'The Favourite' Press Conference | Yorgos Lanthimos & Cast | NYFF56

Yorgos Lanthimos, Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, Nicholas Hoult, Joe Alwyn, and Tony McNamara (with a special appearance by Sandy Powell!) discuss The Favourite on the Opening Night of the 56th New York Film Festival.
In Yorgos Lanthimos’s wildly intricate and very darkly funny new film, Sarah Churchill, the Duchess of Marlborough (Rachel Weisz), and her servant Abigail Hill (Emma Stone) engage in a sexually charged fight to the death for the body and soul of Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) at the height of the War of the Spanish Succession. This trio of truly brilliant performances is the dynamo that powers Lanthimos’s top-to-bottom reimagining of the costume epic, in which the visual pageantry of court life in 18th-century England becomes not just a lushly appointed backdrop but an ironically heightened counterpoint to the primal conflict unreeling behind closed doors. Olivia Colman will break alot of peoples hearts..Because she will win the Academy award for The Favourite,even over Glenn Close,who sadly will see her fate matching the one of Peter O'toole..It will be a British night ..oh i can see it now!..And by the way Yorgos Lanthimos is a genius!!!!

Vincent H. I would hate to see the one and only Glenn Close by pass yet again ..but this New Academy it’s not my grandparents Academy ..it’s new and edgy and they won’t considerate traditions or things like that-a shame really- But lets see;Colman its a Lock for BAFTA along with GG and if SAG ( Screen Actors Guild ) awards the British actress with their accolade then it’s done..but we are just at the very beginning of this quite competitive award season..so,stay tune.

Id hate to see anyone get an award like that-Only because you belong to a specific nationality,you just get it???.......BUt lets face it,theres a lot of politics around it-and everybody does it in one way or another. Glenn Close deserves to get finally her FIRST Oscar!!,its a crime of huge proportions that she doesnt even have ONE!! ONE!!..IM not sure if the British Academy has ever awarded her before;but still!..I have my doubts about her chances this time and even more considering that Lady Gaga is in the very talk along with Olivia Colman.......My money is still with the British actress..But everything will come to the Guilds.If SAG awards other than Close,then its the British who will get the Oscar-the European share of the Academy Membership will vote in bloke in favor of The Favourite Actor..Now f Gaga Wins then its a shame-nothing against the singer/actress..But the nomination itself its her reward,thats it.

As a Greek, I'm so happy for Lanthimos's success and the whole Greek "weirdwave" that he started. There's so much talent in Greece and it's been a sad sad few decades without any significant film production. I hope more of our outstanding actors and film creators become more visible internationally because they deserve it. And at the same time I'm super happy with this collab with these particular actors (Colman, Stone, and Weisz) who are outstanding and beloved from a number of other projects.

@@polytrelaras1 Άμα δεν ήμουν Greek ρε εξυπνάκια το πιο πιθανό είναι να μην ήξερα αν η Ελλάδα έχει ή δεν έχει καλούς κινηματογραφιστές και καλούς ηθοποιούς που δεν έχουν αναδειχτεί έξω, οπότε δε θα μπορούσα να πω "χαίρομαι που αναβιώνει ένα σινεμά που ήταν ψιλονέκρα για δεκαετίες και που δίνονται ευκαιρίες σε καλλιτέχνες που έχουν πολλά να προσφέρουν". Για το Γαλλικό, το Ιρανικό, το σκανδιναβικό σινεμά που έχουν τεράστια παράδοση και άνθιση δε χρειάζεται να σαι Γάλλος, Ιρανός ή Σκανδιναβός για να ξέρεις. Για το ελληνικό που δεν το ήξερε ούτε η μάνα του τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες (άντε καναν Αγγελόπουλο κι αυτός μας έχει αφήσει χρόνους) μόνο οι ντόπιοι ξέρουν τι παίζει.

I always wonder how these awards distinguish between "lead actor" and "supporting actor". In this movie, I think all 3 women are main characters, and even the director considers them as 3 main characters. Yes I get it that Olivia is playing the Queen and should be considered main character, but in terms of amount of scenes/importance of the characters in the movie, it's really not fair that only 1 actor is considered lead.

It seems that the problem with these interviews is that the movie was filmed so long ago that everyone on stage has completely forgotten the process. Their care factor is zero. They’ve obviously moved on to other projects and have their heads in other responsibilities.

Этот сезон, который очень напоминает фаворит, он все-таки относится к бы из-за этого этот сезон огромную память в моей жизни, Оливия колман сыграла женщина, которая правительница. Правительница елизабет, по-моему, она её играла Елизавета, Елизавета, я не могу вспомнить, настолько было так всё изложено, вся эта история конная кавалерия. Была на высоте на лошади небо чистое, там летели самолёты, так было красиво, это было какое-то празднество, потому что вряд ли что-то связано всё было таком, так хорошо всё описано вся этот фильм. Настолько он интересный, она правда была там фаворитом в своём моменте, она так же описана, как выглядела. Какой-то парик на не был такой кудрями, это раньше такие парики в те времена носили. Подчинённые высшей степени подчинё она была в высшей степени именно, скорее всего, даже я с ней вышибаюсь или Елизавета, или елизабет кто-то из них я могу ошибаться, потому что фильм исторический. Это историческое кино, оно намного такой, вот именно, как будто пронзила моё сердце глубоко пронзила, это это фильм, пронзила моё сердце очень глубоко о это историческое кино, это связано с историей. Это. Это какой-то вот история той жизни, которая была и на то время, когда существовали другие совершенно моменты в жизни. Оливия, она сыграла так хорошо эту роль чувствуется, что она была подготовлена к этой роли высоко подготовлена. Это просто историческое кино. Она связана с её уже вступлением новые права, когда-то мы её завонали, как просто как. Камилу, а теперь она вступила в новые права, и она стала. В высшей степени. Фаворитдкой стала. Это. Это как? Какое-то военное кино. Как будто она выигрывает войну? Так что много конок кавалерии. С мячами с. Какой тут у меня происходят события? И Оливия она смогла эту роль передать ей замечательное такое кино, но историческое, но такое. И постоянно даже показывали, как она именно карете. На лошадях карете, куда ты ехала, она была одета очень красиво. У неё было сиреневое платье, даже было именно. Была где-то на голове у неё. Такая вот у меня шляпка, и куда-то она ехала. Я сейчас попытаюсь объяснить примерно, как я чувствую это кино. Она немножко и историческое, и немного оно драматическое.

