This is the next in my series of video short histories of famous gear. "The Fender Deluxe Amplifier, or From Woodie to Silverface and everything in between." As you might have guessed from the channel name I'm particularly interested in smaller amps or pedals but also pieces that have such a long legacy that they are sort of "do it all" items. In that spirit a Deluxe Reverb is a "big amp" in my world. I can't imagine needing more average wattage and headroom than this amp can provide if you're in a mic'd and proper PA setting... but as the saying goes, "You're mileage may vary."
I'd like to specifically thank three custom amp builders for providing me with great info when pulling this together.
Carl Carassco at Carl's Custom Amps. His knowledge of all things "tweed" has been an invaluable resource when pulling these vids together.
carlscustomamps...
David Allen at Allen Amplification. I've leaned on David for his knowledge and excellent parts for about a dozen years now. His knowledge of brownface circuits in particular was a tremendous help here.
www.allenamps.com/
And Dan Lurie of FYD Amps. Dan has been the source of nearly everything I might know about the inside of an amplifier. He has either built or shepherded me through builds of almost every amp here in my small studio set up (and it weighs on his mind that I still own an amp made by another company. :)
www.fydamps.com/
I'd like to be clear that I was sponsored in know way by any of these fine gentlemen or their companies. Well, unless kindness to the less informed can be considered sponsorship that is.
Thanks for watching the video and thanks ... for being a part of the
five watt world.
Keith

It is great. The one that hooked me. I upgraded it with improved capacitors and it is basically impossible to beat. One thing you can do without a soldering iron or life-threatening risk is put a C12R Jensen in it. That is the best speaker for it and the one that was in the original. The modern Italian one is just as good as if not better than the original and I have tested them toe to toe to know.

A suggestion for your collection of suggestions: The relationship of Fender amps and JBL speakers. Why did Fender apply the orange JBL logo on some models and some not? The sonic characteristics of different JBL speakers. Etc. OR The different speakers used Fender used throughout the years. Maybe Rick Beato and you could tackle this in an episode together.

It took years, but I have finally arrived at the point where new gear doesn't turn my head very much these days (the new Tonemaster Deluxe is a notable exception) and I am down to these things electric-wise: - a 1973 Fender Silverface Vibro Champ with a Weber Sig 8 in it (otherwise all original except 3 prong plug) - a Fender Princeton Reverb RI, stock - a 2004 Fender American Deluxe 50th Anniversary Commemorative Stratocaster (gold hardware and tweed embroidered case), stock - a 2004 Fender American Series 50th Anniversary Commemorative Stratocaster (50's pickups and tweed embroidered case), stock - a 2003 Fender American Series Ash Telecaster, stock Plus a bunch of pedals I use less and less as time passes.

In my younger years back in the 60's I wrote to J.B.Lansing for design criteria needed to build a speaker cabinet with 2 twelve inch JB speakers. In that literature it stated that it takes 10 times the music power to equal the effect of adding multiple speakers and that no dimension of the cabinet should exceed a 4 to 1 ratio. Pad each opposite inside wall with acoustic insulation with 2 x 9 inch open ports below each speaker. The cabinet was outstanding and am sorry I sold it long ago.

One of the oddest things about the tweed-era Deluxes to us “modern” folk is the interactivity of the Instrument & Microphone channels. Turning up the volume of one channel reduces the midrange response of the other. The original idea was you’d use a Deluxe for amplifying your guitar and your voice at the same time. Kind of a mini PA. Turning up the Mic channel to the 8-9 range scoops some mids from the Inst channel, adding a little more headroom. Keeping the Inst channel at 3-5 or so emphasizes mids in the Mic channel, letting vocals cut through better.

Very informative video! Fender amps are legendary. I have owned several. If I had to pick just one, my choice would be the almighty Twin Reverb. If I could choose two Fender amps, my other choice would be the Bassman. I think everyone deserves at least one Fender amplifier during their lifetime. I guess you can tell that I have a big bias for Fender. I love Marshall amps too. My favorite thing to do is to play a Fender and a Marshall together in stereo. The sound of that mixture is nothing short of magical.

Own an all original ‘76 that was my father’s main amp and used to record the pedal steel on Steely Dan’s “FM”at Criteria Studios in Miami. I think that’s a testament to its incredible tone in itself. Also have a Paul Rivera hand wired ‘83 Deluxe that’s amazing. Both are great but slightly different, to my ears at least the ‘76 has more crystal clear mid punch and the ‘83 has more gritty spank. The only amp I have that is even close is a ‘93 Fender Concert and I’ll put it up against any modern amp made. It’s extremely heavy for a 60wt combo, as heavy as a 100wt Twin, but the tone is worth it, if the room will accommodate the volume. Otherwise, I don’t think you can beat either of the two Deluxe Reverb amps I own, one a silverface and the other a blackface. I have a ‘77 Marshal JCM, Soldano 100wt combo from the mid 90’s that was an artist endorsement of my Dad’s and have had the best offerings from Mesa Boogie, Engle, Dr Z and more and still don’t think any come close. Rick Gesner from Valvetrain amps went through the schematics of the Deluxe’s and the Concert to make improvements to his flagship amp, unfortunately he was only able to make a pedal he uses in front of that amp for demonstrations that could come close.

