Just as I thought! I've wanted this for 15yrs! This is amazing, and why is this the first time anyone has done a solid review on this? It's fucking 2020! Thanks David! Appreciate it! And thanks for using actual music! I know it's a pain in the ass, but I certainly appreciate it!

Great review. For what it's worth, it's my goto UAD plugin. I wish I had the budget for the hardware, it is indeed on #1 on my wishlist. The one thing I like about all UAD plugins, they are modelled against the actual hardware in terms of behaviour. So the good thing about that is that all though I have never touched the hardware I all ready know my way around this piece and gear and it's sweetspots, and this device has many. Again, great review!

Always wanted to get one of these in the mastering chain and put it through the paces (mainly for the warmth, saturation, and tranny) but I've always hesitated because I generally like my mastering compressors to have a SCF and mix knob. However, it does have inserts....so using an EQ to cut the lows might do the trick. Thanks for another great review!

This course complements really well with "How to record, mix & master alternative metal". What type of hardware gear would you recommend to do the same job as the "vintage drive" & "stereo image spread" of the SSL fusion for mastering ? I already use a SSL bus comp (Xlogic series) & a Drawmer 1973 (both hardware).

David, short question. The Fatso indeed sounds lovely. What do you say, referring only to the saturation and the roll off the high end... What in your opinion comes close in plugin format? Thank you.
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 4 жыл бұрын
Eh.. hard question, I can't reply without sounding like an analog snob, but it'd probably take 3 plugins to get close, kclip for the shaving in one of the colored algos, weiss deesser or soothe or both for the high end, and maybe abuser or saphira or locness in low gain setting. But while I'm typing I'm saying no with my head. Maybe the uad, but I don't have it so I can't really vouch for it
@nichttuntun3364
@nichttuntun3364 4 жыл бұрын
@@mixbustv haha. So much choices. I do understand and your tips are most valuable for me. Thanks. KClip is great as well as Abuser (waiting eagerly for the announced update) and LocNess. I often use U-he Satin for roll off. Cool you mentioned Soothe, I didn't think of it yet. I got Melda MSpectral dynamics which does literally the same but is tweakable in a much much deeper way and has far more options as Soothe. I think the biggest mountain for beginners is not to use the plugins in a correct way but to sake Decisions which tool to use in which situation. Thanks again David for taking your time. As always a pleasure.

@mixbustv
@mixbustv 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how I'd go about doing any of this with the ones you mentioned. The only close function would be the hf limiter on the fusion and yet, they sound different, i love the hf on the fusion (just mastered an album with it and it's great) but quite different from this. The pure clipping function none of the ones you mentioned have, closest being my Drawmer but totally different type of saturation, especially when you drive the fatso close to "too much" I can't think of anything that sounds like it. Successor is great again, but different color not much saturation like this (i actually use the 609 more). These will go on drums (bus) and either vocal bus (stereo) or vocal mono and bass. That's another thing, I basically have 4 independent channels if I want. Super versatile

such a shame theres no controls over the compression like ratio attack and release etc so on the mixbus it will probably be one of those that you try on a song and if it doesnt work( no possible tweaking) you should then just turn it off or use just the saturation but no bus compression.

FATSO doesn't have fully controllable attack and release but a number or "presets" for those, so it's pretty easy. You use one when you want full control of those parameters and the other when you need more than just compression

I know it's not the same, but how would you compare this unit transformer wise (and (vintage drive on SSL fusion Vs. tape saturator on fatso) with SSL Fusion to use on a mix bus. If you had to pick just one unit for EDM music, to add some balls and color. :))
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 8 ай бұрын
Probably not my first choice. First of all you'd need the EL-FTC control on it to properly use it on 2bus for saturation. Second, the fatso is warm and fuzzy and it can be too soft for EDM. Fusion drive is VERY colored and it might work on some song, not so much on others. You'd be better off with something else like the BUS+ or HG2 or Wes NGBus

Hey David, thanks again for this awesome video. I do have a question about the fatso though. As you very well know eq into comp will sound different than comp into eq. The question I have here, is this: is the fatso comp-into-tranny, or tranny-into-comp? I would believe comp-into-tranny will give a more consistent transformer sound to the material, right? But I can't find documents about the wiring of the fatso. help! :-)

Sounds awesome. What is the difference between the ELI Fatso and the UBK fatso?
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 2 жыл бұрын
Attack and release of the compressor presets are different, so it's the responsiveness of the Warmth circuit, and the face plate is brown. which looks pretty bad to me. I like the original better, that is THE sound of the fatso, the other, is something else, you may like it or not but it ain't the fatso. I also trust Dave Derr (who invented it and everything else EL) more than, well, anyone else basically

Hi, is it possible to buy a single one of these/ or a single distressor and process a whole stereo mix through that single unit? Or is it necessary to buy two of them to process a stereo signal?

"This" is stereo, Distressor is mono, and no you need a stereo unit or two mono to process a stereo signal

Apple and oranges, nothing can touch the Neves, nothing can touch the FATSO, which has more functions and it's way more versatile but the sound of the Neve is THAT sound. That's why I have 2 of both lol

Hi! Just asking why you are you spending so much on analog gears when you can achieve things in the box too ? Whenever I ask about plugins vs hardware, accuracy, A/B etc always get shut down by mix engineers... "Its not gears but how u can mix things. Don't fall into the pit that everyone is doing". And next day I see them uploading pics of new purchased analog gears with status " Pure sound, beast, unlike anything ! " 🙄😞🥺

I think you have the answer in your question. Who told you you can achieve the same things ITB? Proably who doesn't have gear, or like you said, they tell you you can, while using hw lol
