Some authors write, hurry through the story seeming desperate to get to the end. Others authors…they create an environment within which one can get lost; almost hearing the described sounds (of a branch breaking or gravel crunching). Kate White does exactly that! This is the difference, for me, between a simple summer read and a story that pulls me in. And the narrator…her breathy voice, contemplative and excited voice inflections further tie me to the story. Very enjoyable.

These suburban domestic thrillers are so unserious. The main issue is their narrators: they completely lack self-awareness and it makes them very unrelatable/unlikeable. The readers* arent helping. Like at all.

I hope, these books are still available. 🤞🏾 Agatha Christie: - The Mystery of The Blue Train - Death on the Nile - Sparkling Cyanide Historical Murder Mysteries: - Murder at the FitzWilliam, Jim Eldridge - Maisie Dobbs, Jacqueline Winspear Contempory mysteries/Domestic thrillers (far from perfect but entertaining for sure): - The Guest List, Lucy Foley - The Silent Patient, Alex Michaelides Those ones are excellent: - The Flight, Julie Clark - Razorblade, S. A. Cosby Action/Adventures - The Gray Man, Mark Greaney - Lockdown, Sean Black - The Hornet Flight, Ken Follett - The Informant, Thomas Perry (not book 1 of the series but the best IMO)

What was the last word Summer said ? Was it bonding or baby as I could only hear the B sound .I expected a final twist after the music as sometimes happens on audio book so was bit disappointed it was just music until the end but I did enjoy it
@elenalatici9568 Жыл бұрын
What IS this thing with the music in these books? It's 2:30 in the morning, and I listened to that dinky music waiting for an epilogue.....but nothing. Why the need for music? How about THE END? A good book. I don't wan to create s real spoiler, so I'll just say... The affair was clear in the beginning, but the writer cleverly distracts the reader with the happy announcement of the pregnancy. Soon the reader gets so caught up in the Hannah thread of the story, the affair you thought you knew about fades from mind, so the twist at the end is a real surprise. But the real mystery here is the music. Not even remotely good music. Why?

I do like Kate White's books, but I often feel she misses plot opportunities in her own story that would feel more realistic and exciting. One example, instead of lying about why she went into Hannah's room, Summer should have admitted her suspicions and leaned into what little whiner she can be. That's realistic. Then Gabe could start to believe her and add some intensified suspense. He coould be incredulous but also become suspicious himself. I would have gound that more entertaining. In most of her books I find these lost opportunities and it disapoints me. Kate White has everything going for her, she can afford to take some risks.

@barbaraenglish398310 ай бұрын
I was very annoyed at the narrative; the main female character whispers all through the story. Maybe the narrator is afraid someone night hear her. Just awful. I also hate when there are a ton of characters at the onset of the story so that I cannot keep track of all the characters; OMG, this story is so jamned with characters that I could not get past the first 30 minutes and had to give up and try a different book. Not every story and narrator are pleasing to every listener so I hope this doesn't dissuade other listeners to shy away from diving in and enjoying themselves as many others have done.

I understand! It's really hard to stick with an audiobook that you cannot follow because of the narrator. I am glad to say I did not have the same experience with this book. It was GREAT in every way, both the story and narration. The main character, Summer, does deploy 'thinking out loud' - is that called 'Interior monologue'? The narrator does use a specific tone to separate that inner 'dialog' from conversations with other characters but I wouldn't call it whispering by any means. I could hear every word clearly & I found it was a great way to advance the story-- after all the entire story was from 'Summer's' point of view. I'm already reading/listening to more Kate White.

It's a bit slow to start, and Summer's obsession is annoying. The narrators whispering voice is a bit much for this book. I expected more suspense with that sound. Overall, the book and the narration were good. I, personally, won't seek other titles by this author, but that's just my preference. Oh, and the book cut off at the end. Idk what Summer was going to finish saying or if she was done. It stopped abruptly and started playing music. 🤷♀️ Thanks for the listen, though!

The author should make her women character like summer more confident. If her husband is being moody she acts like she has no life. Scooby Do? A very famous American cartoon. A bunch of groovy teenagers solve crimes, Scooby is a dog who hangs out with the stoner of the group, voiced by Kasey Kasem, named "Shaggy". I think. The end is always the same, a literal mask comes off, the bad guy confesses all, then says " And I would've gotten away with it if it hadn't been for you kids!!" There was a very forgettable, strangely cast live actors version in the late 1990s, maybe the early 2000s. Sarah Michelle Gellar and her husband Freddie Prinze Jr. starred. Some day my photographic memory will do something better, like solve crimes. For now, pop culture. Oh! They had a van. Anyone remember the van, it's colliding with some Beatles memory in my brain.

I am a fan of Kate White’s writer’s ‘voice’ layering accretion of details-but the triteness of the protagonist in this story enmeshed in an affluent trophy life shaken at first by childish jealousy of a ‘contender trophy’…is boring due to lack of substance- though she tries to dramatize- the shallow ‘dowton abbey’ preoccupations just bore me

Someone is using a whole week of their Word of the Day Calendar. Or is that predictive text? There's nothing close to Downton Abbey, which was about the "upstairs" and "downstairs" people and the fact that they must never step out of place. There is one housekeeper in this book, and she's never forced to any servants' quarters. Word salad.
