I've enjoyed this video more then most I've watched. In this video I've noticed a lot more detail and more understanding of the sidekick. I can see a lot of difference and the approach from close/mid range sidekick, Kicking from a distance and low sheen/knee sidekicks. I can also see the 'burst' approach that gives that extra power. And most importantly keeping the body more central then leaning back and pointing 45" direction when using a mid range or low sidekick. Thank you Sifu Ishii.

The Legend of Karate Hirokazu Kanazawa's granddaughter, Hiyori Sensei, the daughter of Nobuaki Kanazawa. Hirokazu Kanazawa left a tremendous mark on the world of Karate, and our respect for him and his family is boundless. Oss
This was a great demonstration explanation of the intercepting side kick. Ishii Sensei’s execution and explosiveness is very evident. Hiyori picked up the kick pretty quickly and she clearly has a mind for body mechanics as she was asking the right questions. Great video and the spirit of humility and learning was wonderful.

Maybe because almost every martial art performs this kick. That´s like Anderson Silva, when fighting Viltor Belfort, people saying that kick was learned from Steven Seagal, but that is a common kick, present in a lot of martial arts. in Taekwondo, this is "Yop tchagui".

@@gpmdf__348 But Ishii sensei performs it differently from Shotokan karate
@gpmdf__3485 ай бұрын
@@fredatlas4396. Hi, I am yellow belt on Shotokan Karate, red belt with black degree on Taekwondo (almost black belt). I can say that the core of this kick is the same, with some different minimal details from one art to another. As instance, on Taekwondo it's more fluid, while Karate is a little more "hardened". Whats I mean is that these kicks are not principles of one specific martial art, but are common on all of them, with minimal differences. The various Karate styles themselves, have the same essence, but with differences that were put there by different families that used to practice, resulting in different styles, but same martial art, same core, same principles. Bruce Lee kicks are like Taekwondo kicks, with some little diferences on style, but one can not say that they are totally different technics. People use to say these technics are totally different, but they are not. And lots of technics are totally fake, but are shown as they would be pretty useful on a fight. You have to be a very conscious person to understand what is real and what is not.
@gpmdf__3483 ай бұрын
@las4396 This kick is very common in a lot of martial arts. Bruce Lee performed it several times on his movies. We can see it on Tae-kwon-do, Muay Thai or even Anderson Silva, performing it in the middle of a fight (usually as a low kick). It's a pretty simple kick. In Tae-kwon-do, here in my country, you start training it from the white belt.
@realsocratease3 ай бұрын
Yeah absolutely, looks basically identical to a hopping side kick. I was curious if he was going to teach/perform a back leg side kick which is much more difficult to make fluid because of the level of body twisting involved to get the foot and the leg into the right position to throw it.@@gpmdf__348

Ahoj mistři! Musím uznat, že kop do boku (v Goju ryu = yoko geri) je velice pěkný, rychlý a účinný... Bravo! To je skutečně silná zbraň u kopů! Dáma mistrně v karate se to naučila kopat pěkně rychle - pokud to nezkoušela již předtím... 😉 Hello masters! I must admit that the kick to the side (in Goju ryu = yoko geri) is very nice, fast and effective... Bravo! That's a really powerful kicking weapon! The lady master of karate learned to kick it pretty quickly - if she hasn't tried it before... My big appreciation! 😉
At first, her kicks were still two steps, like a karate kick. But soon she found the fluidity. Very talented and a world champion karateka indeed.

Always fascinating to see breakdowns of how to perform a motion that at the first glance looks very simple and easy to execute, but in reality is a lot more complicated when looking deeper into it. Quite a few segments in rapid succession where small details matter a lot in order to maximize it's potential. Gotta hand it to both Sensei and Student here, even a student of her caliber being so humble and not letting her very real and accomplished skills in karate dictate her approach to learning. She has a genuine interest to nail every detail there is in order to do it as best as she can possible do it, such a great great mindset!

Although I studied Taekwondo the most, I did read the Tao of Jeet Kune Do. At least in my dojang, our teacher was focused more on power than Olympic sparring like modern Taekwondo. He also taught us to use our heal with our side kick. Anyhow, it was cool to see Hiyori adjust to the style difference.

Ishii’s kicks are brilliant! I’ve done Karate for many decades and decided many many years ago that a side kick with the heel is much more effective than the blade edge. However, for kicking the knee or leg, I think the blade edge gives you more of a chance to make contact as the leg and knee are so mobile.
@jkdfighter496411 ай бұрын
blade is weaker, but gives you slightly more range. however, the benefits from the heel is much more powerful. Ishii's sidekick is strong but i think mine is better. He tends to push too much.
@horizonblack10 ай бұрын
@@jkdfighter4964 The kicks he is demonstrating control range. The high kick will shove, yes. The low kick is a stopping kick. If your aim is self defense, controlling range is paramount. You are correct that delivery with the heel strikes with more power, but the blade strikes hard enough for most purposes.

Thank you for this video, it is the first I have watched from your channel. I was familiar with Bruce Lee's low kick for street defense, but I have never seen the side kick demonstrated before. It is really cool to see something that has it's origin in Taekwon-do being executed so well in another art with such good understanding of the mechanics of the kick. I personally like how he highlights the slight alterations to the TKD version in regards to shoulder position which make additional engagement with hands easier. In TKD with this kick you aim is to strike with the kick and then move back out again. For people who do traditional TKD and not the sport, it is so refreshing to see content like this. Most significant variation would be the position of the leg when getting ready to kick. TKD brings the foot up closer to the knee of the back leg. The Value of this is that as you kick out and your back foot twists, you engage more power as your leg kicks out (much like twisting a punch, but with your leg and body).

JKD originated from Wing Chun which was refined by actual application (i.e. street fights). The idea for power generation shown here is a perfect example of advanced WC not many of the so called Sifu on KZfaq knows. I have only seen it with SiBak Duncan Leung (and his students) and personally from Sifu Alan Lee.

This makes me think of how many or most of Bruce's students had some kind of martial arts or fighting background, and how, if what you had worked, he didn't try to change you so much as give you the tools and understanding to make you better. Joe Lewis said that after training with Bruce, he felt like he couldn't lose; and at least one former kempo student-might've been Steve Golden-said that when he went back and sparred with his old classmates, he was amazed at how easily he could handle them. JKD was/is a collection of principles that Lee found were shared by all martial arts-the science that makes any system or technique work-and the art is using that science to make whatever you do as direct, efficient, and effective as it can be. In other words: This lady's gonna be whoopin' some ASS, lol.

I learned that kick from wing chun basically. But the son of my sifu taught me some things like this "Bruce Lee's kick". It's also similar in the last steps to the muay Thai "flying kick" too
