Today I drive one of Italy's rarest and most alluring cars.. I first saw it in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill and have been obsessed with it ever since. It was built to take on Carrol Shelby's Cobra and has an intimidating reputation as a bit of a beast to drive.

Thank you everyone for your kind comments about my Mangusta. And thank you to Jack too. We had a good day together and l think Jack was very pleasantly surprised! I have owned it for nearly 40 years. Apart from being lucky to own several Ferrari V12s l also owned a Miura for over 20 years. But guess which car l have kept as being so very special! It is like a favourite overcoat and l hope never to part with it.

Thank you for being so kind to lend Jack your car, I knew straight away it was yours having read many articles featuring it in classic car mags. You may know but was there a collector on the Fylde coast in Lancashire who had a Mangusta, I only ask as that's the area I'm from and I remember seeing one at a local Italian car specialist where he sent it for it's annual service and check over. I seem to remember being it white but not sure, the owner also had a Bora and a Stratos Stradale along with several other 60s/70s Italian exotica. Lovely car and thanks again

The Mangusta was a much more rare and *higher MSRP* offering. The Pantera was "built to a price", for Lincoln-Mercury dealerships, and that's why the original steering wheel and instrument cluster was SO CHEESY... so much so that even the purists have upgraded them.

Fantastic review, I can't believe you found a Mangusta to review, and a well-sorted one at that. There's a good book on the Shelby-DeTomaso feud - The Road to Modena, by Peter Brock. There's also a good book on the Mangusta's design - Bella Mangusta, by Dick Ruzzin - written by the owner of the one Mangusta that DeTomaso built with a 427 Chevrolet engine for GM Vice President Bill Mitchell. Both are great reads!

It's not a Cleveland. It's a 302 windsor based motor. Totally different animal from the Pantera engine. Classic 260/289/302 short deck Ford small block instead of the Cleveland. If they stroked it, it's likely a 347 cid setup now. Real common for hot rodders here in the colonies!

I seem to remember a Mangusta being used in a Disney Kurt Russell film from the late 60's. Might have been "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes," or similar. Joe Flynn was hilarious as always. What a car! DeTomaso CLub used to turn up at Italian car events in California, and we were spoiled seeing these cars int he 80s when they were within reach. Those engines can be easily tuned to 400HP and not expensively either. If you can find a genuine 427 engine, that would be the one for this car. Jolly good commentary. Thank you

That thing is just BRUTAL! It's just about my favourite supercar styling exercise. Even better than the Lotus Esprit that Giugiaro styled after this. But the styling language is unmistakably Giugiaro. When I was younger I preferred the Pantera, but that looks a little too 'over the top' for me now. The Mangusta is just sublime. Even the name is killer (pun intended)! Would love one of these (I'll buy one in my dreams). Can't believe how TINY it is though!

My neighbour (outside of Toronto) bought a Pantera and took me for a drive (this is about 45 years ago). Very cool. Then, he added a Mangusta to his 1-car collection. I am pretty sure it had the 289 ci, so I guess a really rare one. I had forgotten about those amazing butterfly doors that cover the engine. The lights, the lower stance (at least it seemed that way) and, I think, the smaller engine, made it seem a lot more European to me than the Pantera. Both had those fat back tires... nice to see that your friend hasn't tried to modernize his with big wheels and low profile tires. If you love the Mangusta, I don't think you'll be happy with a Pantera. That image of the backbone chassis was great, thanks for including it. JT

Nice job! A few niggles-the Mangusta actually doesn’t share the Pantera/Ferrari steering rack. It lifted it from the most lowly place imaginable-the Renault R4! Shifter is by steel rods and U-joints, not cables. Although the driving position can feel comfortable, the most unusual thing about the Mangusta is the proximity to the top of the windscreen. It is SO close to your face. One good sneeze and you will smack it good!

Fell in love with the car when I first saw a picture of one in 1968. Frustratingly a very rare RHD car came up for sale about 5 years ago which I just missed and in my favourite colour. It wasn’t cheap at £100k but as Jack said they are north of £300k now. Thanks for the review.

The fact that this car can sit regular people in the car is a plus. Also it sounds and looks great. Suspension and other small mechanical things could easily mitigated! Like you said, a lovely car to drive.

Steering? What's that? Brakes? So what. Hard shifter? Pffft. Park that beauty and just STARE at it. I got to pour over one in 1979 when a local dealer had one in Camarillo CA USA. I about flew off the highway when I drove past it, it was just too beautiful for words in its mist green metallic. I'll forever be in love with it.

I love love love these rare and gorgeous vintage supercars, but how about now and then a rare but somewhat affordable classic? May I suggest the Lancia Montecarlo/Scorpion? There is very little about them on KZfaq, but it's a really quirky little mini-exotic.

There is some American style in this car without doubt and nothing wrong with that. It does have a great stance overall. You had your sensible hat on today which is good when you think of the value of the car. You still managed to get it to 'sing' though Jack, very nice! Ah so it is KZfaq who put up the thumbnails at the end. There have been a few recently that have covered up your contact details, not complaining Jack, just thought I would mention it. Please keep up the good work thanks Jack. 👍👍
