I love the progression of Dracula. He started the purge with such fury and fire, but quickly lost energy and fell into his depression. I don't think there was any reasoning with Dracula at the beginning, he was only thinking with his heart, not his head.

I remember seeing another breakdown of Dracula's death scene, and how important of a thing it is that Dracula calls Adrian "Our boy" instead of characterizing him as Lisa's son, because it shows that it isn't just a case of "You remind me of her", he genuinely loves Adrian as the greatest gift Lisa had given him and the realization that he had forgotten such a fundamental thing in his rage and sorrow is what gave him the clarity he needed to stop

Loved your thoughts on this one. Dracula's "I'm killing my boy" scene is so beautiful and moving. And the voice acting is incredible.

I think I do disagree a little bit on your reasoning behind Dracula not killing Trevor and Sypha. It seems to me that he's more having fun fighting the "vampire hunters" as a means of distracting himself from the pain he feels when he has to face his own son. Dracula's mood visibly improves whenever he's hit by Trevor, but he goes back to being sad and angry when Alucard jumps back in front of him. Other than that point, I think you're spot on.

An interesting note to make about Dracula's staking was that Dracula himself helped his son make the final thrust into his heart. Because this moment wasn't depressing enough.

Another important thing to note is that our introduction to Adrian immediately tells us so much about the relationship he had with his father. Dracula is this immortal, highly intelligent, incredibly powerful creature, and Adrian doesn't show any signs of fear or hesitance when confronting him. Almost everyone else tries to play it smart and careful around him, even when he's been weakened, but Adrian sees him at the near peak of his power and the most wrothful he's ever been, and just bluntly tells him what he's doing is wrong

Love the Alucard costume and the fact that you’re continuing with the Castlevania series :)

There's a few shots of Dracula's hands in his fight with Alucard, making a point of him stopping himself using his claws and instead clenching into fists to punch. Considering a single slash injured Alucard so badly he needed a year to recover and is still scarred despite his healing powers, yeah. Dracula is holding back in that fight.

We see in other fights Vlad using his claws, but when fighting Adrian the second time, Vlad uses a fist. This is certainly a reaction of Vlad not wanting to kill or seriously injure his son.

Every time I hear "I am killing our boy!" I just crack inside like dropped egg. Dracula voice actor just kills it with the amount of pain, dissapointment, self loath and realization what he has become after everything she Lisa did for him to not be monster. This line alone always just immidietly makes me cry. To be so far gone that you kill your most beloved ones... what an abyss you have fallen into. Great voice acting.

The most powerful shot in the series was the very last shot of Season 2 where we see Alucard just break into tears as it all just finally starts to hit him. I can't wait for you to tackle Trevor. The thing I liked most about Trevor and Dracula is that they both started the story in more-or-less the same place.

Also people seem to overlook the fact that Alucard is like 18/19. He is nowhere *near* emotionally stable enough to kill his father. Loving this Castlevania series so far!

The battle between Alucard and Dracula was an emotional one for me to watch because neither of them enjoyed that fight. You could tell they didn't want to do it, yet they both felt it was the only way. The animation made the fight seem really cool at times but it hits you in the feels when you realize this is father and son fighting to the death and then it becomes incredibly heavy. I appreciated the way they represented how difficult it was for Alucard even though it seemed like he made the decision to kill his father easily.

The whole "My boy, i'm killing my boy, your greatest gift to me. and i'm killing him" I'm not one to usually cry with tv shows or videogames... but that one made me tear up

It's such an interesting character arc through the whole series. At first, he's basically a child who is trying very hard to be an adult and make mature, world changing decisions, and that ends in tragedy. Then he breaks down and becomes incredibly vulnerable, stoism is gone, but loneliness and immaturity remain, which again leads to a tragedy. And then finally he starts maturing and really growing up, and by the end he is finally free of the shadows of both of his parents and finds peace. A beautiful arc. Great analysis, as always, thank you!

Whats really interesting is that ultimately Alucard grows by having the exact same journey that his mother wanted for his father. And becomes the person that she likely wanted him to become threw interacting with other human beings.

Adrian and Trevor's relationship is fascinating. Adrian knows a fair bit about the Belmonts and what they are about. The scene in the Belmont Hold demonstrates one of the few times that Adrian gets some emotion when he talks about how the Belmont family kills vampires. The fact that he could move beyond that to work with Trevor, let alone befriend him, shows that he can change and the world may not be as black and white as he likes to believe.

That scene in Alucards childhood bedroom always hits me in the feels.

As a kid I never wanted to become just like my father but as an adult I'm realizing even though I'm not building motorcycles and cars I have become so much like him hiding from the world surrounded by all of my work and technology, I am my fathers son.

