The FBI vs. Martin Luther King: Inside J. Edgar Hoover's "Suicide Letter" to Civil Rights Leader

democracynow.org - It was 50 years ago today that FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover made headlines by calling Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. the “most notorious liar in the country." Hoover made the comment in front of a group of female journalists ahead of King's trip to Oslo where he received the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize, becoming the youngest recipient of the prize. While Hoover was trying to publicly discredit King, the agency also sent King an anonymous letter threatening to expose the civil rights leader's extramarital affairs. The unsigned, typed letter was written in the voice of a disillusioned civil rights activist, but it is believed to have been written by one of Hoover’s deputies, William Sullivan. The letter concluded by saying, "King, there is only one thing left for you to do. You know what it is. … You are done. There is but one way out for you. You better take it before your filthy, abnormal fraudulent self is bared to the nation." The existence of the so-called "suicide letter" has been known for years, but only last week did the public see the unredacted version. We speak to Yale University professor Beverly Gage, who uncovered the unredacted letter.

How would you feel if that message of harmony between different races was partially motivated by his sexual preference for Whites? I'm not saying these FBI tapes are necessarily true, but they allege that King was a color-struck swirler (pardon my English) who was just as turned-off by dark skinned Black women as some of the Black celebs who have come under fire in recent years. However, I believe those who were supposedly exposing him for this were doing it for an assortment of other reasons. Including their own hatred for Blacks and fear of their influence.

"Equality" is a DELUSION, A BIG LIE (2 Thessalonians 2:11 KJV), so that those at the bottom of this society see no need to, or feel guilty (reverse psychology) about ever wanting their rightful turn rule the earth. Equality is one of many delusions mentioned in the Bible of which the Father sent through the (devils/deceivers) of Europe because his actual people, so called Black (taken from West Africa) and Indigenous (of the Americas) descendants of the slave trade and scattered abroad and European conquest refuse to return to him. There will always be rulers and there will always be servants (Isaiah 60:14 KJV, Revelation 13:10 KJV). Sadly and hard for many to accept, MLK was not a follower of the true Heavenly Father but of men (Ghandi, an East Indian man to be exact). We were never supposed to assimilate (Revelation 18:4 KJV).

May Allah accept Dr. Martin Luther King’s many sacrifices for the causes of racial harmony in a still-divided world. Although I would never call the good Dr. MLK “a prophet,” he was a good person with great inner powers given to him by God Almighty. His influential readings in other great people such as The Mahatma Gandhi (who did love and read our Final Prophet), and Henry David Thoreau, (well-read in many eastern and western works, enlightened)-also caused Dr. Martin Luther King to broaden his thinking horizons, while helping resolve the superficial problems of hatred for the Other in his society. May Allah equally bless Ms. Rosa Parks and other civil people who resisted the mobs of inequity.

Prof. Gage, like so many writers on the subject of MLK and wiretaps, refers to an alleged order by RFK authorizing the wiretap of MLK. Books refer to the date of this alleged order as October 10, 1963. Yet, none of these books provide a citation for such an order. If such an order with RFK's signature exists, then why hasn't it been produced under FOIA and been made publicly available? I'm not saying the order doesn't exist, but I don't think any genuine historian or legitimate news writer should be referring to it as fact unless the order is proven to be fact with the publication of the alleged order. Until then, all of them should be calling it the "alleged order" and noting that they've not seen a copy of the order either.

Unfortunately, RFK did authorize the wiretaps because Hoover blackmailed him on JFK. You should read that back story: Bobby Baker>Ellen Rometsch>JFK.
@jamesfeldman4234

Michael Barnhart If RFK did, in fact, issue such an order, then PRODUCE the order. Again, without the actual verified copy of the order, the claim still ranks as an allegation, not fact. Just because several people say something is true doesn't make it true. But the facts to date do not support the existence of such an order. Referring me to more secondary sources, WITHOUT citation, proves nothing.

This is a narrative that will give you some insight: www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2002/07/the-fbi-and-martin-luther-king/302537/ However I am not denegrating RFK here. RFK brushed off Hoover's wiretapping demands for nearly a year to do it (because he was the head of the Justice Dept. and Hoover worked for him, of course.) However, a scandal erupted involving the top Senate Majority aide Bobby Baker that would scandalize JFK if brought to light in Senate hearings at that time. Hoover squashed the info he had on JFK's involvement there and got the wire tap as leverage for helping out RFK to protect his brother. Blackmail, as I said. As far a the actual documents, I am sure Daniel Ellsberg would have gotten them eventually if he was not so preoccupied with blowing the lid off the Pentagon involving Vietnam.
@jamesfeldman4234
@jamesfeldman4234 7 жыл бұрын
Michael Barnhart I read the article and it's still just an allegation. The Kennedys have been among the most researched families in modern history. So, let's say, arguendo, that such an order was actually made. I'm certain that one researcher or another has attempted to obtain proof of the order's existence under FOIA (Freedom of Information Act). FOIA would have then either: (1) produced a photocopy of the order; (2) explained that no such order could be found; (3) explained that no information could be disclosed because of national security or other reasons; or (4) explained that the document had been destroyed. Making such a request through FOIA is the only way to definitively prove if the order existed. (Another, but less reliable way, would be through a credible witness that actually observed the physical order.) But no researcher has documented the claim through a FOIA request. At a minimum, in a well documented book, there would be a footnote indicating that a FOIA request was made and the response would be summarized in that footnote. Anything else is sheer speculation. Citing other secondary sources doesn't cut it. That's why PRIMARY sources are considered to be the most reliable evidence. So, where's a copy of the order or who saw the order? Until researchers can explain that, they should be calling the claim an allegation, because that's what unsubstantiated and unverifiable claims are. I'm also not saying that such an order from RFK did not exist. I don't know one way or the other. But this I can tell you. Nobody has provided convincing proof by producing a copy of the order or otherwise documenting its existence. And that is a fact. Finally, the FBI could hardly be considered to be friendly to the Kennedys. Just the opposite. So, if such an order signed by RFK existed, common sense tells me that the FBI would love to pin the blame on RFK to put the FBI in a more favorable light in history; and, consequently, they would have voluntarily published that order. But they haven't. Nobody has. And nobody has even offered an explanation as to why it hasn't been produced. Under these circumstances, intellectually honest researchers and reporters should always be using the word "alleged" in connection with the oft repeated--but unverified and unsubstantiated--claim.

So if King was actually having affairs (which I don't believe) why didn't this letter and tape ruffle him? If he was actually guilty he would have manifested this in some way publicly, but I see no evidence of this.