For anybody who has a silver face Deluxe Reverb, in my experience typically they're only seven or eight parts different from a blackface amp*. If you want to try a simple change that might make a lot of difference in tone and headroom, there's a coupling cap in the silverface amps I have seen, just ahead of the phase inverter if I remember correctly, that is 10 times the microfarad value of the same cap position in a black face Deluxe Reverb. Change it back to the black face value part. This will get the bass balance of the amp back in control; you won't have pants- flapping (literally!) bass output any longer, but you probably won't blow any more speakers either. I still got plenty of bottom out of the amp afterwards, even with a MIM Richard Burton Tele.....and of course, it's easy to put it back to the stock silverface cap value if you decide you want that extra bottom end. I don't know how you get away with that unless you're running the amplifier into a 2 x 12 or 4 x 10 cab or something like that. *cleaning up the wiring and lay out, especially if the amp oscillates when the snubber caps are removed, is a whole 'nother story on some of these!

Thanks for the info. I had owned a HRD and a couple Deluxe reissues. I made, from a You Tube tutorial, some upgrade mods, about $15-$20 spent in replacing some caps, like a silver mica for the highs and resisters plus an old vintage speaker which it improved the sound a lot. The music store owner and tech guy was amazed at the new tone. I wish Fender would re-think spending a few dollars more on cost for critical parts as not to compromise their original sound. I ended up doing a total redo hand wire job on one Deluxe with all quality American components except for the Russian tubes to get close to the real Deluxe tone and a robust made amp that can hold up.

Great again !!! A bigger amp but Ronnie Montrose said 'Montrose' was recorded on a 'lowly Brown face Bandmaster', then a 2 speaker amp he bought at a yard sale in the Mill Valley area for like $75.00. Sounded best full up which would blow the speakers. He had a set of spares and if one set fried during recording, they'd go in for a recone (shop in Daly City) and the spares would get loaded. ha, he even went to so far as to mark the frames to make sure the speakers were his. yeah, i guess happened more than once. Great album.

Love the Deluxe and Deluxe Reverb amps from all eras. I have a tweed and a black face, which have become my go-to's for all my gigs. I've owned a lot of amps in my life (and still have more than I should) but these are all anyone needs in any reasonable situation. Your comments on the brown face are spot on. These amps are spectacular and not well known by many guitar players. They do not sag as much as the tweeds, yet have a nice breakup earlier than black face amps. At 15 watts and lighter than the black face Deluxe's, they're very desirable - if you can find one, that is.

I have a 90s DRRI and it has miles and miles of sweet Fender tone and takes pedals like a champ. The key is to either bypass or replace that horrid bright cap they put on the reverb channel.

As always, an excellent video. Please do the short history of the Fender Vibro-King. I personally own the rarest ones ever made. It’s a 2003 custom Fender Vibro-king in the color of “ sunshine “. Only nine of them were made. For the right amount, I’ll sell it.

Deluxe-style amps are the Goldilocks of amps, in my opinion. Just the right amount of wattage for playing with a band focused into a 1x12" cabinet. Nothing extra, nothing lacking.

Thanks Keith! Knowing nothing previously from your wise knowledge, I purchased a Silverface Deluxe reissue in 2015. Love it, but it is LOUD!. Princeton might have been the better pick for home playing. I still have a 1973 100W Twin Reverb , thank God it has a master volume.

I always wondered why a guy in a local band more bad news only brought a deluxe reverb to gig with and 6 or 7 pedals. Even to larger and outside venues. Meanwhile I'm toting a Hi-watt 100 4x12 Marshall cab and a Soldano or JCM 800. Now I've reached my late 40s I know. 😊👍🎶🎸

It seems that the 22 watt Deluxe Reverb amps tone is perfect at higher stage volumes (8-dime) and breaks up very musically while still being loud enough for most situations. Hard to beat imho.

Very informative video, Keith. It really puts it in perspective. The only thing I might add is I often read about the differences in current, i.e., 110-115 versus the 120+ we have today, and how it affects the design and components of the amps over the years. Thanks!

For anyone watching this a year later - The Deluxe Reverb stayed pretty much the same all the way up to 1982. If you know how to open an amp up and solder, you can clean up the lead dress, do some basic maintenance and have a killer amp for a steal of a price.

I've got a Fender Deluxe 90 DSP amp from 2005. A friend of mine from a Big Band (!) we both used to play in worked for Fender at the time, and he showed up to a reunion gig with one of these amps. I liked the sound of it and asked him if he could get me one straight from the factory. He said he could, and a few months later this rather heavy box showed up on my doorstep. The weight was mostly from the transformers in this beast! But since I have 10 electric guitars, there's a wide range of sounds I can get from this one amp (not to mention the whole RAFT of sounds I can also get from those guitars and a VOX Valvestate Amp - it has a tube preamp and a solid state power amp!). Anyway, the Deluxe 90 absolutely sounds like a Fender and has the power to blow the windows out of your house... if that's your idea of a good time. If it is, boy, can you have fun with this sucker!!!

I have a nice '60 Brownface Concert-Amp. I love brownies and I know their tones. But the best amp I have ever played is a '68 Silverface Tremoluxe. The Tremoluxe is a variant of the Silverface Deluxe Reverb with a trem circuit. That Tremoluxe kills and I would buy it in a heartbeat. I have told it's owner to NEVER sell the amp. He will never get another that nice looking and sounding. Amps that good get sucked up by collectors and they rarely come to the open market.

This is a very late reply. Always favored the Brownies as well. Using a pair of Brown Concerts with a '54 Gold Top is tone heaven for gigging (in the right room). My all time fav was an early 60s Pro. Crank that and you were there. Lost to the sins of time. Now use a mint '64 Deluxe that just fell into my lap. All I need. Perfect warm clean tones, takes great to pedals (as do most Fenders).