And the fangs return! The father/son aspect of Dracula and Alucard's relationship is... probably unhealthy at the best of times. There are also clearly instances when one wishes the other would kill them, to end their suffering, and other times when both are acting in a manner that even Trevor's being seen as the adult in the room (when Sypha isn't there).

Am I the only one who really wanted a show (or maybe just a special episode) of the love story between dracula and lisa? I feel like I'd be super cute to see them bond and have fun together and really see how she influenced him:)

My head cannon is that Alucard did use that year to try to convince his father to avoid genocide, but dracula genuinely falls into such a deep depression that he just ignores and alienates himself from his son. As a being who has lived for centuries without love suddenly losing the most important thing in the world to him simply breaks him. I think Alucard realized this and that's why his scene of confronting him was his last ditch effort to show his father how serious he was and hoping to snap him out of it. But Alucard is grieving too and he's frustrated because he knows that's not how his mom would want his father to react and so he acts in frustration.

I'm kinda torn about that fight scene with the four of them. One theory could be that Dracula was just toying with Trevor, Sypha and Alucard because he wanted to feel powerful and take his time taking out his rage on them. Another could be, like you said, that he instinctively held back because he didn't want to kill Alucard and the only people he seems to be close to. But there's another possibility, that maybe Dracula subconsciously saw in their coming to the castle his chance to die, and with his motivation to go on already being so low, he just didn't feel like giving it his all anymore. One of them hits him, he hits back. Alucard smashes Dracula through a wall, Dracula sends Alucard flying through a different wall. At this point he doesn't care about his castle anymore since it's such a lonely, bitter place. Until they fly into Alucard's old room, and that's like the last drop for Dracula. It catches him by surprise and it triggers all his repressed emotions all at once.

Wow this one hit pretty hard. It seemed like it hit you pretty hard too. I hadn't thought about how both of them were trying to honor Lisa without really understanding what she valued and wanted in life in the first place. They both felt like this was some unavoidable fate but they were just choosing the most extreme option. Maybe that was easier than openly and honestly accepting their pain. Loved your insights and your cosplay was on point too 💯

I would like to see your thoughts on Alucard's mentality in his maturity as well. Not only after he killed his father but also since he's pretty much a teenager as stated by Sypha.

I was thinking that too, Dracula could easily kill the trio if he really wanted to, he hasn't been feeding himself but he was still obviously too strong to fight against. It really did seem like he was subconsciously doing the bare minimum when fighting them.

alucard comes across to me as such a lonely person, for the better part of his life he probably only really knew his parents, and there arent many other half human- half vampires like him around, if any, so that is another reason why he is so isolated from the rest of world.

It's interesting how you bring up Alucard's first method to trying yo stop Dracula. It kind of reminded me of Isaac's conversation with the Captain. Instead of directly telling Isaac that not everyone is awful, yhe Captain emphasizes with his worldview admitting the fact that people are cruel, and also helped remind Isaac of the times when people were kind to him. The Captain kept his own feelings out of the conversation and let Isaac do most of the talking to get a better framework of his mindset.

I like the fact that Trevor Belmost was the last person to create amusement in Dracula.

Alucard had seen only his fathers hatred and wrath in the beginning stages of Draculas war. But by the final confrontation, he saw the mask of his fathers anger burned away, leaving only the crushing sorrow that was propelling him forward. He saw the pain his father was in, and gave him the only mercy he could think of.

Have you noticed the severe depression Dracula displays when talking to his generals? Like after every meeting he would just slump in his chair and when Issaic speaks of Dracula, he speaks of him with this reverence, but when he is alone in front of the fireplace, Issaic sees Dracula as like this, husk of a once great man. The only time Dracula perks up is when Godbrand and the female vampire questions him, or when Alucard, Trevor, and Sypha fight him. But it seems to me that the task of eliminating humanity doesn't have any passion behind it, instead he looks at the task as like a chore.

As someone who has struggled a lot with feelings of anger and misanthropy in his life, I am kind of surprised it did not occur to me how badly Alucard was approaching his father over his plans. To be fair Alucard was apparently pre-maturely aged and even if he was a full-fledged adult I doubt he was in the best mental state himself. Granted I do not think there was any real chance of talking Dracula down at that point. I really hope we will get a part 2 for Isaac to see you respond to the interactions between him and the Captain. It is merely an amateur opinion but I think the Captain did a lot of things right with how he approached Isaac which makes a good contrast to the dynamic between Dracula and Alucard.

