighter's way. Move them around the corner or put them in your driveway.

Disagree. You can see the fire / heat is still pushing heavy steam well after that, and even when he shuts it off, fire starts immediately pushing out the “right” door/windows. Probably could have hit that area for another few seconds, not that he could probably see that at the time, what with all the heat he was removing/ aka the large steam cloud.

@bkane573 You're right about him not seeing the remaining fire but by the time most of the porch was socked, a line and fully dressed firefighter should have been ready to climb on the porch to cool as he went and hit that room through the windows. If the fire was inside the front right room, the massive amount of water from the Deck Gun would have blocked the pressure release locations and pushed the fire deeper until the room was soaked. That's where the surgical application of water comes in while using the least amount of water.