Именно история уходит ещё и другими корнями, я эта история сильно-сильно углубляюсь сейчас в эту историю, потому что это кино немного драматическая, потому что происходила драма и она. И просто она ехала именно, где бывший колледж. Поехала туда именно сама. Очень трудно запомнить нализабет, играла, если я не ошибаюсь, потому что именно её история корнямиь, это кино. Вот именно я в начале думала, что это кино просто связано с какими-то именно теми моментами, которые относятся к. Управлению королевы нет-это другое кино, это совершенно другое кино. И здесь, конечно, вот это вот выше колледж, здесь произошла беда, серьёзная беда, здесь произошло. То ли убийство ли кто-то покончил с собой? И мы видим там, принцесса Маргарет. Та самая, которую мы так хорошо знаем. Бони картер, которая играла в принцессу март, и там беда, там всё расстроены, все видно, очень большая беда произошла. Потому что бассейн показывали, и кто-то утонул там. Ну вот и беда очень большая, но она была настолько эта женщина связана с историей. Вот этого вот кино не просто она фаворитом была, она была именно. Как бы военной кавалерии она руководила? И эта женщина, и она что-то связано с мячами, что-то такое, вот именно может быть, это даже какой-то. Шествие какое-то было, может быть, какая-то была именно этот отрывок можно расписывать и расписывать по полной программе. Скорее всего, что-то военное, потому что. Эйвориткой называли, она была главной, везде, везде была главная. Яна. Настолько главное, что она возглавляла вот эту военную кавалерию. Можно так и. И разъяснить план кино, вот именно, именно таким способом.

Seen all Lanthimos movies. This is a different one. It is the most straightforward on all areas, and I do not know if that is a good thing. I could blame the change of the screenwriter because the movie has a different one on The Favourite, but then you see the interviews and there too things make more "sense", and that was not a reason why I was following and enjoying his movies. Didnt felt as satisfied as I was watching aaaall the previous ones.

Yes 100%. I think "power" is his favourite subject to explore in his films, the Lobster and Killing of a Sacred Deer were also both about power dynamics in their own way.

Да, я поняла, скорее всего, что вряд ли это немножко другое. Прости, я могла ошибаться в именах там, да именно, вот именно военное время показывали кавалерия, это с этого начиналось. Какая-то военная войны, что это связано, я сильно углубляться, сильно углубляться в это кино очень оно. Чтобы каждого понять, допустим. К каждому относится так. Фаворит в том деловорит в этом кино сейчас, да это кино, оно рассчитано на тех людей, которые вот как я любит это историческое такое кино, которое. Понимать надо это кино и понимать, что там за делегация, что такое законная кавалерия? Она была немножко именно Сары, мы теперь я знаю, она была немного строга. Она вела это всё действие. Пыталась защитить страну. От нападений. Может быть, в этом кино и заключается пыта страну от нападений со всех сторон может быть и с разных моментов с разных углов нападения были. На Америку, на страну, и она пыталась защитить это всё, она пыталась эту Валерию в нужное русло направить, чтобы. Чтобы те войска отступили. Ну скажи, что-то связано с войной, потому что именно так можно описать это кино, я его таким представляю именно связанное с нападениями. Других военных людей, и она пыталась остановить всё это, она пыталась, это всё именно свои войско пыталась своим войском остановить эту войну. И чтобы именно победу держать над теми людьми. Мне кажется об этом кино-это моё мнение, я не знаю на самом деле, как это. Я думаю, что именно кино в этом заключается. Говорит то, что она меня фаворитом была, она была главной женщиной. Правила этим всем войскам.

Olivia...oh she's a true English/Indian yes!! eccentric! She acts with her whole self I feel. She has been brilliant in everything she's done. Look out for Tyrannosaur....It's amazing but harrowing I think you call it triggering in America.

There were several very silly historical inaccuracies - e.g. Sarah used the word "OK" which was not used for the first time until the middle of the 19th century in America : there was frequent reference to "Prime Minister" when that title was not heard of at that time, indeed not until Robert Walpole some 20 odd years later (he is regarded as Britain's first PM, though even he was not so entitled when he took over as First Lord of the Treasury and Parliamentary leader in 1720, 9 years after the latest time of this film). That said it was hugely enjoyable, just rather typically historically unreliable.

Yorgos already said that he deliberately added contemporary elements. Films are meant to be emotional first not historically accurate.

The movie is overrated bullshit. Clearly ran out of ideas for the ending and just decided to do a long, weird psychedelic shot of rabbits. If there was some kind of visual metaphor in this ending then I'm afraid it was lost on me and the people I went to see the film with. We left the cinema angry, confused and wishing we'd seen the Laurel and Hardy film instead.