@Georgia Dow I remember a blink-and-you-miss-it scene in Alucard's childhood-room, where it shows a small white-wolf stuffed-animal. It twitches slightly in response to seemingly nothing, since Alucard and Vlad are at that moment just standing in the room. I choose to speculate that Alucard's choice of Shapeshifting into a White Wolf is a call-back to his family and childhood and mother. To a happier time. While the rules for Castlevania's (the show's at least) magic-system are not spelled out too much, sympathetic magic (in both theological anthropology and popular culture) often tie magic and emotion tightly together. Think the Patronus symbols of Harry Potter, or the (second) Shroud of Turin in the Dresden Files, or so many others. I don't think the animators would have animated the little stuffed toy to twitch, without it meaning something. My money's on the Pathos tying to his v. game classic wolf form, as both a fan-service reference AND an allusion to his own emotional stake in their father-son fight.

Castlevania was an instant favorite game of mine as a child; the large spooky castle to explore, the horde of undead to vanquish, and amazing accompanying music. Netflix's adaption was really well done in bringing mostly flat, broad characters to life. I look forward to any more Castlevania related topics you might cover. Maybe potentially the mess that is going on in Hector's head during the series, or how the heroic trio communicates with each other. Another consideration was that Dracula had stopped feeding blood the very thing that makes a vampire keep their vitality. So not only did he have inner conflict but he fought against his very instinct to feed. Like you said he could have killed all three of them easily but his inner turmoil.

Is there going to be an episode with Alucard and The Twins? It's a very dark chapter, but I would love to have your insights on it. In a lot of ways, Alucard unwittingly undermines the trust of the Twins by trying to shape their relationship into something more like the connection he had with Trevor and Sypha, because that's the only experience he has he's ever had with friendships.

You getting emotional over the "big" scene really shows just how brilliant it was. It was amazing and thank you for going over it so well, it actualy improves the whole thing.

Watched the Puss in Boots videos and just 1-2 videos especially on Arcane's Jinx and Silano, which made me gravitate towards in understanding. I know I am just a stranger passing by. If you could make a video on people who self isolate and who push others away, that would be really lovely. I find myself doing that, and I don't understand why I do that. God yeah that Alucard/Dracula death scene is one of the most sad things I have ever seen. It seemed a bit difficult to even talk about.

I hate to be away from home, I can't watch videos this month and for the first half of June. But I'm sure your Castlevania videos are amazing, can't wait to watch them!

The whole series shows how much Dracula really loved Lisa and just how that love was... warped by the choices of the clergy and townsfolk. He went from being a complete recluse to almost a beacon of hope with Lisa's influence, not just for each other but potentially the whole world; he wanted to be better and the two of them made the world a better place by their presence. But people can be cruel and callous and ignorant of themselves and each other and the beacon went dark. So very dark that it extinguished all light around it, even, if temporarily, Dracula's love for his own son. Castlevania was a shockingly adept perspective on humanity.

This truly is one of my favorite series!

Thank you for this Georgia, when you started with Castlevania I was awaiting this part impatiently. Now to wait until you can analyze the relationship between Lenore and Hector, it will be nice to see someone defending her without calling her "mommy" every few paragraphs. On the being fixated about things, and almost unable to change your opinions, I think it kinda works that way for vampires, from Alucard's POW, he tried all he could, and there was no solution other than killing his father, because he knew his dad was dead set on doing horrible things, because in the past, Dracula already retorted to do horrible things to achieve his ends. On the being way too stubborn to seek out peace with one another once the warpath was open, Lenore's last conversation with Hector also throws some light on this, how vampires are, by nature, static, and feel lost when things start changing, so after Adrian failed to make Dracula quit, this was the only resolution.

A weird memory that is tied to a smell for me is when i was a kid spending a ton of time with my dogs in the woods and swamps around where i live, it is always brought back when i smell lily flowers because they grew all over the swamps

Concerning the fight scene you were talking about around 11 minutes in, I 100% agree with you. I, myself, as someone who has been playing Castlevania games since I could first hold a controller lost my mind when the song started playing. My dopamine was definitely through the roof. Being the only out of I think 4 or 5 people in the room who fully got it, I'm so glad that they let me go back, scene by scene and explain the relevance. I got to do that with a lot of the easter eggs. Luckily, they not only were unbothered by me nerding out, they asked when they didn't know. "Was this/that in the games? etc etc." I consider it my newest core memory, lmao. I knew from the beginning that the actual fight with Dracula (while hype) was going to be a very sad thing at its core. Between Dracula's, "My boy, I'm killing my boy, your greatest gift to me. And I'm killing him." and everything that comes after it concerning Alucard and the ramifications of his Patricide is just simply heartbreaking. First time in a long time that a piece of media has made me cry. Alucard on his own in the castle, crying in his father's chair, knowing that now that both of his parents are gone he is (minus his friends, though not the same thing) truly alone in the world and feeling the weight of his father's life in his hands... oof. Castlevania as a series is amazing (with some notable complaints, as any series has its share of) and I'm happy to have watched this and a bunch of the other videos you've done covering the characters and show. Your take is always poignant, fascinating, and informative in a way that I can understand and digest. Thank you for making these videos.
