About a hundred young, strong, German officers trained for the war with the Soviet Union could not even think that they would be killed not by an enemy bullet received in a bloody battle, but by a very young Belarusian girl.
In 1942, in German-occupied Belarus, near the village of Obol The Wehrmacht officers' retraining center is located in the Vitebsk region. Gunners, pilots and tankmen from Leningrad, Novgorod, Oryol came here. As it should be, there was a canteen for cadets in the retraining center, neat and cozy in German, as far as the conditions of the war allowed. The German cook cooked for the officers, and the dirty work in the kitchen was done, as usual, by various "subhumans" from the locals in quotation marks. And among them was a smart little girl with pigtails.
None of these important Germans, dashing officers who have passed dozens of battles, hung with crosses and medals, could have imagined that death was waiting for them not on the battlefield, but here, in Oboli, in the image of a smiling Belarusian girl. The girl's name was Zina Portnova.
Zina and her younger sister Galya came to Belarus from Leningrad in June 1941. Their grandmother lived in the village of Zuya near Oboli, and the Portnov sisters were supposed to spend the holidays with her. Zina was in the seventh grade at the time, and Galya had just started school. So the girls ended up in the occupied territory. In 1942, the Portnov sisters became members of the Young Avengers organization. Basically, it included students of the Obol secondary school, who were led by twenty-year-old Efrosinya Zenkova. Very soon Zina earned the trust of her comrades and was included in the steering committee of the organization. And her sister Galya was appointed a liaison.
The activities of the "Young Avengers" were no less vivid and effective than the activities of the Krasnodon organization "Young Guard". It's just that young Belarusians were a little less lucky than their Ukrainian comrades in wrestling, and a writer as talented and famous as Fadeev did not find out about their feat. But this does not mean that young partisans from Belarus fought the enemy less bravely than Ukrainian heroes. Among the most significant diversions of the "Young Avengers" should be attributed to the "treat" that Zina PortnOva organized for the Germans.
Zina got a job in the cadet cafeteria. At first, she was not allowed anywhere near the kitchen stoves where food was being prepared, Zina washed the floors, took out the slops and did other dirty work. Then the dishwasher got sick. Zina, who by that time had already become quite familiar in the kitchen, was allowed to wash the boilers and plates. And then the day came when Zina was able to seize the moment and pour a huge dose of rat poison into a pot of soup. Two days later, almost a hundred Germans were buried at the local cemetery - selected fighters, from among the best officers.
The investigation began as soon as the mass malaise of the Germans was discovered after lunch in the dining room, and the doctor diagnosed "poisoning". The head cook, frightened by the scale of the sabotage, and knowing perfectly well what would happen if his oversight was discovered, swore and swore that he did not allow anyone from the locals to get close to the pots. However, to check, the new dishwasher was told to eat soup. Zina, without batting an eye, scooped up a spoon and swallowed, then again and again. She got home in a daze, struggling with bouts of abdominal pain and nausea. The grandmother rushed to give her granddaughter milk whey and herbal decoctions. This, as well as good health and the fact that she did not eat the whole plate, saved Zina. The girl survived.
Despite the fact that this time there was no direct suspicion of Zina, the Young Avengers squad still decided that she and Gala needed to go to the partisans. So Zina became a fighter of the Voroshilov partisan detachment. She was assigned to intelligence, and Galya was assigned to help in the medical battalion. From August until the late autumn of 1943, Zina Portnova performed the tasks of the command of the detachment, each time returning safely from the most difficult tasks. But closer to winter, several guys from among the "Young Avengers" were shot in Oboli. It was clear that a traitor had appeared in the village. The commander of the partisan detachment instructed Zina to establish contact with those who remained alive. She completed the task, but on her way back, she came across an ambush.
