Major respect to our Ottoman friends then and our Turkish brothers today
@burn18982 жыл бұрын
The Turkish sultan offered £12,000 (£500k today) but the British crown refused to allow it. So he sent several ships full of food, the British tried to sink them but all the ships made it to drogheda. That’s why drogheda has the Islamic crescent moon as their town symbol, to honour the generosity of the Turkish sultan, who literally saved thousands of lives.

I am an Englishman and I look back at the way we treated the Irish people in the 19th century.It is no wonder they wanted their independence from the crown.This song says it all.The British Empire has a lot to answer for!!!

Not just the Irish, to be frank. The vast wealth and enormous breadth of the British Empire was built largely on a centuries old policy of ruthless colonialism and exploitation. Their antics in India and participation in over two hundred years of the Atlantic Slave Trade alone are monstrous crimes against humanity that they still have yet to answer for.

This is the best version I've heard. It's a masterpiece of a song and singer. It was a very sad time in Irish and English history which should not be forgotten. The fault was with the English ruling classes and not the English working classes who had very little themselves. I was born in Wales but I do have Irish blood lines.
@BrutishYetDelightful5 жыл бұрын
I like this version a lot, too. The Dropkick Murphys actually introduced me to the song in the first place, so their version will always be special. There's also an amusing video of some Japanese guys singing it in a restaurant.

You don't have to be from a particular religious background, country or ethnicity to appreciate this song. I spent much of my childhood travelling down from the North to watch Ireland play rugby and love hearing it being belt out by a terrific crowd.

Once when my dad was in thailand he went to a pub with a few friends and they ended up making friends with some Aussie guys. There was about 12 of them, half Aussies and half Irish walking down the street belting this at the top of their lungs. Us Irish and Aussies always seem to band together wherever we go haha. Love you Aussies. Ireland and Australia brothers forever 🇮🇪🇦🇺❤️
